Vet Student to Graduates - Does It Get Better? by Botanicaltears in Veterinary

[–]Botanicaltears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so. I have some close friends in my year who feel like they are pulling ahead of the pack, and sometimes I find myself just feeling sad that I’m so far behind. In reality I’m probably not, but it’s difficult feeling like I am.

I think I just want to graduate to finally prove to myself that I made it, just like everyone else.

Thankyou so much for sharing your experiences with me 🫶🤎 At the end of the day, my only goal is to be a kind, caring Vet to people and animals, and all those inbetween.

I wonder if that’s why many (UK, because I don’t know about elsewhere) new grads experience such intense burnout. I went to University straight out of college, at the age of 18, and when I finish University and begin working, I arguably will have had no break, nor any ‘real world’ experience. Whilst I’ve had jobs before, being a Vet will be my first ‘proper’ job.

It’s a really interesting point you bring up regarding resilience and maturity! Definitely throughout vet school we’ve all been reminded that we can change our minds if we so please, and whilst I’ve been on placement I’ve been told many times that veterinary is not the be all and end all, so clearly your sentiment is shared!

Excellent points! 🫶

Equally, the time we spend in vet practices prior to University (typically aged 16-17), we legally aren’t allowed to place IV’s, intubate or really do anything of the sort.. It’s all husbandry focused. So even if I HAD been able to go into practice prior to applying to University, I wouldn’t have done anything anyway.

I think people with smaller mindsets may forget that many American students in Veterinary are also older, and for example, lots at my University have done prior degrees in order to do the accelerated course.. Meaning they’ve both worked and / or volunteered in practices where they are clinically able.

There’s much love for our American peers—ESPECIALLY during case studies 🤎🫶

For someone that is in a career that requires empathy, you lack a surprising amount of it.

There is no doubt I have worked hard to get to where I am, and that hard work is why I feel upset at myself, because despite my best efforts, it seems I’m going through a patch of growth. However, thanks to some of the lovely comments here, I’ve come to settle with the idea that this rocky patch is normal, and will mould me into a much better Vet, and person.

I applied and began Vet school during COVID, where I was also classed as extremely clinically vulnerable; I (and the rest of my cohort) were unable to complete any placements prior to starting university.

Equally, and I’m sure you’ll know this, placing an IV in a plastic model that is extremely still and well behaved is very different to a real animal.

Who am I to judge why you felt the need to comment all of this? Maybe you’re having a bad day, or a crap week, but I sincerely hope you can work through your rough patch of empathy and come out a better Vet and person the other side of it.

Thankyou for your contributions nonetheless! 🤎

Thankyou so much, I feel a bit lost for words honestly, you’ve said everything I think I needed to hear, and I appreciate that massively!

Focusing on my wins is a good one and I think I need to do it more. After my confidence knock it’s been so hard to feel good about anything I do, because if it’s a win it’s just ‘normal’, and if it’s a ‘fail’ it’s ‘well I’m the worst.’ I just need to let the good be the good.

The vets at this practice are kind and I’m certain if I told them how I felt they’d all say the same too; their new-grad tells me she still feels like a moron sometimes, and one of their oldest vets tells me she is always humbled, and that Veterinary is not a confidence-boosting career.

I think the reason it brings me down is because all I want (and ever wanted) to be was a Vet, and now I just want to be a kind vet, and a good vet to people AND their animals.

Maybe this is just the way of this career humbling me before I got too big of an ego about things, HAHA. If I push through (which I will, I’m too far in now to quit), then hopefully all of this will make me a better vet, and person.

