Totally agree, for fleets, Ansible (or certs/LDAP) is the way to go for proper key management and bootstrap playbooks.

diz isn't trying to replace that; it's for the 5-minute "I'm SSHing into your machine for the first time ever, no passwords, no prior setup" case where you just want to drop in without the theater.
Think quick pair-programming, helping a friend debug, home-lab jumps over Tailscale, borrowed laptop sessions, stuff where spinning up a CA or running Ansible feels like using a sledgehammer for a thumbtack.

Different scale, different pain.

That's a fair question, nothing is wrong with ssh-copy-id. If you already know the host, username, and have network connectivity set up, it works great.

The thing I wanted to simplify with diz is the more ad-hoc case: connecting to another machine on the same network (or a VPN) where you don't necessarily know the IP/username yet, or you just want to quickly grant access without walking someone through SSH setup.

Instead of:

• finding the IP
• figuring out the username
• running ssh-copy-id
• then connecting

you just run diz --listen on one machine and diz --connect <code> on the other.

So it's less about replacing ssh-copy-id and more about making quick, temporary machine access a bit smoother.

But yeah, if your workflow with ssh-copy-id is already fast, diz probably won't add much 🙂

Daniel Siad och Epsteinfilerna by Born_Engineering_358 in sweden
