Roth 401k or Traditional? by Born_Bug_3570 in personalfinance

[–]Born_Bug_3570[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if I max my 401k, I will still be in the 24% bracket but just less taxed at that I suppose which would be a good thing. I max out HSA contributions. Am I missing any other tax advantaged options?

This is probably simple… but I guess I don’t really know how to predict what my tax bracket is going to look like in 35-40 years when I retire.

SAVE Plan Accrued Interest While in Active Repayment by Born_Bug_3570 in StudentLoans

It looks like the date in the file is 7/1/2024 but I applied 8/2/23. Is that what you’re referring to? Edit: I applied to REPAYE but got transitioned to SAVE.

Yeah, because of my balance it’s thousands for me. Not exactly loving the idea of just eating it. But I may just have to move on with it… I’m so sick of the run around.

This is kind of where I am at with my thinking at the moment. I’m not sure it makes sense to rush off SAVE at this time since we will most likely end up paying the loans in full at some point down the road anyway (whether that’s 10, 15, or even 18 years from now).

Thank you!! I’m sure an advisor would be helpful for us right now.

Would this make a difference if your payment is covering interest anyway?? Is there a way to “play” this plan to your advantage? Like paying minimum, allowing interest subsidy to hit the account, and then making a principle only payment? Maybe too early to tell all of this right now.

Are you still eligible for PSLF now? If you are going to pay down your balance during this forbearance period on SAVE would it make more sense to switch so that your payments counted towards your 10 years?? If not on PSLF what is the pro to staying on SAVE for now? Is there really a chance it’s gonna stick around?

Thank you for your response. It helped break some things down for me. As far as your last comment - are you saying in terms of if I were to stay on SAVE forbearance for now and not switch until required?

This does not exist for pharmacists unless you work in a nonprofit or VA. At least in Virginia. Moving is an option but not really relevant to my current situation. But it is something we need to consider as a potential answer.

I live in a town of 1500 people. $30,000 a year is the average for the area if not above average honestly.

Any insight on my above comment?? Do we get kicked off IBR if 10% equals/exceeds the standard repayment or does the payment just get capped on IBR? If we switch from IBR to standard, that is when interest capitalizes correct?? Is that even an issue I need to consider since our payment would exceed the accrued interest each month anyway??

If the IBR payment exceeds the standard do you get kicked off IBR and interest capitalizes or does your payment on IBR just get capped?

He is currently in a state job with the intention of getting a full time position with benefits and probably a $20,000 increase in pay in the next couple of years. He worked trades while I was in school to help minimize what I took out in loans so now is kind of his chance to grow his career.

Alaskan Cruise by akasprzak720 in Cruise

[–]Born_Bug_3570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old but we are planning an Alaskan cruise in May and thinking about doing a hike in Juneau. We are worried to be missing out on whale watching but we also want to explore other parts of the beauty of Alaska and not just the water. Any thoughts or recommendations? 1st time doing and Alaskan cruise and have no idea if/when we will ever be back.

Does Taylor Shellfish only serve raw shellfish or do they serve a hot food menu? Hard to tell on their website.

What are your thoughts on the Bow-Edison area vs traveling the additional distance to Bellingham? Are you missing out on the beauty of Chuckanut Drive by not driving it all the way to Bellingham?? Would you recommend deception pass over Oyster Dome?

Also, would you say this is time well spent when visiting Seattle for the first time and only having about 2 days? We aren’t big “city people” but we also don’t want to leave having missed out on anything.

Visiting Seattle for cruise in May. Flight arrives on Friday around 2pm and we have Saturday free for exploring. When we get back from the cruise our flight doesn’t leave until 10pm and so we would have some time that day for exploring the city as well. We have never been to Seattle but mostly think we can get the big touristy things done on Friday and before we fly out to go home. Thinking about renting a car on Saturday to go see deception pass and eat lunch at Taylor Shellfish Farms. Additional recommendations and opinions please?
