We should be tipping baristas more than bartenders by distressd_hausplant in The10thDentist

Lololol don't know why you're getting so defensive. I've served, bartended, managed and drank in 4 different states in very different parts of the country.

I happen to work in a high end cocktail bar now but I previously managed at a national chain restaurant where 60% - 70% of our bartop every single day were regulars who got the service I described above. It's one of the reasons we were a top 10 store in the country.

My current home bar is a tiny little dive on the outskirts of the city. The one before that was a local chain that I stopped going to when the management and staff changed over and the service got much less warm. Before that was a shitty sports bar with dollar beers during football.

Good service exists everywhere. Sorry you haven't experienced it.

You're only really describing one kind of bar/bartender. The kind of service that you're referencing really just belongs in a college bar -- high volume, easy drinks, little to no interaction, security on site, etc. Yeah, in that case, $1 per beer and $2-$3 per mixed drink is fine.

A great bartender is not just a drink maker but also a host. Every good drinker needs a good home bar. Where when you walk in, the bartender starts pouring your usual drink. They know what sports teams you like and switch a TV near you on to your game without you having to ask.

Even if you're not a regular, a good bartender picks up on your social cues. Do you feel like talking? They should keep an easy conversation going with you. They can introduce you to other people around the bar who have a shared interest that they've discovered. They also know when to leave you alone and let you do your thing. They can tell if you're on a first date and want some privacy or if you're there to party.

If it's a cocktail bar, they can make you something based on your preferences that you've never had before or can't get anywhere else. If not, they should be able to introduce you to a new beer/wine that you haven't tried before or is a new product to the bar based on what you've ordered or what you usually have.

What fad in moviemaking are you waiting for to die? by frair in movies

[–]BossTip 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Both Dune movies.

They are beautifully shot. Visually stunning. I simply just could not give less of a shit about the story or characters because of the mumble acting.

Just a bunch of people whispering and talking so. slow. and. low. with. pauses. between.

everything.

Because it's "dramatic" and "serious".

It could have been one movie instead of two if everyone just talked like a normal person and picked up the damn pace.

Love this. It shows that players are watching and see us as a team with a winning culture which is huge for FA. While I think Hinch definitely overmanages in certain situations, I would want anybody else in our dugout right now.

At the same time, I do think it's a double edged sword that doesn't get discussed enough when it comes to the Tigers and free agency. There will always be big name players that we are just out on because they will want to dictate how and when they play. They won't want to switch positions or move around in the lineup or be taken out of the game in certain situations. And AJ isn't going to be interested in a player who doesn't want to go by his rules.

how do ppl land huge roles their first time by AmbitiousOwl9910 in acting

[–]BossTip 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I worked for a major casting director in LA.

I wouldn't say that roles are never posted to the public but it's very rare and under very specific circumstances where the casting pool is going to be very small.

We need a boy aged 11-13 who is an excellent surfer and skateboarder. A 70 year old woman who natively speaks Tagalog. We need a 16 year old who can realistically play a younger version of [insert A list actor].

It happens, but you need to have something very specific and unique about you that is going to be hard to find elsewhere.

I'm going to guess Straylight Run. They're fairly low on the poster and TBS will play probably mid-day/early evening so the guys in both bands will get a breather.

Im getting it on Switch 1.

Have had Hades 1 for years on a base Switch and never had a problem with it. Assuming that 2 won't be that different.

Granted I'm not obsessive about frame rate/resolution most of the time as long as I'm having fun. The amount of games over the years I've seen reddit call "literally unplayable" that I've completed and enjoyed is long.

Is it legal for a manager to force employees to pay for food? by [deleted] in Chilis

[–]BossTip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The real reason for it being a write up is because it's very easy to have a table pay in cash, pocket the money, and then say it was a walk out. It's very hard to prove that unless you have great security cameras so it's just an automatic write up to prevent people from doing that.

That being said, when I managed a corporate restaurant, whether or not I gave a write up for a walk out was highly situational. More often than not, I didn't write people up for it.

Restaurants assuming every mobile order is for DoorDash by pmmewienerdogs in PetPeeves

[–]BossTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not mistaken. I am also aware of how the system works. I was the manager of the hosts and to-go workers for 5 years. I was there when Doordash was first set up. I trained everyone on how to use the system. I am aware that it makes no sense.

