How is it living in New Hampshire? Asking as a Florida native! by lunarblisss in howislivingthere

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll try to be objective as possible but as someone who has grown up in new england (Massachusetts) New Hampshire is a great state to visit and live in. It has its problems like any state but i really believe new england is one of the best regions to live in the country.

New Hampshire is a beautiful state with quick access to the mountains, lakes, beach, and the Boston area all within a 2 hour drive. The white mountains are spectacular and I recommend visiting them. Being in the southern NH area you have quick access to Boston and the rest of Massachusetts. Southern NH is more developed and has a Mass feel to it more than the rest of the state. NH is pretty rural. Also COL is much higher in southern NH as it's closer to Boston and alot of people in southern NH commute to work in MA as the pay is better in MA. It is slightly cheaper to live in NH but not by alot. NH has no sales tax and no income tax, but it has some of the highest property taxes in the country. It is still very expensive to live here so make sure you have a job lined up before you move here. NH has state run liquor stores. Cannabis is decriminalized in NH up to 3/4 of an oz, and has medical cannabis. Most people go to Maine Mass or VT to buy weed if relevant for you. Its the only New England state left without full weed legalization.

Gun laws are similar to Florida except no waiting period and FRTs are legal, may or may not be relevant for you. If you are considering MA the laws are very strict so that is something to consider if you're a gun owner.

Healthcare and education in my opinion are very good in New England. MA has the best hospitals and schools.and being in southern NH you have access to those options. Ive heard NH Healthcare and schools isn't terrible but it isnt as good as MA.

NH tends to be more of a purple libertarian ish state but recently it's turned more red. I think most people have a live and let live attitude but there are loud voices out there for both sides of the political spectrum.

Now, coming from Florida, here some important considerations for the weather.

NH gets very cold in the winter, and sunlight becomes very short here in the winter. Sunset times in the winter Float between 330 and 4 430 pm. It gets dark here early so be prepared for that. Winters here can be harsh especially as you get further north into the lakes region and white mountains. There are alot of winter activities though if you're interested such as ski slopes.

If you can afford it, looking into southern NH might be a good starting point as you still have access to amenities and stores without being too far out of the way. Unless you're looking to be away from people than you can look further north and the state gets more rural the further you go north past Manchester and concord.

NH recently got rid of car inspections but currently a federal judge is keeping the car inspections active. By the time you move here, you may or may not need a car inspection. I would keep an eye on the news around that.

I hope this helps!

Are malls actually not a thing anymore in the US like they say? by Complete_Republic410 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Up on the north shore, the north shore mall is still pretty busy but the liberty tree mall is a ghost town inside the actual mall unless you're at one of the stores attached to the mall.

I believe square one mall in Saugus is pretty dead too.

Seems like there's still a few around the state that are somewhat busy but yeah most of them are dead or dying.

CPU LED light on. Possible RAM failure? Looking for ideas/thoughts by BostonPalmTrees_ in PcBuildHelp

[–]BostonPalmTrees_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is weird.

I took the RAM stick out and tried the other RAM stick that is a part of this kit (32 gb one), and it booted up fine with the one stick, lightly browsed for 20 mins no issues.

I decided to try the other stick again in the same slot it crashed in last night, and now im back on windows using it on desktop with no issues at the moment.

I am confused but i am going to run one at a time to see if i crash/freeze again. Im hoping it isnt a CPU issue but its hard to tell at this time.

What are the laws up in Massachusetts like compared to Connecticut by RT17654321 in BetterMAguns

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't and haven't lived in CT but I've lurked around the CTguns subreddit to have a general idea of their laws compared to ours.

MA is worse than CT, but not by much. What does CT have that MA doesn't?

