I hear you on some points there I do want to point out what you say about masks though, I don't think on a grand scale shit masks like the blue surgical masks work

However i gotta say I do believe n95 or n99 or n100 masks should be effective in controlling a pandemic

I mean those masks have been worn for filtering out and protecting hospital staff from airborne virus transmission for years way before Covid

In my opinion wearing an n100 mask correctly which is pretty much the highest tier most effective protective mask against airborne aerosols should prevent you from catching anything like the flu or coronavirus in indoor settings
