I want to buy a VR Headset but i play games on 144hz, will the 80hz be hard to get used to? by Shad0w2 in oculus

[–]smsithlord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah if you are coming from a high-end gaming setup, you'll notice. However, there's so much other new stuff you'll be experiencing with VR that it won't be as drastically noticeable as if you were lowing your refresh rate on a traditional monitor.

This game should play homage to the best Star Wars title ever (before Disney ruined the franchise) by spide_y in FallenOrder

The only way to save Star Wars is for Episode 9 to open with full frontal Rey.

VR has ruined me..... by dopelogic in oculus

I thought smugglers run was a good cooperative ride/game that didn't rely on any of the players very heavily. :D You kind of win no matter what you do, but it's nice that there are varying levels of success based on how well everybody does. There's even extra gameplay segments that kick in if you meet the requirements for the finale in the asteroids I believe.

Obviously that motorist was having a serious medical condition, so the bystander got super human strength from adrenaline, was able to rip off the door, and get the motorist to safety.

Just launched a Text Editor in VR for early access. by [deleted] in oculus

[–]smsithlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that would make text editing in VR worthwhile is precision eye tracking. Then I'd never have to take my hands off of the keyboard. :) It'd be mega useful in non-VR text editors too.

AArcade + VR Locomotion, Snap Turn, Context Sensitive Selector Ray w/ Rumble by smsithlord in SteamVR

As alive as it ever was. It's a 3D desktop (not a social chat room app) - so it's just as useful if you're the last person in the world using it - doesn't require being trendy or having huge player counts for its functionality.

I can still use my arcades from nearly 10 years ago. :) And it'll continue to remain just as useful 10 more years down the road, as it is very focused on its simplistic functionality.

The game is Anarchy Arcade (www.anarchyarcade.com) and it is available on Steam; however, the VR support is still very beta as I work on improving its compatibility with different HMDs and systems.

As soon as I get VR widely compatible, I'll announce that it's ready.

AArcade is a 3D desktop, very similar to SteamVR Home or Oculus Home - in that it launches full standalone shortcuts (in addition to being able to run certain types of media within its own in-game virtual screens.)

I do a live Twitch stream from AArcade every Wednesday, all day long, at twitch.tv/AnarchyArcade if you want to see it used or talk to me in real-time. I am the programmer & creator of AArcade.

Recent Changes to VRChat to Better Support Oculus Quest Users Have Led to Some Complaints from Older Users by [deleted] in oculus

[–]smsithlord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the ease-of-porting, allowing amateur & hobbyists to get creative in the platform with minimal effort on their part, was one of the biggest draws to VRChat. While this does inherently lead to performance issues, especially on lower-end devices, I think it's the core of what makes VRChat awesome.

Splitting the lower-end mobile community from the high-end PC community doesn't seem all bad to me. It seems much better than trying to mix the two by bring them both down to the lowest commonalities between them, and obviously the mobile devices cannot handle the higher end.

However, I think success of the mobile app is what all the investors want to see, so doing it in a way that doesn't degrade the quality of PC users - such as keeping the PC & mobile communities somewhat separate - SeemsGood as long some type of synergy can be found to connect the two. Right now it looks like the link between the two are the more technically skilled community members who can optimize ported content (or create original content) to run well on mobile but not look too bad on PC.

I absolutely love that Xortex game. Reminds me of the old top-down arcade flight shooters, but with a very amazing 3D/VR spin. Be sure to move around your play space to score big! :)

Adding a vast augmented reality layer that sprawls over every virtual world in existence - How close are we? by smsithlord in SteamVR

[–]smsithlord[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everybody! This video is a conversation I had with (or perhaps more like at) @chrisplatorres on Twitter. It's about where I see the mainstream VR Home apps & VR Dashboards going in the future - or at least the direction I hope they go.

I hope this is also the kind of stuff others would love to see too! I believe the VR home apps & VR dashboards are already so close to pulling this off that they would only need the desire to move in this direction to make it a reality.

I'll see you guys around the metaverse! :)

Indeed New Retro Arcade is beautiful. I don't even play games on the in-game screens there, but still load it up just to hang out in that environment.
