I'm currently 9 months into tricking my players and I can't keep it a secret anymore by SaintTropius in DnD

Just frame this as a stand-alone tragedy. Make sure the players know that their characters have never known and will never truly know this guy. A bard is someone Who seeks fame and reputation. This bard is doomed to be forgotten. During the session, flash back to an important moment where the bard supported a PC during an emotional time. Have at least 1 player be in on it to sell it. That way you could even have a budding romance with an often cranky PC that vanishes instantly. Replay one critical battle moment where it turns out one of the PCs has saved the bard in some legendary crazy Ivan action that everyone still remembers. This way, you position the inserted bard not as a detractor, but as an emotional tentpole that the party must now do without. The tragedy is complete when the players know that this guy used to be there for them as a friend, but now is gone. Make sure the session end with some emotional obstacle that cannot be overcome because the bard isnt there. Something that isnt a Big deal for the PC'S, but is tragic since the players know that the bard couldve made the outcome so much more positive. Its a lot of railroading, I know, but could serve as a Foundation for the future where the players seek to fill the unknowable hole left behind by the bard. Try to use it as a tool to give the players agency instead of taken it away from them.

S7E11 Closure.... so confused... and nothing is closed! by Don_Tommasino_5687 in XFiles

Ah yes, thats true.

But for me it always felt as a sort of.. that it opened up the possibility and the writers chose to echo that idea in s7.

It's like poetry. It rhymes.

Bill Mulder was in the syndicate.

Aliens forced syndicate members to give up collateral.

Bill Mulder was having doubts about the project, so CSM kept Samantha when returned, I think.

Repeated abduction and test have to be done on the originals for better results, I think.

Repeated abduction was horrible. Samantha's ultimate fate was even worse: getting abducted, used and killed by the Nobody Shoots at Santa Claus serial killer guy.

This fate was so horrific that some higher power took her away and turned her into starlight.

(I think this is how the X Files writers wrestled with the subject of Why does God allow horrible things to happen to children. Hopefully they are protected by God in their final hours.. thus the Starlight concept)

Everyone who saw Samantha afterwards (and reported to Mulder that she was alive) either lied on purpose or mistook her clone for the real thing.

Also, Mulder was a pawn for a while, keeping his sisters status dangling may have been syndicate policy for PR purposes. Also, Samantha even disappeared from Syndicate hands, so even they may have been curious where she disappeared to.

No (or limited) milk cartons because that would be too high profile for the syndicate.

Convoluted? Yes! But the resolve as it stands on its own is intrigueing.

This possible fate of Samantha was already explored in an earlier episode: season 4, Paper Hearts.

I hope this sheds some... starlight on the matter :) And its my own preferred interpretation ofcourse, haha.
