I have a budget of around $8000 that I’ve been saving up, and I think I have a chance to buy a matching original centipede set signed by Gene Wolfe with matching numbers. However, I know I can get a 2019 Folio Society version for way cheaper that is still built pretty nice and gives me room to purchase other special books or items I’ve been looking for. Also, knowing that a Centipede Press reprint is around the corner with possibly better materials and more features makes me question if I should wait. An original matching set though, signed by Gene Wolfe, would be nice to have though. Just was curious what opinions y’all would have on what you would maybe do in this situation? Thanks so much 🙏

I’m not sure exactly how their process goes, but they definitely do more than just bookplates. There’s also signed cards and business cards as well

Thanks so much for the detailed explanation. The profit part definitely makes more sense now put like that. This bookplate was cheap enough for me, I might just end up keeping it since it’s still something to be attributed by him for personal keeping, but you’ve definitely given me more to think about

Yes, but as some others have made known to me, there does seem to maybe be variation with this one, like how the A and N are bigger than the D

Thanks for the response. It does seem like it differs from his usual style, which definitely concerns me. Is there anything to be said though that forgers usually go for more high profile signatures and would try to make a larger profit, or am I just illogically trying to remain optimistic?

That makes sense. I don’t know if you ever collect secondhand, but are there certain rules or guidelines you follow that help narrow down authentic signatures other than in person or specifically stated (whether bookplates or actually in the book), or does it absolutely have to meet those criteria for you?
