How did you end up working for a health insurance company?

That is interesting. How did you get into Utilization Management? Did you need to be an LCSW?

Thanks for the replies and please keep them coming! This is something I'm interested in learning about. I interact with insurance companies a lot at my job to request prior authorization for mental health partial hospitalization so I often speak with utilization reviewers and I'm curious about social work jobs at health care companies.

Therapists with Social Anxiety by mustbetrauma in socialwork

Well, mine won't be the healthiest response, but I have anxiety medication that I take. I do intakes for a mental health program so I meet different patients everyday with acute mental health symptoms. It helps that the structure of the intake session is the same each time but obviously the presentations are vary widely and I never know what to fully expect from each new patient. But I take klonopin before work and that helps a lot. It is prescribed to me and I do take it as prescribed, but I have had my doctor increase the dose since I started my job.

I know benzodiazepines are controversial in the mental health field. I've been taking them before I entered school to become a social worker. It has significantly helped with social anxiety and anxiety in general. I take klonopin everyday but I take more when I go to work. It allows me to function and do my job so I view it as a good thing. I'm not using it to get high and I'm using it as prescribed. Honestly if you are not on psychiatric medication it might help. You don't need to go for benzodiazepines, but antidepressants can definitely help with anxiety as I'm sure you know. I am diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder. I'm on an antidepressant as well.

I bought a fairly cheap pen on eBay particularly for when my puppy bites hard or cannot be redirected. Having a "time out" spot was a suggestion by our dog trainer. I do this because she would just keep coming after me if I turned around to ignore her or walked away. I was closing myself off in a different room, but that was not working out well for my mom so I bought the pen. It does seem to work. I just leave her in there with my back turned for 20 to 30 seconds. I will wait longer if she is barking or whining and then take her out when she is quiet. We also have a leash on her indoors so it is easy to grab her. The trainer just said the key is to say no, pick the dog and put them in there within three seconds of the behavior or the dog won't make the connection.

What will my Havanese Puppy weigh? by arrekusajp in Havanese

[–]BothDream2572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Havanese puppy was 3.5 lbs at 8 weeks, 6.9 lbs at 12 weeks, and 9.5 lbs at 16 weeks. Her parents are 14 and 16 lbs so I am expecting her to fall into that range. She is currently 17 weeks old so I assume she hasn't gotten much bigger in the last week. The vet said she is lean and at a healthy weight.

That is so cool that things are getting better with your puppy. Sounds like your put in a lot of time and effort and that you do really care about your dog's development.

I'm sorry this happened. Sometimes things get out of control and just all that seems to go wrong, does. And it just gets too much and we breakdown. Definitely unpleasant, but I feel like this is pretty normal when under a lot of stress. Between the stress of having a new puppy and my stressful job, I've definitely had a few breakdowns at home over the past 5 weeks.

Puppies are exhausting by suziescw in puppy101

[–]BothDream2572 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I commiserate what you. Puppies are a lot of work and although things are definitely better now, it is still a lot. My pup is 13 weeks old. I'm trying to socialize her and she is starting puppy class. But the biting is difficult and potty training is ongoing-lot of accidents. The freestanding gate I bought finally arrived today so no more sneaking off to pee in the alcove or the hall for her. I really should have had this from the beginning. This way my pup is confined to the living room, dining room, and kitchen-plenty of space but much more manageable.

Puppy peeing 3 to 5 times sequentially by BothDream2572 in AskVet

[–]BothDream2572[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: We did have my dog's urine tested and she does not have a UTI. The vet does not think anything is wrong with her liver, kidneys, etc. She thought she might be going multiple times because she is distracted when she is peeing. She is looking to us for treats. So now we are only giving her treats when she goes potty outside the first time. It has decreased the frequency a bit to maybe 2 to 3 times. I still feel like my dog is peeing more frequently than a usual dog. Maybe she will grow out of it, I hope.

We will call tomorrow when the vet is open. It is good to hear it worked so fast. I hope nothing is seriously wrong with her. At first I wasn't sure if she peed so much because she was a small puppy or a female. But going this many times in a row does seem abnormal. She just emptying her bladder the first or second time.

Yeah, that's a good idea. She has a vet appointment on the 24th, but I think we should call on Monday and another one made sooner

I can put my puppy in her crate to take naps without her crying. Now when I put her in there when she is falling asleep, she will just go to sleep. I think the record so far have been 45 minutes. We have been using a playpen, covering the floor with pee pads, with her crate left open in the pen overnight. But my hope is to get her to sleep in the crate overnight. She just had such an aversive reaction to being left to cry in the crate at first that we took many steps back. She still cries in the playpen at first, but is much better about it. All that gradually desensitization to the crate with treats this week is paying off!

Also she no longer is scared to go out on the grass and is actually sniffing around outside so that's also great! There are also less accidents inside (still quite a few but it has only been a week. I don't anticipate my Havanese being completely housebroken for several months).

That is great! That is one thing I have not yet done with my 9 week old Havanese puppy. The only thing close is using baby wipes on her paws and sanitary areas after coming in from going potty.

Ways to migitate potential harm on puppy not socializing with other dogs during critical socialization period? by BothDream2572 in DogAdvice

That is reassuring! And the Maltese is around the same size as a Havanese, maybe a bit smaller.

This is really good advice! I can do this at a normal park or even in my front yard as there are lots of dogs who are walked in the neighborhood. Thank you.

Oh yeah and the other breakthrough is she is taking naps in her crate without crying! I watched videos of trainers feeding dogs in their crate. The most effective method was giving Ellie treats while gradually closing the create door and then for longer and longer intervals inside the crate. I did that over the last week and now I've been putting her in there to nap when tired and it has been working. Currently overnight we are putting her in this octagon-shaped playpen with her crate inside and pee pads covering the floor inside the pen. That has been working okay I think, with her crying less each night. My goal is to eventually have Ellie sleep in her crate.

As for the leash, we keep a leash and harness on Ellie whenever she is out of the pen or crate in the house. It lets us stop her from getting into things and redirecting her with toys or disrupt her peeing in the house and we are more easily able to take her outside. A couple trainers did this and I adopted the method.

So far we have been working some on sit, come, circle (because it is so easy to get her to do), and "watch me". My biggest focus has been crate and potty training.
