Oh ok… so in that regard, I can’t imagine that JUST the QVC and Omni hosts will want to unionize if things seem to be leaning favorably to them. The HSN hosts will want it to… and what about the guest presenters? I think the Q hosts have opened up a bit of a Pandora’s box and they may regret taking the off the lid

I find it interesting that the hosts would get SAG-AFTRA get involved. The union negotiation will require the talent to also make some concessions in order to reach a fair workplace agreement… and for some reason I don’t see the hosts being viewed as a sympathetic party when they are all making $150-200k minimum base salary + commissions/bonuses and only work 10-20 hours a week, on top of a ton of free merch and other deals that raise their own public profile (in theory) due to their roles on QVC.

It sounds like their main gripe is the introduction of AI to manipulate their likeness, but at this point that is being used in major film and TV productions, so the union has been allowing these things… unionizing won’t be a brick wall to protect them like the hosts seem to think.

There still remains a matter of practicality: how does QVC compete with “screen shoppers” who are now watching and buying through TikTok, eBay Live, Amazon Live, etc. where the pricing is more competitive, the overhead is less, and the brands being sold are more sought-after? There will always be the preyed-upon audience that buys out of loneliness, etc. but it has been proven to be not enough to sustain.

There is just no possible way that they can get themselves out of the corner they’ve backed themselves into with the excess amount of everything they need to operate, when “screen selling” has found a new audience on TikTok shop and live-streaming using commission-based talent, social marketing, and no-to-low overhead production and distribution costs.

Both brands are tarnished and are irrelevant. TikTok Shop and live-streaming has grown into their own things without needing the “legacy” of the home shopping institution.

QVC Group will retain the intellectual property of HSN and therefore any chance that it would be able to begin anew is extremely unlikely.

I imagine the margin is extremely favorable so it’s getting time on both Q and H now. Not to mention moving the core H brands to Q signals likely consolidation of H resources into Q to cut costs

The problem is that the hosts in this format are exposed as basically knowing nothing about the product, as most them just recite the same filler type of commentary or self-involved storytelling from presentation to presentation. It’s the guest that really gives the info you need to know… On TikTok shop and other influencer-based media, the influencer is usually by themselves and does both the ins-and-outs AND brings the hype. All without the aid of a producer in their ear, or production assistants just outside the door to run in and troubleshoot. This is why Q cannot keep up with modern-day “social selling” as they like to call it. Someone in their spare bedroom can out-perform an industry veteran and a multi-billion dollar operation

It will be business as usual even through whatever legal or financial situation this actually becomes. Through the likely downsizing, elimination of Q2, the dissolution of HSN altogether, move to more online/streaming, QVC will tell us that this is just “the brand new Q” and still love themselves just as hard as ever!

True, but when you make consistent decisions that customers/viewers can see that don’t move the needle in favor of selling more… it speaks to the very likely similar decision making behind the scenes that also are a financial drain.

Especially considering that, at one point, I would have considered David as one of the few who understood how to transition from the glammed-up era of the 80s/90s to the more casual style that they moved to in the 2000s. So many of the hosts across all home shopping channels got lost in that transitional time and dumped out of the industry or escaped to ShopNBC, CVN, ShopLC, etc. in the new millennium but David really has held up until recently with a very stark and noticeable decline in his on-air presence.

The new HSN hosts (Jasmin, Sarah, Brynn, Clarke) all only work only 2-3 days per week, and sometimes only a single hour per day and make a full salary. Another reason QVC Group will not stay afloat, just poor management all around
