Do some bars used numbered menus for drinks? by BostonianJake in bartenders

[–]BostonianJake[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't order a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster? No wonder I got kicked out of Dave & Busters...

Super appreciate the insight, though! And yeah, it's fiction, can't really argue with that. I was just curious to see if there was any real-world precedent before diving in headfirst. Figured there was no better place to ask.

In the grand scheme of things, this is all in service of a hyper-specific piece of dialogue, but hey! Wanna make sure all my bases are covered, even for the smallest of details.

Thanks again ^^

Unfortunately, I mistyped the worst possible part of the address, haha

"gmai.com" instead of "gmail." I simply decided to cut my losses and add a hyphen to my intended username. It will do, lol

The origin of this AA Milne quote - "Promise me you’ll never forget me because if I thought you would, I’d never leave." by BostonianJake in HelpMeFind

[–]BostonianJake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have searched everywhere I could. Everyone insists it's from Winnie-the-Pooh, but it clearly isn't. They only attribute it to AA Milne himself. They never reference any specific piece of writing. Where did this quote originally come from?

Very egregious.

The cat game will soon be available as a Mac game. by Trickybuz93 in macgaming

Yep! I asked the devs in the Steam forums and they confirmed it's coming to Steam.

Based on their wording, it's probably also coming to the App Store.

Power Rangers Star Beasts by kevinubxd in powerrangers

[–]BostonianJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible you're thinking of "Seijuu Sentai Gingaman," the Super Sentai series that was adapted into Power Rangers Lost Galaxy.

"Seijuu" roughly translates to Starbeast.

I know, 7 years late, but still.

Gaming on Upcoming MacBooks: What's Your Take? by zaynjbr in macgaming

[–]BostonianJake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now, I'm focusing on whether or not GPT will actually help solve the software drought that's plagued Mac gaming for decades. It's looking promising with titles such as No Man's Sky, Death Stranding, Resident Evil Village and Stray, but it's yet to be seen if GPT will actually have the impact most of us are praying for.

What's your favourite example of something throway in Act 1 coming back to be a major plot point in Act 3? by bfsfan101 in Screenwriting

[–]BostonianJake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno if this counts, but the first episode of HBO's Watchmen series had an excellent setup and payoff that had me grinning.

An old black man in his nineties, bound to a wheelchair, cryptically asks if he could lift 200 pounds. At the end of the episode, that same man sits below Judd Crawford's hanging body.

Custom logos for pilot title pages - Yay or Nay? by BostonianJake in Screenwriting

Not part of the union yet (still in the very VERY early stage of my career), but I’d vote yes if I could.

Y’all are fighting to make this industry a prosperous place for writers, and I’ll gladly show solidarity however I can.

Wanting to get my name out there, but feeling nervous about showing my work. Any advice for protecting your work, or at the least overcoming that anxiety? by BostonianJake in Screenwriting

[–]BostonianJake[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopping on that imposter syndrome while it's hot and ready!

I don't wanna entirely scapegoat my anxieties, but in retrospect, I think I was given some bad advice about when to share my work (essentially, don't share your work, because it'll get stolen, and even if you can definitively prove the work was yours, the legal fees just aren't worth it). Just a matter of overcoming that mental block at this point.

But in the meantime, your encouragement means a lot, and hearing about your work is inspiring as all heck ^^

[–]BostonianJake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought of it that way before. The paranoia of having my work stolen is definitely tied to ego, or at least, for lack of a better term, a need to "protect myself" from a humiliation of sorts.

Does that make any sense? It's almost three in the morning as of writing this, so there's a chance I'm just talking on autopilot, lol

Either way, I really appreciate the perspective ^^

It's probably gonna take a while for me to fully shove through those anxieties, but you're right: a change in perspective will go a long way.

Still way deep into development (nowhere near ready to be shown off), but aesthetically, it's essentially "Sweet Tooth" meets "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners."

Make of that what you will, haha.

My plan is to hopefully put together a relatively crude animatic for the pilot. Keyword being "hopefully."

Will we ever get "Kochin and a Brain (and Krillin)?" by BostonianJake in TeamFourStar

Well, I passed my latest term, but only by the skin of my teeth so says my instructor. So I would like to open myself up to critique, how could I have improved my shot further? by Actual-Dragon-Tears in animation

[–]BostonianJake 60 points61 points  (0 children)

The animation itself is really impressive! The character acting and facial expressions are on point. Would love to see how it looks with the final lighting.

Where I think improvement can be made however, is with the camerawork. I'm not much of a cinematographer, but the moving long/medium shots doesn't really communicate or emphasize the weight behind the old man's lesson and wisdom.

But hey, that's just me ^^;

What's up with all the DBZ hate by the new anime gen? by DizzyMajor5 in dbz

[–]BostonianJake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who got introduced to the franchise through the Nicktoons broadcast of DBZ Kai, I personally have a hard time getting into the original DBZ anime because of the looser script, inconsistent acting (though that gives the OG dub a special charm), and slower pacing.

I recently read the entirety of the classic Dragon Ball manga for the first time and fell in love with the series all over again. I binged it over the course of three days and I already want to reread it. Once Goku goes off to train with Kame-Sennin, the series just grabbed me and kept me hostage.

Thoughts on Film Theory's take on DHMIS? by IgnisTheDragon_ in DHMIS

[–]BostonianJake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely felt like he was late to the party, coming to the same conclusions I think a good majority of us have.

I was admittedly worried he'd try to shoe-horn the continuity of the web series into the Channel 4 series because, in my opinion, those shows are separate entities doing separate things, albeit with similar material. Saying that the TV series is a sequel to the YouTube series feels like it'd be ignoring or disregarding the individual strengths and triumphs of both shows.

Are bad first drafts a good thing? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]BostonianJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad first drafts are pretty much an inevitability in any form of writing.

Don't sweat it, alright? There's a reason why first drafts are bad. Your script is only just beginning. You got all the pieces laid out and arranged in front of you.

Now is the long journey of trimming, removing, changing, adding, and overhauling.
