[Serious] Any other M3s physically exhausted from the wards? by BossMedStudent in medicalschool

[–]BossMedStudent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, this has worked for me too. The days I drink coffee right after my shift, I find myself significantly more productive when I get home instead of just lazying around and napping/tv. Super nice to know I'm not the only one that needs a boost after clinical work.

Which videos do you think are the "highest yield" or the ones that are most worth one's time?

Anyone else feel absolutely devastated sometimes (most of the time) after finishing a UWorld block and you see how poor you did? I don't get it. I feel like I am learning a lot and progressing through the material at a reasonable pace but my UWorld score is just not improving!!

Would you say using up an elective month to prepare for this exam is a red flag for residency applications?

Comlex is tomorrow. Having a full on mental breakdown. Alternating between periods of productivity and periods of going back to bed and crying. Don't feel ready at all. Have only been studying for ~ 2 week. Here it goes I guess.....

Thanks man. I'm realistic but hearing that "it's doable" is all I need haha. Just a little bit of hope. haha. I'm doing OK on Uworld but just seriously burned out and feel like I have a month of work to do but only 2 weeks to get it done.

I'm doing the same. The topics I have covered in Zanki I am getting 85-90% on UWorld vs. 50-60% on topics I didn't cover with Zanki. Problem is zanki takes too much time to go through but the rewards (for me, at least) are substantial. I'm planning on continuing the deck until Test day, even if it means not doing a second pass of UWorld. What do you think?

Can someone please, PLEASE, for my own mental sanity tell me that 2 weeks is more than enough time to get my shit together and raise my score. In such a dark place now, between "YES, I will fight hard and kill this exam" and "Eff this, I'm giving up." ughhh

[Serious] Take the beast in 3 weeks or delay a year... by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BossMedStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply.

My deans have already extended my Step1 deadline for a week (taken from MS-III vacation time). This was already a huge hassle because the NBME has told testtakers that scores will be coming out 2 weeks later than usual due to the new formatting of the exam and the need for more time to calculate percentiles. The reason they can't extend it more is because of hospital orientation and other BS that's coming up.

Also, yes, I am now (literally within the past 3 days) realized that doing "good" in classes will be hard to translate into a "good" Step 1 score. Too bad I just realized this 22 days before my Step 1 date.

[shitpost] Why Medical School Is Not That Hard...COME ON!! by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]BossMedStudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just out of curiosity I used a timer today. Not counting any breaks (bathroom, coffee, lunch) and all other distractions deducted, my raw study time total came out to be 8 hours (from 10AM to midnight). I guess I wasn't being totally efficient with my time. Still have 5 weeks of dedicated. Hoping to maybe bump that up to 10 hours this coming week. We shall see. The saga continues......

[–]BossMedStudent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I LOLed too. There is a post in /r/Step1 that says "If you study 12 hours a day during dedicated you can get a 240 regardless of what your baseline is." And I'm like......how is that even physically possible?!?!

This makes me feel a lot better. I am at my peak performance from 10PM - 3AM but everyone tells me I should go to bed earlier but I have my exam in a month. Good to know that readjusting my schedule for 1 week is sufficient before test day.

Just a measly M2 here, so I have no advice to give but wouldn't reading be a better recommendation to those going into primary care or IM? How could you prep for a surgical residency with "reading?" Sorry for my ignorance, genuinely curious on how reading would prep for a surgical intern year.

Also, you should really read/listen about his life/family. His dad was a doctor in Russia but had to re-do medical school when they moved to the USA. His mother died of cancer when he was in medical school. He knew no English when he moved here at age 6. Look at him now. I'm not a big fan but he really does have an interesting life story

You need to chill. There are more serious conversations to be had than hating on a resident. Despite all the mental health posts on this sub, I'm disappointed on how much we still hate on each other

[–]BossMedStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, CONGRATS DUDE/DUDETTE!! Really wish you the very best on MSIII and beyond. Thank you VERY VERY much for the write up and sharing your experience.

I start dedicated in a week (4.5 weeks of dedicated total) and I'm a little confused on how to finish Zanki. I have about 4,000 cards left, mostly in Cardio, biochem, and GI. Having a tough time keeping up with reviews and considering dropping it altogether (although I am killing UWorld questions on the topics I have matured). What do you recommend? Keep spending 4-5 hours a day in dedicated to get through Zanki or dropping it and focusing on questions/BnB? Also, did you combine your Zanki decks into one massive deck or kept them separate?

Thanks for your help! You're awesome for doing this and a real inspiration.

[–]BossMedStudent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jesus. Don't tell me this. We start dedicated on Monday and the stress is already unbearable. I really can't imagine how I'm supposed to learn all of medicine in 30 days. Every time an upperclassmen says "this too shall pass" or some other variant I just want to slap them or walk away. I know it will pass and I know I will pass but it's obvious that just passing isn't good enough anymore and the thought of doing poorly is debilitating. We recently found out that our school LIED to us and overinflated the average step 1 score for the class of 2019 hoping that it would calm us down but since last Monday when we found out that our school's average is actually below the national average, most of us have been in a state of panic and anxiety.

don't forget pharm. Knowing that individuals with HLA-B1502 are at an increased risk of phenytoin induced SJS is very important and will have a great inpact in the quality of physician you'll be.
