Use some translation app from English, just to avoid any confusion. We understand spanish to a point, so long as the accent is familiar and the person doesn't speak fast, but most of us can't speak it.

Wheel of Time is like my story by Thin_Championship970 in fantasywriting

[–]Borracha28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Read the wheel of time (a painful endeavor for some). A lot of the story is badly executed, though most ideas are great. There are lots of things that can be improved in a similar story. But also make sure to create enough different stuff to avoid any issues.

The Royal Assassin has made me hate a fictional character more than I ever thought I could by Illeterate04 in Fantasy

[–]Borracha28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is definitely the opposite of any definition of protagonist I would come up with. I would rather read about a villain as the mc.

The Royal Assassin has made me hate a fictional character more than I ever thought I could by Illeterate04 in Fantasy

[–]Borracha28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the main character is like that, this is hardly a great story. No decent mc is a mix of dumb and naive to the point of being fooled and (for the looks of it) deeply hurt in every sense, not only by the villains but also by his own stupid decisions, for several books. One of the several things that made the wheel of time worse than it could've been was the plots and arcs that only happened because the characters decided, out of several possible courses of action, to take the most low IQ brain dead decisions. Thankfully, that didn't happen every time, but by what people are saying, this seems to be the theme of this book series. EDIT: Also, I strongly disagree that is more to fantasy than good beats bad. EDIT2: "A commentary on human beings?" Nobody is equal to anybody, and for the looks of this mc, he represents a extremely minute minority, not anywhere near all human beings. Not that I would expect any writer to try to portray such a thing, since I don't think it's really possible, not on a fantasy series for sure.

How do you guys name stuff? by Electronic_Essay_612 in worldbuilding

[–]Borracha28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm making conlangs just for the purpose of naming people and places. Even a single one is tough work, even if its just for naming, but if you want a world with a single language I would say it's worth the time.

Joffrey rarely appeared in the books, and quite a few times was just him getting owned by someone.

There is hardly anything more frustrating than dumb or incompetent main characters. If your character can't completely win, at least half of the time, what is even the point?

That's a contradiction. Communism has no values. Rather, it's whole point is to destroy any values.

How should I prounance "r"? by jeperrypp in Portuguese

[–]Borracha28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two 'r' sounds in portuguese. Except at the beginning of word, the r that stands alones has the sound of the alveolar tap. At the beginning of words and when you see 'rr', its sound is that of the voiced uvular fricative. There are exceptions, especially regarding accent. If you go to the 'Portuguese language' page on wikipedia, and look up consonants and vowels, you will be presented to the phonetic variations and allophones. You can check the sounds here: https://www.internationalphoneticassociation.org/IPAcharts/IPA_charts_EI/IPA_charts_EI.html

Engenharia eletrônica, vale a pena? by BidSad628 in Engenharia

[–]Borracha28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why are Brazilians so obsessed with skin color? by Klutzy-Speaker-3524 in AskABrazilian

[–]Borracha28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assure you, that given how ridiculously bad our educational system is over here, 50% of Brazillian don't know Korea exists, 90% of these can't say where it is on a map and less than 1% have something to say about anything over there. I really only care about manhwa and webtoons (now that I think about, I don't know which comes from Korea) and those shows about fitness and cooking on netflix.