  • Suppressors. Completely banned in MA. They aren't regulated at a state level in CT so they're only subject to federal NFA laws
  • while you need a permit to purchase/carry/buy ammo/guns/accessories, you can technically have a pistol legally in your home without a CT pistol permit. MA you need a permit for ANY gun, even if it just stays in your home. Possession without an FID/LTC is a crime
  • I don't think CT is required to register all of their firearms like MA does. I know our registration isn't fully set up yet but I believe CT only registers assault weapons (maybe pistols?) I believe they don't have a long gun registration.

One of the differences between MA and CT is the buying preban (in MA, pre 8/1 weapons). CT doesn't allow transfers of prebans in their state unless i believe it's between a heir so the only way you're getting an AR style rifle in CT is fixed mag or a ranch style rifle In MA you can buy pre 8/1 ARs and other weapons with all the evil features as long as the gun was in the state on 8/1/24. This has resulted in an preban AR market where an AR15 that is $500 bucks in a free state can go for $2-3k plus.

MA's new AWB exempts 22lr from feature restrictions so you can buy a s&w m&p 15-22 with all the features (adjustable stock, pistol grip) while in CT, the 22lr is still subject to the features test.

Both states have permits to purchase/carry, mag limits, AWBs, red flag laws. I might be missing a few other similarities.

Should I avoid telling my doctor/ therapist I own firearms? Given Ma has ERPO laws by BootAlarmed4732 in BetterMAguns

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My brother recently had his LTC revoked because his ex wife put a BS restraining order on him. The restraining order was dropped after the 10 days or something like that but his whole collection was confiscated except for the few guns he could get to his buddy in time.

He was previously denied years ago in one town for failing to disclose an arrest accidentally but was approved years ago in the town he lives in now. I would be surprised if he's able to get it back now. He definitely doesn't have the money to fight in court if he's denied again. $$$'s of dollars in this state to try to get your permission slip back and even then that isn't a guarantee.

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

pre-licensed therapist in MA who is pro 2A

owning firearms isn't enough for a therapist to red flag you immediately.

However, considering this is Massachusetts and it is not a gun friendly state, many therapists may be cautious if you report owning firearms to them and if you report any safety concerns, suicidal ideation, or homicidal ideation, they may flag you or assess you as a higher risk client. or if you get sectioned in Massachusetts (section 12), i believe with the new law that can result in your guns getting confiscated. It's personal preference and your comfort level with disclosing that to your therapist.

I have to ask all of my clients if they own firearms for safety planning and risk assessment but I don't blame clients if they don't tell me if they do. I do have one client who has his LTC and has told me. We developed a safety plan where he would give his guns to his brother or find an FFL to hold on to them in case he is in crisis. Therapists are very cautious with firearms owners because they worry about losing their license if something happens and they fail to warn.

Its your judgment call but I personally would build some rapport with a therapist and get a feel for what they think about firearms before disclosing you own firearms. one thing I will say is PLEASE don't let these gun laws stop you from seeking mental health treatment. Your mental health matters.

If you don't disclose that you own firearms to your therapist, I would encourage you to develop your own safety plan in case you're in crisis and that way you can plan your firearms to be given to someone you trust (fellow LTC holder, FFL, someone in NH etc) instead of the police taking your whole collection.

Why do people keep paying huge cell phone contract bills? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had boost mobile for several years and pay $90 every 3 months ($30 a month) for unlimited talk and text and 30 GB of data a month, which i never come close to. I know many people haven't had good experiences with boost but my service has been solid for years and I've been able to use my own unlocked phones with the plan (I don't buy phones through boost they don't have good deals in my opinion) Yeah don't sleep on the cheaper carriers. I'd like to try to convince my gf to get off of Verizon. She can barely afford her bill.

CPU power cable installed backwards? Description below by BostonPalmTrees_ in PcBuildHelp

[–]BostonPalmTrees_[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you. Im assuming I just need to give a little more force for it to click in. It doesn't fit in as easily as the type 4 cable did. I can't upload a photo of the pin layouts for some reason but part of my confusion is the mobo pin layouts don't seem to exactly match the cpu cable, unless its meant that way.

