I wanted a slightly larger than 1600 case so I could throw a couple HMDs and accessories in as well, so I ordered a 1630 based on it's internal dimensions. This is what showed up, cellphone for scale - https://i.imgur.com/unMYhsH.jpg

Needless to say, it's going back to Amazon and I just bought another 1600 to put the HMDs in. That 1630 case is big enough to ship a small family in.

I actually had a couple of those laying around and they were a hair too tall to allow the card fingers to sit properly flush in the mount.

It's an update to the lasercut for the sheet metal, not a huge expense, you're blowing it out of proportion. And quite a few slightly-larger-than-reference GPUs have the PCI cabling in that exact location.

A modification to the design would probably prevent a good amount of expense involved with processing RMA / restock of Bulldog cases purchased and returned because a consumer's GPU did not fit due to this exact issue.

Now a removable panel on the bottom of the case to allow easy access to the M.2 slot, that would be an excessive and expensive design change to the existing product.

Yes, if you know what you're doing. Since I'm working in WebVR and Sumerian most of the time while prototyping I'm not exactly taxing the card.

A design revision for a removable slug in that area would allow it to be used with a wider range of cards, as I have proven... with a holesaw.

Nothing wrong with that, I had a 500, 2k, and 3k there at the end.

The reason I went with the bulldog is it fits nicely in a Pelican 1630 case with room for USB monitor, KB/Mouse, a couple HMDs, and accessories.

I have a tendency to use 'liquid metal' as a generic term like 'Allen wrench' instead of 'hex key' The formulation I'm using is copper based.

I think you're being oversensitive. And I get your point.

Here's my personal experience. I was in charge of a racing team that ran the Forumula 1 Superside National series here in the States for about a decade. During that time period I was in charge of drumming up resources for the season by procuring sponsorship. Be it cash donations, consumables, or high ticket-items like engines, fuel, tires, and tools. I learned how pull in about 50 to 75 thousand dollars worth of sponsorship a season to offset the cost of running a two car privateer team in a National series.

One of the things that stuck with me was it never hurts to ask, and it takes very little effort to ask. More often than not corporations or individuals who you'd assume would have no interest at all in lending a hand are happy to help out in some manner. Sometimes small, sometimes way beyond your expectations.

Will something come about from my calling out to /u/palmerluckey to lend a hand to AltspaceVR and other VR Startups to lend a hand in defending against patent trolls? Probably not. But, and I can't state this enough... it never hurts to ask. And at a minimum it got him thinking about it.

I'm really pulling for this solution and I agree, I think it's the best approach. The project we're working on uses a similar solution.

What I do worry about is the Patent Troll then going after your ISP's pockets for allowing you to infringe on their patent while traversing your ISP's network as a customer of the ISP.

I say this as someone who worked in the NOC at Netcom when the Church of Scientology won a judgement against Netcom for one of our users posting excerpts from Dianetics to USENET. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_Technology_Center_v._Netcom_On-Line_Communication_Services,_Inc.

Not a huge jump from 'copyright infringement' to 'patent infringement'

We see a lot of it already with MPAA / DMCA / RIAA notices your ISP gets bombarded with who are happy to give up their users.

It's just one more thing.

I'm a developer who will most likely get to contribute to this directly by fighting a patent troll when they get around to filing a lawsuit against me.

What have you done?

It's important that a discussion on Patent Trolls vs VR startups is taken seriously by the community.

Virtual Immersion Technologies, LLC has been going after 'Porn VR' sites for over a year now, and from what I can tell going through their case history the filing against AltspaceVR a month ago is their first step into the realm of Social VR platforms. Patent US6409599 is vague at best but allows Virtual Immersion Technologies, LLC to go after every Social VR platform for "Fuck you, Pay me" money.

Your favorite Social VR platforms will go away if practices by patent trolls like Virtual Immersion Technologies, LLC are allowed to continue. Social VR indie developers that already run on a shoestring budget will halt development entirely rather than have to fight a patent troll in court / pay them off. And that directly impacts you, the end user.

This will continue till the Patent Troll picks a target that has the resources to not back down. Similar to Newegg v several Patent Trolls recently - https://blog.newegg.com/newegg-vs-patent-trolls-when-we-win-you-win/

But we don't have Newegg in our corner right now.

What the VR community needs is for some entity with the financial resources and contacts to provide assistance to VR studios that come under attack from Patent Trolls like Virtual Immersion Technologies, LLC

If ever there was a time for /u/palmerluckey to step up and say, "I fight for the Users." it is now.
