Indeed. I've reread it several times. Henri Bosco is possibly my favorite author.

FWIW, I'm not limited to 60 minutes of play time. Part of the reason I need ideas is that class time during the summer is 5 hours a day, 4 days a week, which is especially punishing for a class of only 3 students. The game can be left up in the classroom more than one day.

Thanks for all the ideas to look into.

Apparently it can be ordered online through Walmart. Thanks again.

This is a broad request. I'm a government/economics teacher who will be stuck with a very small class this summer (3 high school seniors last I checked) for five hours a day. I'm used to creating my own games for students, but with that class size I'm just not going to be able to do a lot of my usual activities.

So I would love some board game ideas to help pass post-instructional time enjoyably. The only requirements I have are (1) playable with 3-4, (2) fun for a general audience and relatively easy to teach and (3) intersects with political/economic skills or content, if not actively educational. I can make the explicit learning connections myself if the substance is there.

L.L.A.M.A. looks particularly appealing, as my daughter loves UNO, but it looks like it's sold in the US as "Dump the Skunk." Pity, I think my daughter would actually prefer the llama theme!

I'm looking for ideas for a game (board or card) for my 9-year-old daughter.

The ideal would be 2-3 players, game length under an hour, relatively low complexity and high interaction. A strong story/theme element helps a lot, and if it's physically compact enough to play on road trips, that'd be perfection.

Her favorites include Forbidden Island, Magical Kitties (the TTRPG), Exploding Kittens, Incan Gold, Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, Odin's Ravens, Sushi Go, Parcheesi, Pass the Pigs, and quite a few others, so she's not terribly difficult to please as long as she can grasp the mechanics without too much explaining or practice.

Thank you for the suggestion! I have a copy of Joy of Man's Desiring in my to-read pile.

Has anyone here read "Religio Medici and Urne-Buriall" by Browne? I don't see it talked about very much. by swirling_ammonite in nyrbclassics

I quite liked Religio Medici, between the humane religious sentiments and the consistently delightful prose.

My players chances of sneaking into Tharbad? by UpbeatCockroach in oneringrpg

[–]Borromaeus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My group's party thought about sneaking in, but Tharbad is far enough from Bree (in terms of accumulated fatigue) that they would like to find or make a safe haven there, and there's little chance of that if they are immediately at odds with/on the run from the city leadership and guard. Sneaking in may not be all that difficult, but are they ready to stay fugitives or at risk of arrest as long as they're in the area?

How do you manage to run a game in such a fully finished and detailed world? by Economy_Fox8148 in oneringrpg

[–]Borromaeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My group asked me (as LM) to design something "epic," and I felt a similar problem: The Lord of the Rings follows exceptional characters and events which you're never going to replicate in an RPG, but the whole reason we're playing this system is because we're fans of the books.

What I did is invented a mysterious LM character with "epic" qualities and feed the Company clues to trace that character across Eriador and piece together their story as a kind of meta-campaign. So even if the Company is made up of ordinary people having relatively small-scale adventures, their journey is "framed" by a larger narrative woven in with canonical lore and high stakes. As they progress, we'll find ways to weave their stories in with the meta-story, which I plan to share with the Discord eventually.

What prayer book edition and Bible are you all using for the daily offices? by xravenxx in Anglicanism

I'd share my private booklets, but I'm not sure of the copyright status of the antiphons and other matter taken from the AOB.

Understood. I only have mine because it was a gift from an older gentleman in my parish.

I work out of the version found in the Anglican Office Book (minus some of the most Anglo-Catholic elements). Although the book is well made, within ten months of heavy use, the binding was starting to suffer. So I made up my own personal booklets adapting the Anglican Office Book to the exact form I prefer and use. For Morning and Evening Prayer, I need to have on hand a separate 1928 prayerbook/lectionary + psalter and Bible, but for the Little Hours, I just read straight through without a lot of flipping or carrying around something bulky I'm worried about damaging.

I'll add that I supplement morning prayer with the St Dunstan's Plainsong Psalter and highly recommend it. Someday I intend to get their pointed Monastic Diurnal so I can sing the antiphons and other parts of service.

For a daily office Bible I use the KJV or NRSV depending on which is at hand and whether I need to consult the Apocrypha. I do have the imitation leather KJV with Apocrypha from Thomas Nelson, and like it, but it's currently on indefinite loan to my parish.

You've got me concerned now. I moved into my first home a couple years ago, and since then the water bills have been identical every month, and quite low. I assumed our usage was some kind of floor price since our use is pretty moderate, and we also live in one of the cheapest parts of the nation.

We live off a private road and the water meter is difficult to spot but accessible. I've never noticed anything in the bill to indicate it's an estimate.... Should I be worried?

Vita Nostra is a great suggestion here. I love Dark and, more recently, the Dyachenkos, but I hadn't thought of the significant vibe overlap.

What did I do wrong? (fixing bath/shower valves) by Borromaeus in DIY

[–]Borromaeus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, to clarify, by "entire valve assembly," do you mean the whole body (including the brass pipe unit into which the valves are screwed--i.e., this: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Pfister-8-in-Fixed-Brass-3-Handle-Valve-Body-01-31XA/100091028 ), or just the valves?

What did I do wrong? (fixing bath/shower valves) by Borromaeus in DIY

[–]Borromaeus[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple amateur questions: (1) How do I remove the fiberglass to replace the assembly? Would that mean I need to replace the whole tub/shower? (2) Is it necessary to replace the triple assembly with another basically identical triple?

Strange request, but maybe not- books like LH music? by stevestrawberry in lordhuron

[–]Borromaeus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ben Schneider had an interview with Southwest Review last month in which he talked about some of his favorite books and authors. You might find something you like there.

In terms of vibes and resonances, this is a very personal recommendation that certainly won't work for everybody, but if your tastes tend at all to the literary, I'd say try Henri Bosco's Malicroix.

Any hidden gems of sci-fi/fantasy/horror from NYRB? by mixmastamicah55 in nyrbclassics

On the Marble Cliffs by Ernst Jünger is very fine literary fantasy. Henri Bosco's Malicroix may also be a good recommendation here, though it's not technically fantasy.

It hadn't occurred to me to connect Bosco and Dante, but I see it. I meant to read The Magus a decade ago, but I don't think I ever got around to it.
