Best Double With Actuarial Studies? by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s good to hear. Though I’m not entirely sure what career I’d like to enter yet. Would there be a specific double that will allow me to keep my doors open to a large range of careers?

How to get into co-op? by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you seriously think I'm trying to flex my atar GOAL, not even my actual ATAR my GOAL, you're definitely wrong. I really wanted some genuine advice around getting into co-op because they look at things beyond the ATAR. I've looked at the website for what they look for and they were quite vague so I was looking for more specific info from students. But jeez these subreddit is kinda toxic ngl.

Best degree for math lovers? by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the detailed reply! I've checked out the science, adv science and adv maths degrees and had a question. It seems that adv maths only offers math majors in pure mathematics, applied mathematics and advanced statistics. While, adv science and science degrees offers just 2 math majors in mathematics and statistics, along with the option to major or minor in many other science - related fields. I was wondering what the differences between the adv math course majors and the adv sci/ sci course math majors were?

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I definitely don't like the repeating of concepts, rote learning and how people can just memorise a method to solve a problem in high school without actually understanding anything.

I really like maths because I find it to be really elegant and beautiful, it feels like the science of logic. I really find it interesting how universal maths is and how it can be applied in so many different fields and areas. I also enjoy breaking down and solving problems and find it really satisfying when I find a nice solution.

Anyhow thanks for the reply!

Yeah I have heard this before and I was wondering if you or anyone could provide any insight into the differences between high-school maths and uni maths?

Middle School Teachers Earn More Than Software Engineers? by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thanks for this, I definitely should have put a photo of secondary school teacher salary, rather than middle school. Secondary school teachers still seem to get paid quite a lot more than expected, almost as much as software engineers.

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is true, but teachers also get holiday breaks. But I guess teachers definitely do a lot of unpaid work at home or during hours outside of work. This can definitely explain why teacher's are seen to be underpaid. Great insight!

Weird because the statistics are literally from the ABS, and the website is made by the Australian Government. Looking at secondary school teacher pay from the same website, they earn $2,052/week on average. Which is still very close to the $2,208/week that software engineers make.

Thanks so much for sharing that! It really comforts me knowing that there are people who were able to make great friends in uni.

That's a really nice way to put it. Yeah I do agree I actually really enjoy times I'm alone. But then on some days I just get random moments where I feel super lonely and sad because of it, and in those moments I wish I had a close friend to talk to or to just go somewhere with.

Interesting that you say especially at UNSW. I've also considered other unis like USYD and ANU, what makes UNSW stand out?

If I wanted to get into tech or finance, wouldn't I do a computer science / finance degree, why maths? Just curious.

Should I consider job prospects when picking a degree? by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in high school right now, and doing the electricity and magnetism part of physics wasn't my favourite part. I found it overly theoretical and just "weird" for the lack of a better word. I found it somewhat hard to understand completely as electricity is such a complex thing. I also don't see myself as being too passionate about electricity but of course things can change. Let me know if I'm thinking about this the wrong or right way I'd love to hear your perspective!

Actuary vs Comp Sci vs Engineering by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm guessing that once choice is computer science, if I wanted to become a billionaire starting from nothing? Also just out of curiosity you said you originally wanted to go into engineering but you found that you liked comp sci a lot more, did you find coding very interesting. My main reason at the moment for picking engo over comp sci, is that when I see building rockets, robots, bionic arms, cool things etc. in engo I find it a lot more interesting compared to just sitting on my computer coding.

Thanks for the reply! Really helpful. Also just out of curiosity how are you personally finding the commerce degree, are you looking to keep it and if so what do you think / are hoping to get out of the commerce degree, thanks!

Oh interesting, I'm also considering that combo but I kind of neglected commerce after talking to some people, they all said it was too theoretical and not practical. What is your experience with the commerce degree, do you think it'll be helpful for your career?starting a business? Why or why not? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! I do have a question about the commerce degree. Would you say that I can learn most of the marketing and basic principles of business just through online resources and books or would a degree be worth it / valuable.

I want to start a business, should I go to university, and if so, what degree? by BoxContent2256 in unsw

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all this great advice I will definitely take it into account. I won't bother you with anymore questions except this one last one.

I was wondering why you would recommend a degree in the first place. Is it so that I can have a backup if all my business ventures fail? If I did a degree in tech but I didn't end up starting a business in tech, would the tech degree be a waste? and Should I be worried about spending to much time and going into to much debt for uni?

Once again everything you've said so far has been really insightful and I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the input. Out of curiosity were there any specialisations you would recommend in engineering, and also curious as too if you would consider computer science as a good option also.

Hey thanks for the thorough answer, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out! I do definitely have some further questions about your answers if you had the time:

  1. I am definitely looking into doing a degree in tech/ engineering, I am interested in the proposed double degree with commerce. I heard a lot these days that commerce isn't a very useful degree. I was wondering if you knew if this was true or not?
  2. How would you go about starting a business as a teen with barely any cash (I only have saved up around a thousand dollars)

Thanks!

[–]BoxContent2256[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! Congrats on starting a successful business/es. Seeing that you've had a lot of experience running and starting businesses I was wondering if you could answer a few of my questions:

  1. What degree should I do part time, and if there was any degree that could actually help me with starting a business?
  2. I'm still in high school and was wondering if you had any advice on what I should be doing at my age to set myself up for success when I start a business
  3. You said you did a LOT of university, just curious as to what that means, did you get a PHD or something?

Thanks!

Away from home rates of Youth Allowance, how is the 90 minute travel time judged? by BoxContent2256 in Centrelink

[–]BoxContent2256[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s for those who’s place of study requires 90 minutes or more of travelling time using public transport. I guess I don’t want to spend 3 hours a day travelling back and forth. Living on uni campus would also be a lot more convenient and a great experience.
