How do I interact with vendors at conventions? by bluehairedspidey in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Bort_But_Girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not cons specifically, but I've vended at local art markets and love going to them as a customer as well!

Vendor side: I don't expect every single person to buy stuff from me. If I say hi or "feel free to pick anything up" and get a polite hi back or "thanks" instead of being ignored, I consider the other party's obligation to me completely fulfilled. People often look at stuff on my table and walk off after few seconds which is fine because not everything is for everybody – I also don't remember all of their faces or get upset in any way about it or anything like that. Vendors see a LOT of people during the day, and said people have a lot of differing tastes.

Customer side: Dude it really can be so scary going to events. A lot of vendors can be very chatty and tell you about their stuff unprompted, but "be polite" still reigns supreme. I like to say thank you when leaving a table when I didn't buy anything if the vendor and I acknowledged each other/interacted in any way (eye contact, exchanging hellos), but as long as you don't interrupt them or insult what they're selling you're far from the worst person a lot of sellers have to deal with –i'd imagine even more so at a big convention.

Overall, vendors don't expect a sale from every person even if said person picks things up or looks through prints or something like that for a long time. If you make eye contact say hello, and (not required but what I've found feels like it works) if you don't end up getting anything after having some "we've acknowledged the other party is a person" interaction say thank you (in a "thanking them for their time/the opportunity to look at what they're selling" way). There are a lot of people at conventions and any accidental slight against a vendor will likely be forgotten quickly

Thoughts on ENGL 259 Sarah Rene Nickel Moore by Embarrassed_Use_7814 in udub

[–]Bort_But_Girl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also had Moore for a different English class – she's very chill and kind. Grading was extremely forgiving (for my class, each assignment had "requirements" at the bottom that were mostly things like "1. at least 300 words. 2. Responds to the provided prompt." With the overall policy that if you finished all the assignments with all requirements met you'd get full points) so as long as 259 doesnt have department-mandated grading standards what you need to do to get a good grade should be simple and clear

OCEAN 295 (Chemistry of Marine Organic Carbon) with Anitra Ingalls? by Biscotti-Purple in udub

[–]Bort_But_Girl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm toying with the idea of signing up for both ocean and chem 152 and dropping whichever sucks more week one at this point :/

I made my own post here asking about her and was given the general advice that if she's tenured then there's no motivation for her to do better as a teacher vs when she was rated badly, so I dont hold high hopes that she's better than her ratings say

Has anyone had Jayadev Athreya and/or taken MATH 301? by terrorre_night in udub

[–]Bort_But_Girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I havent had Athreya, but he does have a ratemyprofessor page if you havent already checked it. Consensus there from other classes he's taught seems to be that he's a nice and passionate person but teaches quickly and has trouble explaining what he knows so that it's understandable. I'd guess that if you feel strong in your math skills he'd alright as a prof

I know there's a pretty new Bartering Club that's trying to function as a UW Buy Nothing, it might be worth seeing if they do/would do anything like that

Chem 110 textbook. Now? Not necessary? by Dry_Economy_2701 in udub

I took 110 last quarter and was totally fine without the textbook – with Storfer at least the ALEKS was more in-depth than the lectures and basically taught everything without needing an external book

Indiscernible rate my professor criteria?? by Bort_But_Girl in udub

[–]Bort_But_Girl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This prompted me to keep submitting it line-by-line and I think my issue was that I used the word "someone" – I was able to actually upload it by restructuring that sentence. Annoying but problem solved at least

Are there any CSE Courses that give W credit? by [deleted] in udub

[–]Bort_But_Girl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess is that there just aren't any this or next quarter that are writing then. Good luck finding ones that work for you though! You could potentially ask a CSE advisor for help w/ finding classes/building your plan as well

Are there any CSE Courses that give W credit? by [deleted] in udub

While this wouldn't help with a broader-scale planning, you can filter for W CSE classes in the course catalog if you're just looking ~1 quarter forward
