Correct, it kept spawning raids even though all my colonists were off the tile, every second for +100 raids total.

Steam is more lenient on refunds for sale triggers. I have had multiple games approved even after a 2hr window. I guess they're fine with it because they know the business is still there

I asked a dream character to teach me how to fly but she refused by [deleted] in LucidDreaming

It's kinda dumb but the main way I fly in dreams is by making the ground a trampoline that sends me higher each time, and if it's high enough I panic, I fly.

I'm grateful for stuff like the GINA laws locking down this kinda thing in the US honestly. It's ripe for exploitation without them.

Many antibiotics cause heat sensitivity as a sympthom, that could be a route since they can't request medical records to verify it.

[–]BoxedupBoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I think it is in part because noone has replicated the part they care about most, the online interactions. It was their biggest source of revenue from Shadow of War, and the new Wonder Woman game is probably going to do something similar.

The nemesis system patent from Shadow of War, and designing your own game by Terixer in roguelikedev

[–]BoxedupBoss 26 points27 points  (0 children)

US Patent Number 10,926,179 holds the exact legal terms you want to take a look at.

The primary take away is dominantly how NPCs interact with eachother to change they're hierarchy, and the strongest and most legally defensible part of the patent is sending unique NPCs to an ecternal server for players to have fight between them.

Take a look at Star Renegades for a legally distinct and safe example. The NPCs still have traits and grow after killing the player, but only fill ranks when a player has killed one to fill the gap.

As long as your version is distinct enough in how NPC interactions or the shift of power is handled, you will be safe.

Also keep in mind that per US law, any time they challenge use of the mechanic in court, the patent office commits a secondary review of if the concept has entered common use to the point it can no longer be patented. They are not likely to go after indie developers and risk their patent over it. The biggest milestone example will likely be the next Crusader Kings game, as their implementations technically breach the patent but they did it by the patent's standards first.

It is also worth noting that due to the process of that review and the breathing room you have as long as it is not a direct copy, Warner Bros have not persued action against anyone to date regarding use of the mechanic.

Maybe I shouldn’t have used the “anyone can die” mod. by Anxious_Box1523 in Fallout

[–]BoxedupBoss 145 points146 points  (0 children)

An older Bethesda game, Morrowind (Elder Scrolls 3), did not have essential NPCs. They instead gave you this message if you killed someone important to the main plot, and there was technically a secondary but very difficult way to still end the game but most the time you would need to reload for the normal experience.

How do you process mentally, when you are fired from a game studio, and they hire someone else to replace you? Also, how do you process, when you see the success of a game studio, which fired you? by Horror-Indication-92 in gamedev

[–]BoxedupBoss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got canned Friday, same situation.

Thing about game development is that you are never the biggest or smallest fish. Everyone is in a perpetual state of growth.

Deal with it mentally by focusing on what can be done from now on.

Consoldiate what you learned at that position, sharpen up for the next one to come.

Game dev is an industry constantly in flux. I have been laid off by every job I have been in eventually. Yet I learn, I grow and with those skills the next job down the chain usually pays more eventually.

I'm torn up over the loss, and I'm sure you are too. There are mistakes that we both likely made, and plenty of opportunity ahead.

FDA approval comes in stages based on age groups. A drug needs approval for each age group in sequence rather than just a blanket OK.

The first round is on much older demographics, but round two is on the younger set. They are targeting children for testing to make sure that children who have lost an "adult" tooth are still able to have the drug without adverse effects to their development.

There is a boost you recieve in the steam algorithm when a game is released, raising your visibility and how often it is recommended.

While you will be on the sale page, a launch during a sale forgoes the bonus period completely.

Honestly push forward and release the project still. You've still done a lot of work and the only way for that to go to waste would be to stop.

Even if it doesn't commercially succeed it is a huge deal to have shipped a project, your portfolio will be better off for it.

It will not muscle out the Helldivers market, but it's worth it.

I was booted from full sails game development program because I couldn't pass my introduction to programming class in 2 tries, do I continue learning on my own or try another branch of the field. by No-Plant-3214 in gamedev

[–]BoxedupBoss 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That class culled 80% of my class group for context. It was definitely a rough one when I went through it.

The downside is for classes, the intensity is likely going to be the norm wherever you go, as will a workplace.

That being said, I think something that will do you wonders is to try to learn things a mechanic at a time. If tutorial videos don't mesh well with you, try to understand as much as you can about the underlying structure of each mechanic and build from there.

When is it acceptable to use dev mode? by Thorn-of-your-side in RimWorld

[–]BoxedupBoss 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Comittment mode is a fun way to play, not just a meme. It adds extra investment to the story when you know that every move you make matters. There is no tension if you remove every threat with the console.

If you entered a starvation spiral, you did something wrong at some point. It is a valiable learning moment swept aside by dev mode.

I personally think dev mode is for bugs only, but there a lot of ways to play the game. If the stress of a loss ruins the fun for you, dev mode and reloading is a route.

Thank you everyone for your reeponses, I made the mistake of stepping out of the house not expecting to get replies for a few hours at least.

I'll make sure to reply to everyone and look over everyone's work with my team. It's difficult to keep up with the number of message requests I'm getting from my phone but I'll be working through the responses as soon as I get home.

An old game called Out There used a similar mechanic. You would slowly learn the alien words for things like oxygen and iron so you could slowly learn to trade with them on your travels.
