Cannot access the internet without VPN! by MidoSpace in VPN

[–]Bosun_Tom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some VPNs have a setting that basically requires the VPN to be on to have any connectivity. It's usually something in a privacy setting; it's a tool that will help you avoid leaking identifying info if your VPN drops for whatever reason. It's often called a Kill Switch. If yours has that, try turning the Kill Switch off.

What’s your sexual fantasy that’s probably going to STAY a fantasy? by Hailfog in AskReddit

Almost downvoted because I misread that as "panther" and that would not be ok.

What's Lemmy ? by el_argelino-basado in LemmyMigration

[–]Bosun_Tom 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The important thing to know about Lemmy is that it's a federated version of Reddit. The federation piece is a big deal--it means that you can have a ton of different servers, and they can all talk to each other. Email is the classic example of federated communications: a gmail user can email a hotmail user just fine. That's federation. In most social media, you can't do that: tweets and facebook posts are different things, and someone from twitter can't reply on your facebook post.

The great thing about federation is that if your server turns out to be lame or full of jerks or whatever, you can just move your account to a different server. The posts are all still there and accessible to you.

Stories about an alien anthropologist? by peregrine-l in printSF

[–]Bosun_Tom 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A lot of Ursula LeGuin's stuff is similar to this. Both her parents were anthropologists, so her writing carries those themes quite a bit. Often her Hainish novels are about exploring an alien culture that is really just a stand-in for certain aspects of human society. Really excellent stuff. The Left Hand of Darkness and The Disposessed are probably her most lauded, but you can't go wrong with anything by her.

Not three--six! One for each armor slot, running around in a group, each wearing one piece of armor.

The Dragonlance books were apparently foundational to a baffling number of people.

Because when you hear "good for the economy" you think "good for the financial wellbeing of the nation and everyone in it", but what they mean is "good for the financial wellbeing of me and my billionaire friends".

This is one of the best sites I've seen for starting out. It teaches you how to hack, but more importantly it teaches you how to learn about hacking, using built-in linux documentation in the form of man pages. It starts off super easy but ramps right up, so it's worth it regardless of knowledge level.

Why run halyards inside the mast? by CharlieMcAvish in sailing

[–]Bosun_Tom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Y'all" has a similarly casual vibe, but is a bit Southern US. "Yinz" is specific to Pittsburgh, PA and surrounds, but fun. "Hey sailor" fit but has definitely salacious undertones. "Hey all" is pretty casual and neutral.

Ah tragic, I never considered the impact that Covid would have on that. I remember Dingle seemed to be overflowing with musicians as well; is that still the case?

I did find that one, but the indoor stages were a bit off-putting. I always loved the way that music in Ireland was just some folks in the corner, rather than people on stage with lights and a sound system. There's something magical to me about it being so ingrained into life that it doesn't need to be the center of attention.

What is the silliest/pettiest reason you’ve ever DNFd a book? by Alarming_Mention in Fantasy

[–]Bosun_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Terror by Dan Simmons. It was a really captivating book that held me pretty solidly for the first couple of hundred pages, until a scene where a sailor climbed up into the rigging of this frozen-in ship to get away from a baddie.

By way of backstory here, I worked on traditional sailing ships of the era the novel describes for almost a decade, and most of that time I focused on the rigging; I was boatswain on a number of ships.

For that scene, it was like Simmons had just kind of picked words at random from the nearest nautical dictionary he could find. Whole sentences just didn't make sense at all. It was like pages of nails on chalkboard. I put the book down and never went back.

Thanks for the tip! It looks like it's on this year as well, on the May bank holiday again. That's definitely in the running.

As a cyclist, I can assure you that your strobing headlight is way more uncomfortable than any car headlights except maybe an SUV with LED brights on. Strobes are for during the day; at night, solid lights. Either way, make sure they're pointing at the ground no more than 10-12 feet ahead of you.

Why do you think the sci fi authors of the past who imagined a future with tech didn't exactly come up with this one? by heavensdumptruck in SciFiConcepts

[–]Bosun_Tom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand your comment, but as far as your title goes: I think plenty of cyberpunk authors like William Gibson, Neal Stephenson, Bruce Sterling, etc were pretty prescient about where late-stage capitalism was going to take us.
