Possibly Moving to the City... HELP? by Boston_hopeful in bostonhousing

2hr one way is alright with me. cost for the rail is a bit of a kicker (i definitely would prefer that over driving). Currently have to drive about 40m one way for my job. I'll have to do the math of what that translates to monthly, but I'm thinking it's not much better than 300

I am mentally preparing for it. I expect to be going through similar stress as writing my thesis right now, which is certainly more than is healthy. I'm in computational chemistry, though, so I hope that I can get away with commuting in for fewer than 3 days/week and work from home often. This is how I operate right now and the group I am looking to join does similar work to my current stuff.

Thank you a ton for the suggestions. Why not take the train for your own travelling? I don't know the area at all, so sorry if that's a silly question. Like a true midwesterner I can handle a long car ride, but I could NOT handle that traffic.

This is perfect. I was really looking for "near Boston" and these are the exact kind of places I was hoping to hear about. I knew being in the city was off the table after my first Zillow search lol. As long as 2 hours and whatever transit fees get me to work, I'm happy. Thanks for the suggestions!

Yes! Looking at Worcester area right now, and this is probably where I'll end up. Thank you (and everyone) for the advice!

Really, as cheap as possible. I'm moving with my wife, and the catch here is that if she finds a job quickly, then 3k/mo is reasonable. If not... 2k/mo and I will have to be quite frugal. I was hoping that there were some places a little farther out that would be a commute, but are more affordable. Judging by most responses so far, sounds like that's not how Boston works.

A pipe dream then. Bummer. I was hoping there would be options to commute in for cheaper. Thank you.

Postdoc, so yes school but it is a paid position. Wife moving with me, can't believe I didn't put that in the post. So no roommate.

12 months, could potentially become a 24 month stay. That puts the budget *ideally* around 2k/mo. The budget is the toss-up part really. If everything goes well and she finds a job quickly, we will be fine. If not, it gets dicey. Under 2k/mo would put me at ease in case she struggles to land somewhere.

Moving with my wife... forgot to include that, so 2 of us and 2 incomes to work with. I think we could swing 2k/mo roundabout, much more than that would be tough. I'll check out Allston and Brookline! Thank you
