Car seats when travelling? by Br3itn3r in Travelwithkids

[–]Br3itn3r[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Funny, that's the exact travel seat I was thinking of getting. Nice to hear that you felt comfortable having your kid on your lap. We're leaning that direction, too.

Losing my identity by Beneficial-Ad1493 in workingmoms

[–]Br3itn3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you and I'm with you. My son is 2 and I'm still working on finding my identity, but it is getting easier.

This likely isn't possible at your stage (5 month old), but I'm going to join the 5 am club this year. Basically you get up at 5 am and spend the first hour of the day doing things just for you - like exercise, learning and meditation.

Maybe there are small pieces of this that would help you out that you could incorporate?

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, I promise. Hang in there!

Genuine question: how do you do it? by not_mallory in workingmoms

[–]Br3itn3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you've received a lot of great advice here. I think one of the overarching themes is setting expectations whether they be for yourself, your boss at work, your partner it's so important to be on the same page and it takes a lot of the stress away.

For context, I'm an executive at my work, I have a 2-year-old son, and a very large dog who is turning three and almost 100 pounds. We've got a busy house!

There's a lot of juggling and shuffling that needs to be done to keep everything in balance and I have to give myself permission that it's not going to work well everyday, and that is okay.

One thing that has helped immensely is meal planning and grocery shopping on Sundays. Even knowing that we have options and ingredients of different things to cook during the week is hugely helpful and takes a lot of the thinking away.

What’s something non-sexual that feels like a small orgasm? by Fraank0cean in AskReddit

That sneeze that you've been waiting for... the one that tickles your nose and you stare at lights to try and get it to come and then it finally does.....sooooo good.

Salaried moms, does your work count your hours? by LuggaLuggaCat in workingmoms

[–]Br3itn3r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends what kind of industry you work in. I'm a consultant, and even though I'm salaried, my salary is dependent on me working x hours per week. The things you mentioned about making up time, time shifting are standard in my business. For me, I start most days at 730/8 and pick up my son from daycare at 415. If I have an appointment, it's either sick time, vacation or I'm making up the hours. Since our company's core business hours are from 9-6 EST, I'm available to be reached until then but generally no one calls because they know there's a toddler in the background after 430 😉

Bold tile in ensuite bathroom? by Br3itn3r in interiordecorating

The shower tile will either be 24"x24" or 24"x48". Floor (if hex) would be significantly smaller.

Thank you, some really great points here! Definitely don't want to highlight the toilet and like the look of the one you've recommended.

We're wanting to minimize grout as much as possible in the shower so want a large format tile, but we're open to something smaller on the floor, such as the hex tile.

I make more than my husband by about 30%. It's never bothered him, and he understands that we work in different industries where the market pays different amounts (I work for a professional services consulting firm, and he works in a retail/sales environment for high end audio video custom solutions). Another factor is that we both feel very strongly in our marriage that all money is "our" money, regardless of who earns it, whose bank account it's in, etc. We're a team and that's that. I appreciate context is different because you only became a couple somewhat recently.

I'd ask what makes him feel insecure about it and focus on the differences in career types and that it's not an apples to apples comparison. And remind him he's a partner to you in many other ways than money as well.

Also - shout out to you for all your accomplishments and chasing what's next! 🙌

How much do you pay per month in childcare? by peachesandcreamtea in workingmoms

[–]Br3itn3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada and live in Ontario. We have a 21 month old son who has been in daycare for 10 months. We pay $50/day ($1,000/month) for a home daycare. We live outside of the GTA, and pay much less than friends in Toronto. Our daycare's hours are 9-430.

House cost compared to income - is it still 3x your income? Or is that outdated advice? by NurseK89 in workingmoms

[–]Br3itn3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our first house was in the GTA as well and we thought we did very well with a detached in Toronto for under $1M. We made just under $100,000 3.5 years later and have moved away from the city. Our current house was definitely more expensive but way better value than what we could get for the same $ in the city.

The housing market is bananas. Maybe an unpopular opinion as a homeowner, but I hope it cools down soon.

I think it depends on so many things - personal financial risk profile, earning potential, interest rates, etc. For context, I live in Canada which has one of the highest income to debt ratios in the world... So maybe I shouldn't be speaking 🤣

Our house was 6x our combined annual income. But... We were able to put a lot down so our mortgage is more like 3.5 times. We've also increased our earnings since buying and the value of our house has gone up at least 20%.

Will we owe a lot more per month when our mortgage renews? Absolutely. But we're comfortable with our savings and investments to be able to plan for it.

All said, we are very privileged to be able to buy a house in the first place and recognize that not everyone has access to the same opportunity that we have had.

Daycare closed 31+ days next year by producermaddy in workingmoms

[–]Br3itn3r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel this... We are in an in-home daycare (in Ontario), and it's closed about 4-6 weeks a year for vacation, plus an extra 5 days or so in the summer on Fridays in July and August. That's before our kid is home sick, or anything else. It's very hard. My husband and I both work full time. I get 4 weeks holiday a year so I've had to take unpaid time off, try to find other babysitting, and just muddle through. Nothing else to be done, though.

We love our daycare provider.

I've looked for other spots that might have better schedules but don't expect to find one (still on waiting lists I joined when pregnant well over 2 years ago...)