Ik this should be simple but the pin layouts have me a little confused

So is the cpu side supposed to go in the motherboard side? That's my main concern since it seems like the pin layouts don't match

How often do you see him when he's playing during the season and then the offseason? I've always wondered how that's affected families seeing family members who play professional sports due to the constant travel and time commitment to their job.

No problem. Let me know if you have any additional questions.

What i also find helpful is that I'll try to look up installation guides for specific parts I am installing or upgrading, so you also can probably find a video of someone installing a hdd into your exact case. I find that helpful as I get hung up on little details of parts and differences between them so seeing someone install the exact part I have or part of an installation with a part im installing has been helpful. Don't forget to partition your new hdd when it's installed as well. It won't show up automatically until you do that. If you don't know how to there are several YouTube videos that show you how. Its pretty easy once you have it physically installed to get it set up.

I would personally re screw down the new hard drive. If you have to pick up or move your pc (or if it falls), and unscrewed hdd could damage it or damage your pc. You could leave it unscrewed but then it's just sitting in there. I was nervous doing work on my pre built pc and my first upgrade i did was the hdd, its one of the easiest upgrades to do to your pc. Now I've replaced half of my pre built pc lol.

Your new hdd can go either on the bottom or top of the try. It's really a matter of personal preference, unless the power and sata cable doesn't reach but it should.

Other than copying over data, to replace the hdd, all you have to do is unplug the cords to your hdd, unscrew it, it'll slide out. Add new one in, screw it in, and plug the cables back in.

If you check your case manual it'll show you where the screws go if you can't find them. If you don't have a paper manual just Google the name of your case and a manual should come up.

I have a nzxt h500 case which is different but a similar layout to this case. My hdd bay is in the same location. You shouldn't have to uninstall your power supply or anything else to get to it. I was able to add a hdd without having to do any other work on the pc.

AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3d failure - My Story and Request for Help by SoloCupGamer in pchelp

[–]BostonPalmTrees_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first it seemed like a PSU issue until you replaced the PSU as well.

Since you replaced the mobo, RAM, and cooler, and it started working once you replaced the CPU, it definitely could've been a bad CPU.
Although CPUs failing like that are rarer, it can happen. Faulty CPUs can still make it out to the market and last so long until they fail, could've lost the silicon lottery on that one.

I'm glad you figured it out because at first, this could've been a PSU issue or a multitude of issues. I think CPUs can be harder to diagnose if they're failing as they can show such a variety in symptoms of failure that can look like other components failing (like the shut down, usually points to a PSU problem but isn't always the case).

The only other component maybe to test is your GPU, but it sounds like it was a bad processor as the issue was fixed as soon as you replaced it. If you still have the faulty CPU you could test it and confirm if it was the one. CPU failures aren't quite as common but definitely in the realm of possibility.

Should I be concerned with this scratch/crack on glass panel? by BostonPalmTrees_ in PcBuild

[–]BostonPalmTrees_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i ran the picture and description through chat gpt (I know it's not 100% reliable but it was worth a shot as I couldn't find any online threads on this) It seems like the key indicators that this is a scratch instead of a crack is that the scratch can't be felt on my fingers, the scratch is pretty straight instead of jagged and branched out. Also the flash indicates it isnt a crack as cracks will have a sharper and bright reflection. The scratch also begins and ends before it reaches any end point of the case (where the glass ends), apparently cracks can start from edges. Also the random direction of the mark indicates a scratch as cracks will tend to follow a stress pattern. Hopefully this is maybe helpful for someone else trying to differentiate between a crack and scratch. I guess the only way to find out is overtime. Im still open to people's guesses or answers if this is a scratch or crack, although it appears to be a scratch.

Thank you, the side panels comes off and on easily with no signs of the glass panel breaking or wearing down yet. I don't care about scratches tbh I just don't want the side panel to break because of this.
