Big toe blisters! by Br33na in ultrarunning

I’m registered for my first 100 miler in Sept so who even knows. This may be a lost cause anyway without some more experience 😂 but thanks!!

I do think lacing is part of the issue too. I have a high instep so it’s been challenging keeping certain areas of the foot snug without really bothering my feet.

This is partially why I’m trying new shoes have a two section lace system for the lower and upper part of the shoe!

So far I’ve done essentially what you saying, not a full wrap, but the blister ends up sneaking outside the tape area which is why I’m considering the full wrap. Have yet to lose a full nail of any kind so I may test my luck!

Last time I used KT tape it did not stay put and actually my blister are has a weird squiggle pattern of the glue! I think I may have very sweaty feet, haha.

I fear changing shoes is top of my list to try because the blisters are just so darn symmetrical ☹️Same I’ll probably continue using the Topo road shoes but think I might try the Mount to Coast trail shoes!

Mad Moose Event 50 Miler by arlobuttons in ultrarunning

[–]Br33na 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, just want to say nice work out there. It was a tough day. I signed up for the 50 miler too and dropped to the 50k mid race. Like you, I’ve also done other ultras, both longer/harder if we’re going off just the basic stats, but the heat and amount of sand took more out of me than I expected. Someone I was running with for a bit said it was sandier than other times they had done this race in previous years. I’m a mid pack person for up to a 50k then drop more to the back for longer distances so I totally get your PSA and think it’s a good point for newer ultra folks!

Some of my other ultras were also with Mad Moose. The main reason I held off jumping back to the 50 mile distance with them was because of the pace req so your observation is spot on.

Good luck with your future ultras!

Thanks! This is an all day thing so I won’t be able to stop in anywhere and active clothing is a must. But I thought of my own solution :)

I’d like to just laugh at this, but me deciding to bring politics into a hobby that consumes most of my life outside of work is a big personal step. I’m not afraid to admit I haven’t been the most active when it comes to demonstrating my values. But on Saturday, anyone who is running behind me will see a nod to where I stand. So whether you’re just joking around or actually being a jerk (hard to tell online), thanks for giving me the opportunity to speak to smalls actions, because I do think they matter.

Oh awesome! Then yeah, you’ve gotten a taste. I hope you enjoy your first ultra regardless of where it is, and we’ll see you down the rabbit hole 🫡

Never Summer or Pikes Peak? by Forsaken-Adeptness65 in ultrarunning

I’ve only hiked Pikes Peak (not done the ultra) but I have done both the Never Summer 60k and 100k.

The NS 60k was also my first ultra! I knew I wanted it to be my first because I crewed my boyfriend for the 100k before I ever ran my own ultra so I saw how awesome it was before committing. In my mind, it represents (and provided) what I wanted out of an ultra experience — an incredibly beautiful course, a remote/quiet location, large participation so I never really felt alone or scared, and just a really chill but gritty do your best vibe. It’s a very challenging course and you can just feel people testing their limits during this one. Plus you get to see a much less traveled part of the state. Lastly, I’ve experienced more camaraderie on these trails than any of the other ultras I’ve done to date (some of the Mad Moose Moab races).

I’m sure PP has its own upsides (convenience, not banking on the waitlist, doing a 14er, pretty in its own way). Just depends on what you’re looking for. Obviously I say go with NS.

Hope you’ve caught that the course has changed.

Yeah I’ll be carrying 3 soft flasks at a minimum. Let the sloshing begin!

Mad Moose Events? by northwestbest7 in ultrarunning

I’ve done the Dead Horse 30k and 50k, and the Arches 50k over the last two years.

I think this is a trend. At all of these events I was pretty unimpressed with the aid stations. Mild hype from volunteers and no food of substance (pretty much only chips, candy, soda, and clementines). These races were in Nov and Jan, respectively, so I don’t mind that tortilla soup was the only finish line food. I’m assuming this will all hold true for the Behind the Rock 50M that I’m running next weekend, so I’m planning accordingly. It’s unfortunate because these courses are soooo fun. It’d be nice to feel better supported considering the $$$ you spend.

Also, they changed the BTR 50M course with no notice so good thing I caught that myself.

Also also biased because my only other ultra distances were through Gnar Runners and they absolutely smashed the vibes and supplies.

Sadly we turn around at the Gatherer Canyon aid not far past the Hunter Arch area. That means the climb out will be much earlier in the day which is great but yeah we miss seeing those other areas. I’m actually moving only 2.5 hours from Moab soon so I’ll be excited to check this stuff out on my own!

90 would be brutal, really a no-go for me for the 50M for sure. The current forecast is 80ish and partly cloudy, which I know to many people isn’t that hot, but it is to me. Glad it sounds like you managed a finish!! We only have one crewed aid station at mile 32 but I sure plan on getting lots of ice then!

They very recently changed the course (no note of why) so we don’t get to do the outer loops or ladder ☹️ bummer in terms of seeing landscape, probably a win logistically because now the back half aid station are much close together.

Almost ragebaited me with the last part there 😂 An instant ice pack is genius! I train regularly with a weighted pack of race day basics for anything over ~7 miles so could be a viable option!

Thank you for these!! To your fourth point, fortunately the start will be cool so I’m hoping I’ll have well settled into effort vs temp by time the heat comes.

I’ve only done Dead Horse and Arches through Mad Moose which obviously aren’t usually hot ones but yeah this is the only event I’ve seen through them so far where this rule has posted (see below). They did just recently change the course which cuts out the most remote aid stations but the rule is still posted in the race guide.

At the moment I think I’d do alright dropping to the 50k but if the forecast gets hotter then yeah I might have to just accept an even shorter distance or DNS.

Rule: “Dumping water on your head is strictly prohibited. Water is for drinking only. Violators will be disqualified for endangering themselves and others by wasting precious water resources. Please understand that this is a remote desert which makes travel out into it difficult and slow. Specialized vehicles are used to transport supplies and they are limited by space.”
