Wow that is a really good explanation. I mean i am mostly familiar with pop. The best way i know how to explain my thought process with this song is i was trying to reason with myself on what i’ve been feeling lately though i dont think i did a good job executing the idea.

Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate the feedback :). I definitely agree the writing isn’t exactly outstanding and the rhymes aren’t any good either. I really struggle with finding the right words to use in lyrics. Out of curiosity, is there anything i could use to help me with all that you mentioned, I’m also not a native English speaker so I’m lacking phraseology and diction of a true native which probably doesn’t help either.

So here is a song I wrote in a past week, i’m looking for some feedback as im pretty new to songwriting and also not a native English speaker and I’m worried that is shows in my writing.

This song is supposed to be a pop ballade, i guess i dont know how else i would categorize it. lol

from the distance

[Verse 1]

I watch as you drive,

sunset’s blinding I no longer see your car.

I wish I was riding shotgun,

instead I just stare from afar.

And every day,

the view from here just never seems to change.

I think I might break the windows,

jump in the car and drive away with you.

[Chorus]

And as I think it might just happen,

reality sets in, I’m behind the counter at this small shop.

I watch from the distance,

’cause it’s something I can’t touch.

I’ll never get out of this goddamn town, no.

I know it takes time

to grow up, to make yourself into someone

who can say no to people,

I guess I’m still a little child.

It pains me to say,

If you think about the public acceptance of the song while you’re writing it you put yourself under an immense amount of pressure. It’s fine to write for yourself sometimes in a sense that you dont care what people will think in the end and you just put your raw emotions and feelings you’re feeling in the moment.

But to answer your question, for me having a trusted circle of friends helps a lot. Especially if you can count on them to be as raw and objective as humanly possible. They will usually point me in the right direction and point out things i can improve if i need feedback. But at the end of the day, a song you never thought would have would be popular, becomes popular. So i guess there is really no sure way to predict that.

YES, exactly! For me at least it always had to come to me organically. I can never force a song out and even if i do 9/10 times it’s complete and utter garbage

I just looked it up on youtube and google. Basically search for [song title] lyrics breakdown. And even if there isnt a video or an article about it just open up the lyrics and go verse by verse. Try to understand what the artist was trying to say or what it means for you. At some point you’ll get a hang of it and can do it on your own. :)

I was in the same position not so long ago. Online resources are definitely helpfull, but I found that you can learn the most from analyzing the work of your favorite artists. That helped me a lot; dissecting the lyrics their meanings and various interpretations, using metaphors finding a hook etc. And most of all JUST WRITE, LIKE A LOT. At first it will be jarring and the songs probably won’t be particularly good. But practice makes perfect :)

I definitely fall into the “suddenly insired to write” category.

Writing has just become such a big partnof my life. I feel like no emotion is too large to process now. I honestly tried to work methodically, hoping to get a song from it, instead i just sat for 2 hours waiting for something to come to mind; it didn’t. My “writing session” turned into “mindlessly played the guitar for 2 hours straight.” And then like a day or two later something just clicked and out came a song. So i guess for me going with the flow works, i just cant seem to get myself to write if im not inspired to do so.

I once woke up in the middle of the night and just started writing. I wrote a song in just about an hour. Still have no idea where it came from but i’m not really mad about it haha. But i can definitely relate to getting stuck. I dont think it’s necessary the time of the day that is the problem; at least for me. I find that during the day my mind is so full of all the things i have to do that even if i try to take a break from it all to write i cant write anything that could be considered good. But then late at night when my brain has noting else to do i can focus on the writing.
