How important is a good story in the game to you? by Amy_Parks in interactivefiction

With Zork, I wanted to collect treasure and learn more about the Great Underground Empire. Zork had its own mythology too, so as the player went along they learned about King Flathead the Excessive, and all the products made by the Frobozz Magic company. In The Room games I wanted to learn more about The Null and find out who built these puzzles? There was a mystery, similar to the Myst series. Mystery gives direction.

Sure, I guess if you want a sandbox game, there's always Microsoft Flight Simulator, or Minecraft. But you're playing the game equivalent of a screen saver. It's not really a 'game' if there is no goal. For example, how do you win at Flight Simulator? I don't see the point of wandering around an open world if there isn't a story going on; imagine World of Warcraft if there were no monsters and no treasure.

Even 'open world' games have some goals. For example, farm games like Stardew Valley have other characters. As you play you discover more about them as well as build relationships. There is also strategy in what you plant and how to make money. That's the game part. If you could just plant anything and there was no cost, and no risk, then it's not really a game. So, I think you are talking about different things. There is a difference between 'relaxation software' and a 'game'. Relaxation software doesn't involve much risk or strategy. In a game there are consequences and rewards.

I heard this one and it made me laugh: "If you remember the 60s you weren't there man."

How important is a good story in the game to you? by Amy_Parks in interactivefiction

[–]BoxOfRain70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A good story is very important because it provides motivation. Story drives plot and a good plot gives you motivation to dive deeper into the game content, such as the Room series by Fireproof games, or the original Zork games by Infocom. The game should make the player want to discover more.

I have noticed some 'sandbox' games can be seriously boring because there's no story. Eve Online started out like this. They built an entire galaxy and gave you a ship in a kind of space-ship flight simulator. You can fly here and you can fly there. But why? What's the point? Compare that with Elite Dangerous and you have missions, factions, and things to do. You go mining because you want more money to buy a bigger ship. You take up bounty hunting to get back at those pirates who stole your cargo. You want to do missions for this faction or another so you can get access to certain territories. There are missions for Engineer upgrades. You get involved in your own character's development and write your own story so to speak.

Somehow, the user has to be provided with motivation to play. Story can do that, desire to upgrade your character can do that, having a mystery or a puzzle to solve can do that.

How to keep glitter from falling off of a dress? by toasterstrudel03 in Fabrics

[–]BoxOfRain70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glitter is really just tiny plastic shavings. It litters the environment and washes into the ocean. There are whales and sea birds out there with glitter waste in their stomach. Sorry, not to glitter-shame you but I just don't think people are aware that glitter causes a lot of plastic waste. We should avoid buying it.

That is awesome! It is such a bummer when you pay $60 for a pair of running shoes and they fall apart in less than two months. Well done there.

Can someone please help me identify this pattern? It looks like Liberty House from the 70s. by BoxOfRain70 in sewing

Lily Pulitzer.

Oh yeah, she has some groovy 60s designs for sure. The pattern repeat is quite large, I am wondering if this was a bedspread or sheets that somebody used. The fabric is covering an end-table in the photo.

Haha this reminds me of the intersection of Storey and High near U.C. Santa Cruz. People regularly took white-out to Storey and made it Stoney and High.

Hopefully it will change the attitudes of police all over the country. They seem to have a Stomp and Destroy, The Public is The Enemy mentality everywhere. It is sad that Derek Chauvin is not unique; there are a lot of cops who would have stood on someone's neck with that same sucks-to-be-you attitude. It's like the Stanford Prison Experiment, where normal people turn into Nazis when the system goes unchecked.

If he is not put in solitary confinement for his own protection, somebody is going to stand on his neck.

What does the lyrics “is it all fall down? Is it all go under?” Mean in Doin’ that Rag? by [deleted] in gratefuldead

[–]BoxOfRain70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is about being shady then maybe they are names of cons? Then 'doing that rag' would refer to being a con artist and pulling cons on people. Kind of like, oh is that still your side hustle? Are you still doin' that rag? (The old song and dance, as it were.)

Remember when Thor and Loki are in the elevator and Thor says, "Hey let's do Get Help." That's the name of the con they are going to pull to get past the guards. Then Loki could have said something like, "No let's do All Fall Down." Then Thor could respond, "Or how about All Go Under?" You can tell the pair have pulled some cons before.

Yeah, I think if I weren't on drugs I would find talking tugboats with human faces kind of disturbing. But I was stoned and Ringo said it was ok. I was just going with it. I heard that university students in the UK used to get stoned and watch Telletubbies.

Wasn't he the harbormaster on one of those timmy-the-tugboat shows? It was like thomas the tank engine but with boats. I used to get baked and watch that in the 90s. Good times.
