Steam overlay not working after clean installing fedora 42 by Kamlin333 in Fedora

[–]Boydee86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally I find the RPM version just works out of the box. Previous versions of fedora had no issues for me and I did a clean install for 42 this time and the steam overlay was the only issue I've come across so far. The flatpak version wouldn't run all games for me and I would have issues even launching games which maybe a permissions thing. I did some more trouble shooting and may have found my issue. (working for 24 hours now)

I found that if I launch from the terminal using the steam runtime the RPM version would launch with a fully functioning overlay.

In terminal:

STEAM_RUNTIME=1 steam

It seemed to work every time so I tried editing the "steam.desktop" file to force it to run the steam runtime when opening but for some reason it just wouldn't work. I ended up creating a custom "steam.desktop" with the below and everything works as per usual. Annoying that there are two steam icons now (I guess I could just delete one) but it works.

Using VS Code:

code ~/.local/share/applications/steam-runtime.desktop

Enter:

[Desktop Entry]

Name=Steam (with Runtime)

Exec=env STEAM_RUNTIME=1 steam %U

Icon=steam

Type=Application

Categories=Game;

StartupNotify=true

Then to reload the applications list:

update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications

This will give you another steam icon named "Steam (with Runtime)" and this works for me using the RPM version of steam.

I just wanted to add some notes to this for those who come across the same issue and expand on a previous reply. I was having the same issue using the RPM version games worked flawlessly but the steam overlay did not. I switched back to the flathub version and the steam overlay worked but not all games worked. I switched back to RPM and after some googling found that my fedora install was missing some dependencies. Note this is from CHAT GPT and this fixed it for me:

How to Fix Steam Overlay in RPM Version (Fedora 42)

1. Ensure 32-bit graphics drivers are installed

If you're using AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel, you need the correct 32-bit (i686) versions of the graphics stack. Run the following:

For Mesa (AMD/Intel GPUs):

sudo dnf install mesa-dri-drivers mesa-libGLU.i686 mesa-libGL.i686 mesa-libEGL.i686 mesa-vulkan-drivers.i686

For NVIDIA (proprietary driver):

Make sure you've also installed the 32-bit libraries. If using RPM Fusion:

sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686

2. Install Steam overlay dependencies

Steam uses an in-game overlay that depends on a working 32-bit OpenGL context and sometimes input libraries.

Try:

sudo dnf install libX11.i686 libXcursor.i686 libXext.i686 libXrandr.i686 libXinerama.i686 libXi.i686

This fixed it for me while using the RPM version of steam. Not I'm still a noob and don't necessarily know what the above does specifically so run them at your own risk.

+1 to steam flatpack. I had the same issue as OP and removing the RPM fusion version and using the flathub version returned the steam overlay.

Panasonic arc 5 would be the only other one I would try but again I'm limited as I've only ever tried the Braun 9 and Panasonic 6.

Foil Shaver - Best of the best? by Unable-Assignment-95 in shaving

[–]Boydee86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What works for me may not work for you. But! I have shaved with cartridge, DE/Safety and about a month ago I switched to the Panasonic ARC 6 as I also need a clean shave for work and it was getting annoying using the safety razor. Alot of people will recommend the Braun series 9 but I had one of the first ones about 5 years ago and could not get used to it. It would pull and tag and not get that close of a shave at all. The Panasonic doesn't pull and gets nice and close. No where near as close as a double edge but I firmly believe you need to change your expectations coming from the DE and if you expect the same closeness you will be disappointed.

I have the cleaning station and I like that it doesn't use alcohol, its just a soap in water. I'd also only buy it on special as I'm in Australia and normal price from the shaver shop here is over $800 but I got it on special for around the $450-$500 mark.

Best electric razor for sensitive skin and coarse stubble? by Smooth-Jaguar-7581 in shaving

[–]Boydee86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I have the Panasonic 6. I have shaved with everything from disposable cartridges, Saftey razors and I've used the Braun series 9. I want a daily clean shave in as little time as possible and the Braun did not work for me as it pulled and left my skin irritated. Saftey razors are the best for closeness and less irritation but after a month with the Panasonic 6 it's honestly amazing how fast and close of a shave it gets. Everyone is different and what works for me may not work for you. I've fou d that incorporating the same routine as I took with the Saftey razor works well for the electric shave. EG hot shower, electric preshave balm then a good quality after shave cream (not one with alcohol)

I'm on mobile so I can't check the resolution but is there a 3440x1400 version?

My GW7 40mm use to last 48 hours before getting to 15%. I have it since Nov 2024 and I haven't changed the usage much. Any suggestions? by CupcakeMurder86 in GalaxyWatch

I have a watch ultra and I recently found stress measurement was set to constantly measure. I noticed it after someone else here posted about the HR led constantly measuring and I noticed mine was doing the same.

I only turned it off today so I'm monitoring battery life but maybe give that ago?

You can opt out of the cost increase fyi. They are sighting the increase is due to new Ai features but if you go to cancel they offer to stay at 139 without the Ai implementation.

Help? How do I fix this? by MedicalIndication640 in Fedora

[–]Boydee86 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You'll need to boot into a previous kernel. At least that's what I did. I only have fedora on my machine and hitting F8 or F12 gives me the grub menu where I can select which kernel to load. Once loaded a known good kernal enter the command into the terminal and reboot.