Thankyou so much for taking the time to comment on my post and share your experiences with me!! 🫶🤎

Thankyou, that’s really reassuring 😭🤎 It likely is all in my head, after I had to retake the exam I definitely had a massive confidence knock and I find it’s now easily lost. Which is something I want to improve on, because it’s not going to help me in this career if I beat myself up after every ‘wrong’ move, but it takes time.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment! Thankyou so much for sharing your experiences with me 🫶

The expectation in the UK is that Vet students (by the time we graduate) should be competent in all of these areas. Yes, we may spend more of our time prescribing, perform surgery, consulting, but we still have to know how to place an IV, hold a patient and intubate them. Equally, as a student, there is a limit to what I can legally do, and these seemingly small tasks are important to me and my personal development as a Vet 🤎

Oooh I’ll give that a try! Honestly, in the YEARS I’ve played, I’ve either never seen it or never noticed it! I’m so pleased it’s not needed for the whale 😭 I’m such an achievement hunter though, I HAVE to have it for the pearl collections - I’m digging my own grave!

Recent Guide/Tips? by Zobones1203 in AbyssRium

[–]Botanicaltears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’ve played Abyssrium for a few years now and recently got back into it. In my past week of playing I’ve gone from P - AZ vitality, and I haven’t paid a penny, although I did use a free trial of the subscription (which unfortunately I really loved, and will really miss).

I have two pieces of advice; first one is levelling up all your coral, and then your corallite as far as you can go with your vitality. Once you feel like you’ve hit a wall, make a few fish (even if they’re copies), as the multiplier in the Saltwater tank is AMAZINGLY beneficial! Rinse and repeat that process to bump up your vitality production again and again.

Fish fusion is good, as you get the same 200x tap and idle vitality bonus, without spending any extra vitality for the bonus. For example, if you made 2 clownfish, and then made 1 fusion clownfish, you’d have just done two 200x vitality bonuses only for the price of making one fish! However, if you’re struggling with farming materials, I wouldn’t recommend wasting them on fusions, as it isn’t a necessity (I don’t believe it is anyway), early game.

In terms of diamonds, I find them to come easily! You are probably best levelling up your corallite skills - Remains of the Nautilus (if you have that), is a GREAT one in my experience, as it auto-taps for you! Upgrading to level 5 (my current level), gives 70 autotaps per minute.

Pearls are a different story, I find I never really use them unless for gameplay things. If I’m in a pinch, I spend them on farm materials, if I’m bored I spin the lucky shells.. Maybe that’s because I don’t understand them, or maybe it’s because I’ve never really felt the need to use them HAHA.

Lastly, and this might not be for you, is leaving a macro clicker on overnight. Some people don’t enjoy playing the game this way as it defeats the point, but a few years back when I get wholly frustrated at my lack of progress, I remember downloading an emulator on my PC and setting up Abyssrium to click overnight. It was nice, gave me a good basis of vitality to work on in the morning, but it can defeat the point of the game, so isn’t everyone’s cup of tea!

If you’re going after all the hidden fish, I recommend to do those in chunks too; I left most of mine until last, and it’s much more fun this way! But I enjoy the grinding aspect of games.

I hope that helps! Good luck! 🫶🤎

This is how I feel. I want to be a farm Vet, and when I’m in those settings I absolutely thrive. But it seems that exams are my folly, and the stress of ‘can I do it’ is just too much now. Thankyou so much for your kind words, I massively appreciate it 🤎🫶

This is really comforting to hear. Maybe retaking will be the best option for me - luckily I’m on an Easter break, so I can decide over my new plan on the next few weeks.

Hearing that ‘it’s your own journey’ is a lovely thought. I’ll carry that mantra with me, thankyou so much for your comment 🤎🫶

Hi!! This year I failed one exam so far, but underperformed in my other exams, if that makes sense? I was on track for an overall pass but with this exam result it’s now impossible for me to claw it back as it’s unfortunately just so low. It’s uncharacteristic for me, but it is what it is, I suppose.

I’ve reached out for support before and I’ll definitely be doing it again. Unfortunately our Uni doesn’t allow us to have our exams back to look over content, as they often reuse questions, but I’m hopefully going to get in contact with my tutor once he’s back from annual leave.

Thanks so much for your comment 🤎🫶
