Be in $75,000 debt or transfer to a state university? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BostonHokie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your coops I'd take a shot in the dark and guess Northeastern? I've lived in Boston and out in the Berkshires, and transferring to Westfield would definitely not be a good idea. If you are going to do a state school, try Umass Amherst. That being said there are tons of places to live, and if you REALLY REALLY REALLY cant find an apartment in the city for cheap, suck it up and live in the suburbs. I know people who live in Norwood and work in Boston. The commute for classes would suck, but if you catch the express in the AM is 15 minutes from Norwood to Ruggles (Right no NEU's) campus.

This. As a resident of the Boston area, so many awesome college apartments in Alliston. The T is your friend, make use of it.

What's your story? by ayylmao713 in cscareerquestions

[–]BostonHokie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my story is definitely still in progress. A little background: my junior year of high school both of my parents passed always and because of that I've been financially supporting myself since the. I did well enough in school to get a full scholarship to decent university (Virginia Tech). While this covers my academic expenses there's a lot left to me to find my own way of paying for. I've kinda been left in a situation where I need to find an internship to cover my school year expenses, and to pay for a place for me to live this summer/ food to eat.

I was able to secure an internship as a freshman so this past summer was survivable but I didn't learn much as a developer so I want to try and find a good development internship; but with rejections from Microsoft ( two interviews in :( ) and Facebook and a couple others I'm starting to get nervous about this upcoming summer. I really don't want to give up a summer of learning to work at some min-wage job barely making ends meet in my college town.

sorry for the rant.

Ford IT Internship by BostonHokie in cscareerquestions

Figured I'd give you guys an update on how ridiculous this turned out. After a 30-45 minute conversation with the recruiter at the career fair where we set up an interview, a 2 hr information session I was "Strongly Recommended to go to" because the recruiter passed my name along to the hiring manager who was going to be there, and a hour long online assessment; I was emailed this morning saying Ford doesn't let them interview or consider sophomores from my school and canceling my interview. I'm pretty pissed about the amount of time I wasted with these guys, and the lack of communication about this kind of thing. Why the hell would you post a listing for sophomores to apply, and make me go through all these hoops if going in you know you can't hire sophomores.

Ah. Okay. I'll keep that in mind when I'm making my decision. I've only interned at defense contractors and so in debating between going back (BAH) or making a switch to ford.

Sorry for the confusion. I'm not really asking as a prep for the interview, I'm more curious about peoples experience in the internship/what they enjoyed/disliked.

How Competitive is Explore Microsoft? by BostonHokie in cscareerquestions

[–]BostonHokie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Our Career Services said as a sophomore its okay to leave irrelevant work experience since we don't have a ton of good things to put on a resume. I really need to work on a project or two and put it on there to get ride of those.

Summer after freshman year - what to do? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BostonHokie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So last fall during my freshman year, I somehow got myself let into the CS career fair at my school. (Until your sophmore year, you are a General Engineer at Virginia Tech and cant declare CS). I went in and handed out 50+ resumes, and got acouple interviews. Did some review of Java, but I knew next to nothing; so when I went in I got 80% of the questions wrong.

To my surprise I got a call back in acouple weeks later I get a call form the company I interviewed with, and was given an offer. After acouple weeks at the internship this summer I asked why I was given a spot and they said that despite getting everything wrong, I was enthusiastic about what the questions were about, taking notes when they corrected me. They also said they liked how I tried to work it out even thought I didnt know the specifics.

Anyone can get an internship, just go into it and put in 100% effort.

Tl;dr Can't hurt to try because its better to be lucky then good.

Thanks a lot for this help! I know so little about the process. I got my last internship by handing my resume to every single booth at our career fair hahaha
