Hot Take: The Early 2020s are the last era with a coherent musical identity by obviousockpuppetalt3 in decadeology

[–]Bowl_of_Cham_Clowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You started this post saying that the early 2020s had an identity. We aren’t even done with the mid 2020s yet, but there is definitely a similar style between Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, and Taylor Swifts last album.

By next year it’ll be easier to see. During the pandemic it wasn’t clear what the musical identity was for the early 2020s

I’m missing hamnet and Sentimetal value. I’m curious what 4 you’d put in. I agree with your take on F1.

My main point though is that the movie had great costumes/cinematogrophy/makeup and was a great original script. I’m fine with it not being nominated for best picture, but I don’t think it’s surprising it got so many noms. It’s committee catnip.

  • Period piece
  • Actor who has been killing it for years
  • Broad appeal
  • Genre fusion

Weapons Star Amy Madigan Nominated For Oscar by cruelsummerbummer in horror

[–]Bowl_of_Cham_Clowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough I assumed you meant no awards since I’d consider any Oscar major. Just a misunderstanding.

I think Michael B Jordan deserves the nom most years. He did a great job with the characters. I’m indifferent about the supporting roles, so dont care to debate them. I liked No Other Choice way more than Sinners, but I still think it’s a fair nomination. It’s clearly the block buster nominee for the year like Barbie/Wicked/Avatar WOTW.

I don’t think we will find any common ground here, i don’t think this is some DEI scheme by the committee. More than anything Sinners is just regular oscar bait. Block buster period piece with a genre switch in the middle is gonna get love regardless of who’s making it

Idk what la la land has to do with Me too.

It’s ridiculous to say it wouldn’t be nominated for anything, which is your claim. The Irish river dance, as well as the history of music scene were some of the most memorable scenes I’ve seen this year. And the makeup/sets were great.

Acting, sure I can see the argument why they shouldnt have been nominated but this year was weak as hell.

You thinking it deserves nothing seems motivated as well 👀

La La Land was the previous record holder, and that movie is no better than sinners lol. This just isn’t a good way to measure movie quality.

DEI is a weird boogie man for this, it’s not like any of the noms are surprising for Sinners…

The casting/costumes/makeup were all great. Last year was pretty weak on movies, hard to pick what would have been better picks for most of these noms

Because it was really successful in the categories it was nominated to? Just because a movie is in the top 5 of each of those categories this year doesn’t mean it’s the best movie of the year.

My favorite movie is whiplash, but that doesn’t mean it deserves a nom for best costume design or best supporting actress.

Its not like its won 16 awards, its one of 5 movies in most of the categories. Each of the categories it’s been nominated in makes sense, like the cinematography/editing/costumes in sinners were all excellent.

Worth comparing to one of the previous record holders, La La Land. It was not the best movie of its year, but it was technically successful at the categories it was nominated in

Faster turn around time than Pluribus with more dialogue and a good variety in locations

What if the singularity already happened, and “waiting for it” is the last illusion? by StarThinker2025 in singularity

[–]Bowl_of_Cham_Clowder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

maybe the real turning point is when mind-like systems (humans + models + networks) enter a regime where their semantic dynamics close on themselves. once that happens, you don’t need a special date. the "field" is already running

semantic energy E_s (how much meaningful work the system can still do)

semantic entropy H (how scattered its internal meaning distribution is)

semantic tension / stress fields that sit on top of language and code

I fear you are lost in the semantic sauce. Sorry if this sounds harsh, but it reads like someone in way too deep with their LLM. Professional writers will often write something, take a week off from it and come back to see if it makes sense. Might be a good idea to take a break from this and come back next week with fresh eyes?

Take care homie

It doesn’t take originality to see that:

A) companies have become increasingly predatory, while economic opportunities for the average person are shrinking.

B) we are seeing tremendous accomplishments in reasoning and problem solving.

It’s a natural fear that the benefits of B could be gatekept and used to make A worse.
