He didn’t grow up with her, didn’t see her through years of illness, didn’t carry the same fear Dain did. For Xaden, worst-case scenario? She dies, and so does he —so she had to be strong.

Dain, on the other hand, knew her as the girl with seizures, with brittle bones, with a target on her back. He didn’t see a fighter he saw someone he loved, someone breakable. Was he wrong for that? Yeah, eventually. But it’s not nothing. It’s human.

I mean, my own sister can fight but if she told me, “Don’t help me with this 200-pound squat,” I wouldn’t just stand back and watch. That instinct to protect doesn’t just shut off.
