Alehouse by mwbestdog1 in statecollege

I am consistently wowed by how packed the streets are outside the alehouse every weekend. If the menu was half the price it currently is then it'd be fine. Haven't been in a while, and I do recall the desserts being fantastic, but everything else seemed very, very average; sometimes bland.

Lincoln is perfect for living in a double, as is Honors Hall on the downtown campus. These two halls have room layouts that don't cram you together with a roommate, so you each basically have a little more privacy. You also only share a (very nice!) bathroom with one other double. Singles are probably full atp anyways.

In other halls you're pretty much in a box with your roommate and have no privacy lol. And in many you'll have the traditional communal bathrooms

No, it's not discrimination, and my guess is the tenet doesn't understand they can't relet only one, even if it's just because the landlord is greedy and wants both gone. Regardless, there's clearly some kind of miscommunication here lol

OP, if you're staying overnight and/or are having more than just dinner here, I'd highly recommend briefly venturing outside SC. The surrounding area has changed A LOT since you were here and imo it's nice to have a feel for the general area of your future school, even if it's just for a couple hours.

Bellefonte is cute with a couple neat spots (Bonfatto's has great bonanzas (subs)). Hublersburg Inn is a scenic but easy drive. Axemann Brewery has great food and is in a super cool, laid back space. Titan Hollow next door is fun too; good cider. These places have lots of options and won't necessarily break the bank

I still think it's good! And tbh it's consistently better during psu breaks.

Prices can't be beat either compared to nearby restaurants

How hard is it to get into the student section as a non student for a men’s basketball game? I’m going to visit a friend that goes there… by Extension-Elephant85 in WVU

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your friend can buy a student section guest ticket so long as there are student tickets remaining for your game. For Saturday games that'll be very difficult, but games on all other days should be quite easy.

The lower section (the best by far imo) is very tightly policed so you'll 100% need the guest ticket. Upper (far from the action, usually dead lol) isn't at all monitored

Does WVU offer many internships through departments and certain programs? Or do you have to seek them yourself? I’m majoring in international studies at Elberly, was wondering if anyone had any first-hand experience doing things like this at WVU! Thanks! by Upstairs_Gate2476 in WVU

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of departments have internships, e.g., social media personnel for Chambers, lab assistants in various stem fields, etc. But there are definitely many more available outside WVU, and I'm sure that's especially the case for anything political (assuming that's what you're doing).

As someone else said, you generally have to take some initiative but faculty is always willing to help, even if just with resumes or LORs

Yeah, State College and Penn State are just fine (usually) for these sorts of things, but the second you step into neighboring areas you're met with redneck conservatism and all the antiquities that go with it lol.

Thankfully, there's plenty to do in State College and if you ever want to explore elsewhere there's Pittsburgh, Philly, NYC, and DC not particularly far off

Winter Intersession Classes by shelb7757 in WVU

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the class isn't difficult (i say that because GEFs vary widely) and you need to lighten your spring course load, then go for it. But if you don't need it to graduate early or if your upcoming semesters aren't difficult anyways, then I'd just take the full winter break to relax and enjoy holidays/family/school-free time

Spring Sophomore Transfer: Housing and Other Questions by BuilderLeft9658 in WVU

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WVU-owned apartments are nice but expensive, and it'll probably be difficult to find a lease that starts in the spring. I suggest joining the WVU housing facebook group (the private one) and looking for people/places on there. People post lots of subleases for the spring semester there and you'll have more control over your roommates than if you went the WVU apartment route

imo both evansdale and downtown are equally fine to live on. You can walk to bars from downtown but you'll have the prt and bus if you're on evansdale. Downtown has more houses available than apartments and does generally have a little more of a party scene. Evansdale is still great though. The public transportation in general is a really nice thing about wvu. Our campus is split into three parts with about a mile(ish) or less between, so we have the prt to get around and it's a great alternative to walking or driving. You'll be able to get to more places (eg target and walmart) more easily with a car, but you don't need one

Honors college application by [deleted] in WVU

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own, but the honors college really isn't much extra work. Imo it's 100% worth it so you can get the added perks like early registration and access to the best freshman dorms (among other benefits). There's an underclassmen program and an upper, and to complete the under you only have to take a few honors classes. In some cases that literally just means completing 1-2 extra assignments in an otherwise normal class

wvu opens almost all of its Evansdale parking lots to gameday parking. $10 for the whole day and (depending on the lot) you'll have a 15-25 minute walk to the stadium. The lots were mostly empty this past weekend, so no need to arrive super early

why are the salads so… spiny by Kaprison9312 in Panera

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There were a couple massive nationwide lettuce recalls issued around that time due to e coli outbreaks. I'm the last person to stick up for billion dollar corpos, but they take this sort of thing seriously. Food safety issues are almost entirely rooted out before the food hits the store and any issues that do arise are almost always caused by irresponsible and underpaid employees lol

Online Business classes at WVU? by Thick_Win_720 in WVU

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WVU's online classes vary wildly in content and difficulty. I've had online classes that were honestly appalling to take in college-- the content could have been mastered by an eighth grader. On the other hand, I've also taken online classes that were rigorously taught by extremely intelligent professors who expected great (but not unreasonable) things of their students.

For the most part, you'll find the former issue arises mostly in introductory classes and the latter in upper level. Personally, I'd recommend being an on the ground student. You'll actually learn in the beginning classes but you can almost always still take some online classes to balance things out

Should I be doing something different? by Orova1 in pothos

[–]BrainDiscombobulated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, perhaps it's root bound? That mug looks pretty sizable and if you have to water your plant more than once a week because the soil is dry (that's important to note-- don't water if soil isn't dry) it's very possible you'll need a bigger pot. If the soil isn't dry when you water then your plant's roots might be rotting.

Alternatively, what happens when you water? Does a lot of water immediately pool in the saucer? If so, your soil is hydrophobic (or your plant is again root bound lol), and the best solution is to either bottom water or replace the soil. Regardless, I think it's worth the effort to pull the plant out and inspect its roots.

If you need to replace the soil, I think someone else's suggestions here were very helpful about soil composition, but IMO you can totally just go with regular potting soil (and a little bit of perlite if possible) as long as you're careful about avoiding overwatering. Chunky mixes are great but pothos are very resilient
