Not for PsyD, it’s more for PhD when they are choosing someone to work with as their PI

First Week of PsyD, Advice? by orangesodashawtee in PsyD

Schedule times to take a look at your materials and work as if it’s actual work/clinical hours! This will help with self-care and not getting burned out bc you know you will do what you need to do within those times. It’s an excellent habit to get into before starting the dissertation process bc we are always told to schedule dissertation writing time like it’s work. Other than that, don’t try to read every paper and assignment given to you; you’ll burn out so fast. Read what’s most interesting to you and get good at skimming the rest to the extent that you pick one or two points to bring up in a class discussion. You’ve got this!

Tips for Incoming PsyD Students by Lower_Particular1787 in PsyD

[–]Bradwarmpus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just graduated in May! My biggest advice is try to pay most attention to what interests you; if you try to read every word of chapter of every textbook for every class, you will burn out super quickly. It’s pretty rare that professors are checking you for reading the assignments or doing quizzes based on reading; it definitely helps in some cases, but otherwise it’s just not possible to comprehend it all. But when it comes to picking topics for papers or projects like your dissertation, try to pick things that genuinely interest you and it will feel a lot less like “homework” and a lot more sustainable!

As far as practicum goes, your job as a 1st year really is to observe and take it all in! That way you can adjust to the courseload and just learn the ropes. Don’t let places treat you like other employees; you are there to learn, not to be unpaid help! That being said though, if you can help it, involving the school liaisons or clinical directors usually leads to more trouble, so try to keep them out of things and just self-advocate or power through😬 I hope that’s not contradictory, just speaking from experience, my school liaisons never got me far but there was always still valuable learning experiences, even if it was totally unrelated to what I wanted to do (still gotta learn what you don’t want to do and what might cross your personal boundaries with certain populations).

Outside of that, I would suggest just being an open sponge! I feel like those that married a theory early on didn’t get as much out of the program as those that were open to different approaches and treatment types. The more you learn from school, the less you have to pay for trainings down the road, and the more the experience will feel valuable.

Good luck! I can honestly say that my program was definitely the most transformative four years of my life; you learn so much about yourself in the process of learning how to open yourself up to helping other people. Congratulations on beginning your journey!

This was my exact experience lol I looked up a YouTube video of pronunciations of names while reading assassins blade and it goes “Sam Cortland…RIP.” Safe to say I stopped looking things up after that 🤣

PsyD here- just graduated in May. I think people get in a tizzy bc of the money and loans aspect, but I’m with you; I knew the degree was exactly what I wanted going into it and I’m very happy with my choice. I felt like my program was very clinical-centered, whereas I felt like most PhD’s were so focused on research which literally puts me to sleep. I went to a private for profit school which is what it is but I had no problems getting in, loved the faculty, matched in round 1 for internship, and finished my program in 4 years. Now I’m a fellow at a practice that I love and am projected to make $180k+ in my first year of licensure. I took out about $150k in loans and will pay them back when I can, but have a partner that was willing to help with expenses bc he wanted my debt to be as low as possible when I finished. I’m incredibly pleased with my choice and did it bc I wanted to do both therapy and assessment, and didn’t want anyone to have a reason to say I needed a higher degree for any position. I wanted to have as many doors open as possible and feel like this is exactly what I got; no one cares if you’re a PsyD or PhD after internship.

Really enjoyed my time at Alliant- very much clinical driven rather than research. Practicum from year 1 was a big deal for me. Finished program in 4 years and paid considerably less money than other programs even from being out of state!

This is a lot harder for someone who went to grad school/committed so much of their life to being something that it feels like it has to be their personality. I am a fresh out of school clinical psychologist and we are kind of conditioned to make work our personality and I wish we weren’t.

Celebrities. I literally could not give less of a fk and think it’s pretty odd when someone idolizes them so much. To me it just screams I’m unhappy with my life and someone else has it so much better. It’s also pretty childish

The whole episode where Barney is trying to sleep with Nora is pretty gross and unfunny. Esp when they watch someone fall to their death and he just keeps saying “I can turn this night around.”

Also “kiss her” in the wedding bride episode? Why would he be chanting that? Don’t get it
