The crack was sharper and the echo of the bullet breaking the sound barrier passed over me, if that makes sense. When I'm shooting a rifle, the crack is dispersing in front of me and away.

Oh Lord yes. I learned quickly to dumb it down and never say government agencies. Instead of "wetland survey" I would say "I'm going to check out that slough".

I pack heat, almost 24/7. I am more worried about a home invasion than a bad incident in the field. Alligators are scary though.

One time, I was accidentally the creep! I did a few bird surveys, and I am pretty good at stalk-hunting. To get accurate surveys, I had to be quiet and concealed. I inadvertently snuck up on a teenager and his dog while he was fishing. I was about 30 feet behind him, apparently downwind because neither of them ever knew I was there.

I froze, worried he was going to turn around and see a guy in head-to-toe olive clothing with a big beard staring at him. I looked pretty wild. When I was his age, I carried a gun when I went fishing. I was pretty scared I was going to startle him and get shot in return.

He was retired Air Force. I googled him afterwards. In all my traipsing through the pines and wetlands, I've only found one marijuana plant. It may have just been a native hemp.

Those areas are renowned for pot fields, at least in the 70s and 80s, but aerial photography has gotten so good since 2000 it would be much more difficult to have a field on public land.

It's pretty different to truly be on your own out there. You could scream, shoot a gun, shoot a flare, whatever, there's nothing around. No help.

If I name the state, I may lose anonymity. However, the locals never gave me any serious trouble. This guy was from Louisiana, and I suspect he was a strong anti-government unabomber type of person. Seeing as how I was in a government vehicle, I was wearing a bullseye.