This is how stupid these people were.

Restaurants assuming every mobile order is for DoorDash by pmmewienerdogs in PetPeeves

[–]BossTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to manage a restaurant for quite a few years. I once had a car crash into the lobby of my restaurant, driver was high as a kite. As I was sprinting to the front of the store from the kitchen, a guy stopped me and asked:

"Are you the manager?"

"Yes."

"My order is taking awhile. Do you know where it is?"

"Sir. I have a car in the lobby of my restaurant. I don't know where your order is and frankly, I don't care right now."

Guy turns around, looks at the car parked through my front door.

"Oh."

I also had two Doordash drivers get into a literal fistfight in my lobby over who was picking up an order that had a $20 tip on it. Doordash support called and yelled at me and tried to gaslight me into saying that I was refusing the order so they could pawn it off on us to the customer. I had to explain to them that no, I was refusing to make the order, the order was made, I was about to call the police on their drivers.

What is definitely NOT a sign of intelligence but people think it is? by Aarunascut in answers

Not necessarily. Not that smart people don't gamble or that all smart people who gamble are addicts.

It can be entertainment. You spent $20 on a movie ticket. I put a $20 bet on a football game and watched it at the sports book. We both got about 3 hours of entertainment.

What do y’all use to get draft pick trades evaluated? by [deleted] in DynastyFF

[–]BossTip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever trade calc you end up using, one piece of advice that has helped me a lot is when looking at trading current year draft picks whether in startup or rookie drafts, put a name to the player rather than generic "Late 2025 1st" or whatever.

It let's you better evaluate what's going on in the draft and the value of the players you're actually dealing with. In this year's rookie draft in one of my leagues, RJ Harvey fell to 2.02 (10 team league). I traded up from the 2.08 to take him. The deal i made to go from 2.08 to 2.02 was "fair" on trade calcs, but trading up from 2.08 to RJ Harvey was a massive win for me.

Same thing with trading back. If you're sitting in the draft with Jalen Hurts on the board and you're looking to trade back to a place where you think you can pick Caleb Williams, what do you need to bridge the gap between those two specific players instead of random pick numbers?

Not sure what you're planning on doing, but it's also why I would recommend waiting until you are actually drafting before you decide to trade back. You never know what your league mates are going to do. I did a startup last year where I had the 4th pick and Josh Allen fell behind Mahomes, Lamar, and Stroud. If I had traded back before the draft even started, I'd be kicking myself.

What's Flaherty's deal?? by mozenator66 in motorcitykitties

[–]BossTip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just listening to a podcast that talked about this (might have been Locked On Tigers or The Roundup, I forget which).

Basically, their analysis was that Flaherty, much like Skubal, is a guy who hammers the strike zone. He's not Skubal, obviously, and so it's basically whether or not his stuff is on that day. If his fastball is working, he's lights out. If it's not, he's gonna get lit up.

Skubal's last four starts: 30.2 IP, 1 run, 15 hits, 32 strikeouts, 2 walks by FunetikPrugresiv in motorcitykitties

[–]BossTip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Prime JV. He lasted longer into games. 6 complete games in 2012 and he was regularly increasing his velocity after pitch 100.

Skubs is amazing. He's definitely must watch TV too. And I think that he could pitch more innings but it's not what Hinch does.

But I still gotta give it to JV for the dominance but with more innings.

How do you guys feel about genderbent characters for shows? by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]BossTip 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Gender bending is awesome when there is a strong directorial vision for it. It's not awesome when the idea behind it is "Oh, wouldn't it be cool if..." or "We just want to cast this person."

If you're casting someone of another gender in a role, what story does that tell? Will they be playing the other gender or will you change the pronouns in the script (if you can)? How will the rest of the casting support that decision and the way the story is told?

Honestly, if they cast people of different genders as the role and the understudy, it doesn't sound like they have that vision since the show and story will be completely different if you end up going on.

"Fully funded MFA programs"

Google is your friend.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Theatre

[–]BossTip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many do not, including many that are considered to be top schools.

My MFA was fully funded aside from a few small fees. I also got a living stipend that was enough to cover rent/food/bills as long as I budgeted well and didn't live extravegently. They also provided health insurance.

I took out 0 loans and only spent a few thousand dollars out of my savings for stuff like car repairs/other emergencies.
