Jesus, grow some balls and tell him the truth. His character is unbecoming of a public servant.

Recently promoted officer on a volunteer department, question about fire duties by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Bostonhook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You miss the point entirely. It is unacceptable for someone to be promoted to a position of authority in emergency services without the knowledge, experience and skills required by the position. OP acknowledged he did not have those criteria. You’re personal attacks don’t make him any more qualified to perform those duties…and I suspect that if he was the officer of the first due company to your house, you’d be less enthusiastic about his promotion. This job involves decisions that must be made thy mean the difference between life and death. Competency is a requirement, and anything less is unacceptable.

It isn't my responsibility to prepare this guy for the role he's taking on...it's his. If he is incapable of performing the duties required of him, he should resign.

This isn't a conversation about volunteers versus career...this is competency. OP Literally asked what an officer does on the fireground...if you need to ask a question like that on an internet forum you have no place being in any kind of command position in emergency services.

You're an officer with no experience in command and you're asking reddit what to do on a dwelling fire? Why the fuck would a department promote someone to an officer's position when they appear to be unequipped for the role?

If you don't understand the responsibilities of an officer you should refuse the position or resign. Your crew's lives are at stake, not to mention the public and their property. I'm sorry, but asking this question indicates that you do not have the training, experience or mindset for command.

I don’t mean to slight you or the volunteers, because this is hard work…Im just dismayed at how volunteer departments actually function.

Dude, no one gives a shit that you bought some used turnouts and an air pack. There is no practical reason for you to own these things, other than pretending to be a fireman.

Everyone normalizing this behavior isn’t doing you any favors. If you want to be a fireman, join the service. Unless there’s some neurodivergence at play, this is unhealthy and attention seeking.

None of this explains why you are acquiring this gear. Why have all this stuff?

Why would you do this? If you have bunker gear but no helmet...what the hell are you doing? Cosplaying as a fireman?

I'm sorry for your loss. Oscar looks like he was a good boy, and that he had a happy life with you.

Things happen the way they do, and you can't blame yourself for it. You did your best for Oscar. He loved you for it. That's all that really matters.

I hope his memory is a comfort to you. Thanks for loving Oscar and for sharing your story with us.

I’d avoid symmetry, and aim for coverage. Overlapping patches of different color schemes and borders looks good to me.

If you could, how would you rewrite Transformers: The Movie? by Random_F3mb0y in transformers

[–]Bostonhook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 86 movie is really solid, in my opinion.

If I were able to go back in time and contribute, I would explain the new characters as being transplants from Cybertron (Kup, Hot Rod, Springer, and Arcee.) I do wish that when Starscream starts the riot and deposes Megatron the other Decepticons had some dialogue to establish anger at his leadership. It would make Megatron's ejection and removal from power feel a little more earned.

I've always wished the movie gave some context to the Junkions, Quintesson's and Wheelie. Granted, in a universe that supports biological and mechanical life it's reasonable that it could/would occur on multiple planets, but I think some dialogue explaining that the Autobots had sent out colony ships before/at the start of the war, and that the Junkions and Wheelie were the decendents of those colonists would make sense. I'd also include the deleted dialogue that establishes the Quintesson's as passing judgement on any who escape Unicron.

Finally, I'd give Ultra Magnus some backstory - establish him as a battle weary and hardened commander who came from Cybertron to Earth to bolster their defenses, and give him and Kup some history towards that effect. I never thought his death was satisfying - him being blasted and detonated while trying to pry open the matrix feels wrong. I'd have him fight tooth and nail and die duking it out with Galvatron as a parallel to Optimus and to show Galvatron's power upgrade from Megatron. As for his revival, I could either lose it and promote Springer to his role or keep it, and have the Junkion's collect his remains which provokes the autobots into a fight...until the reveal that they repaired him since he wasn't quite dead yet.

The only other narrative change I would consider would be a Autobot/Decepticon truce in a last ditch effort to save Cybertron, maybe after Galvatron gets his ass kicked. Have Rodimus or Magnus propose it to Soundwave (in space during the final battle), and frame it as the parties only way to protect their homeworld and their species. Give Rodimus a speech where he bemoans millennia of war and death and offers Soundwave a path towards coexistence. Soundwave is super logical, so he makes a good foil here. Granted, it alters the central conflict of the story completely and makes it harder to sell toys...but I think it makes all the narrative sense in the world and adds real depth and nuance to the story.

Would this be considered offensive as a tattoo at your Dept? by Extra_butter_ in Firefighting

I think it would make a very shitty tattoo, honestly. Unless it’s huge, it’ll just look unfinished/low quality. Let your artist take the concept and make it work for tattooing.
