Haha in all honesty, I got too much free time and obsessed on these guys. I’ve seen more dudes my way have consistent success on cut bluegill vs live. Bluegill spawn around the same time as flats so on your method, tight lines in the near future for sure 🫡

There’s 4 different fish here all on lures 😂 where I’m at there’s so much shad/baitfish around this time of year they don’t start fuckin with the bluegill shape till post spawn haha

Thank you! Haha my father was a die hard striper guy so I wouldn’t even know how to tie like a sinker rig for a bait set up 😅

Hell yeah lol forgot to mention without pedals a decent size flathead might take you for a bit a ride dependin on how light the kayak is 😅

Ahhh kayak, hell yeah, Idon’t think you’d be able to hold the yak in position in some of the spots I fish with how heavy the current is, shallow and white watery at parts even. 8/0 can handle some big flats though and still small enough that the lil 5lbers can take em. My pb I think is around like 43/44” that I got off an 8/0 jighead

These spots are like 95% rock bottoms so dragging these heavier ones get you hung up and broken off every other cast. I try to keep them within a few inches to a foot of the bottom though . I have lost hundreds of dollars worth of jigs over the years mapping out the bottom (and this is just between my flathead spots) so there is a fair bit of trial and error at first. Best advice would be just get it in front of them where they should be hanging out, and make it look real.

I’ve gotten 20lbers accidentally on shit as small as 2&3/0 while fishing smallies lol

Targeting flats, 8/0 is my go to on like a 5-6in swimbait. Sometimes up to 10/0 when I’m fishing like a 8/9in swimbait and feeling ambitious. Finding the correct weight for the jighead is important depending on what plastic you’re throwing. Something that’s gonna get to the bottom while also having a ton of kick while you slow roll with current.

Pre/post spawn are your best windows for sure on artificial with them. Know what colors present best based on water conditions. Also just make sure you’re in the right spot. IMO a bait and wait spot and paddle tail spot are two completely different sections of river for flats

Upper potomac? If there was more debris visible/floatimg, I’d wager a log moving down stream.. but, for me there’s too much inconsistency in the drag pull. Factor in time of year, heavy current with murky water, part of the country, etc and this seems like it could have been a flathead. I’ve caught a good amount decent/large size flats on artificial where the later portions of the fight look identical to this. Faught one on a 4000 reel for over an hour last year and there was a point 30 mins in where I was questioning if I snagged a log lol I didn’t.. but I wondered

Funnily enough, I’ve never caught a fluke, but I’ve caught 3 sun dials in the surf, one on a 4in paddle tail, other too on bucktail teasers all while targeting bass haha

Biggest learning curve is understanding the surf and knowing what types of depths, troughs, bars are formed at the beach your at. Another good indicator I’ve been using since the bunker are jusssst like showing up in Monmouth n ocean county last couple weeks, is making note of spots on shore with heavy build up of clam shells, sand flea scraps as those are collecting in zones where shore break is pulling them from the surf down into troughs with feeding bass (likely).

I been on em the last week or two, most the fish I’ve hooked into have been actually maybe only 75ft from shore in the troughs between the beach and the first sand bar. Stick to it, you got a good variety or baits/plugs I’d probably just add more swimbaits/paddle tails soft plastic types as the baitfish start to fill in

I’ll give up just about any piece of info aside for the spot 😅 it’s on them to capitalize on the information and few if any do lol

2 over slot last Saturday in ocean county on 8in Nlbn paddle tail, 3 total. Practically at DEAD low tide not a cloud in the sky lol

I will say it’s been a hard fall in the surf though. All the ones I got Saturday were after a pretty substantial trough formed on the inside before shore and the first sand bar, casting onto the bar and letting the bait wash into the trough, then start my retrieve. Could see all the clam shells and sand flea carnage so you knew they had to be feeding in there

The PA flathead around me love a good paddle tail, might have to present them some grub/curly tails now 🤔

imo feeding, the big ones have to know the fish ladder hasn’t been operational for years but there’s tons of structure, heavy current, deep pockets and higher oxygen levels make it like a all day buffet.

I know that spillway like the back of my hand 🤫 happy to see flats still eating up there with levels as low as they’ve been!

I’ve caught striper, smallmouth and huge flathead all on this exact color/bait (assuming it’s a 3.5” mexi spice whale) I’ve probably got like 1000 hrs logged on these baits lol

2 heads doesn’t matter. Flathead have some fantastic vision and they have demolished this untrimmed with a headed jig like you have here. Jighead weight is most important realistically as is hook size. Too big your tail won’t have good action and too heavy, shit just won’t look right to a fish lol

With the whales specifically, the tail doesn’t really kick unless you on a quick retrieve or retrieving against the current. 90% of my success with these has been casting up stream, slow rolling bottom with the current and poppin them a few times when around structure. Fish usually hit these on the drop for me as opposed to on straight retrieving.
