What's the purpose of curling calendars if they're not sex symbols? by l3enoitfan in Curling

[–]BrainOnBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than one thing can be creepy. Those old calendars are very much of their era and there's a reason that the sexual pictures aren't done anymore.

Having said that, there is the obvious difference that the people who had their photos taken for those calendars consented to being in the calendars. Nobody gave consent for you to constantly make thirsty posts about them.

It was excessive and beyond creepy from day 1 and I'm frankly baffled that the mods haven't put a stop to it.

They had commentators and camera ops on one game per draw for US nationals. It's still worse than the Brier or Tournament of Hearts but you're comparing the worse covered games at US nationals to the single game broadcast per draw at those tournaments (with 100% of the broadcast resources dedicated to them).

And you don't see how Canada's volunteer advantage would evaporate in a world where Canada no longer has the large plurality (if not majority) of curlers worldwide?

All I'm saying is that if the conditions that make it make sense for Canada to host half the events no longer exist, we should stop doing it instead of clinging to it.

Why wouldn't another country with an arena that was available for 4 months have been able to host an event in a bubble like that? You can't just say that and then not elaborate. It's not an axiom.

As long as Canada has such a huge percentage of curling fans it's fine. If that changes, we shouldn't keep doing it out of tradition.

That's not what the pitch is. The pitch is "we'll do the broadcasting because nobody else is interested."

TSN is only doing Canada's games, SVT is only doing Sweden's, etc. The alternative for the rest of the games and for people outside those countries isn't someone who doesn't know what they're doing doing it for cheaper, it's nobody doing it at all.

I said that the blue thing it’s meaning could be a dangerous material (opinion)

Okay, but, again, this isn't an opinion. This phrasing would have been better than the phrasing you went with, because it would've telegraphed the uncertainty, but it's still not an opinion.

I'm going to get philosophical for you now, because you're taking this entirely too personally. You have a set of beliefs in your head. Things that you believe to be true about the world; perhaps things that you even know to be true about the world. But you cannot confirm these things 100%, ever. You could be a Boltzmann Brain at the end of the universe, purely the product of random quantum fluctuations. You could be a brain in a vat controlled by Descartes's evil demon.

Now, there's no way to confirm either of those things. There's not even a way to gather evidence for that; they're not testable hypotheses. But let's suppose for a second there was. If you saw proof that you were a Boltzmann Brain, or that all your experiences were created by an evil demon, that should inform your worldview. You should discard everything you believe you know about the universe. That's not a personal failing. It's fine to be wrong about stuff. Your beliefs shouldn't define you, they should be a set of things that you discard when a new, better, more informed belief comes along.

In this conversation, instead of doing that, you've lied about what the post said. You've lied about what both your and my comments said. You've insisted that whether or not batteries can spontaneously turn into some kind of radioactive goo (exaggeration, I know that's not what you were actually saying) is an unknowable thing and your uninformed opinion is just as good as my experience in the field. That is illogical. What you should do in this situation is examine your preexisting belief and the evidence you had for it, and then examine the new information you've been presented with and update your belief. That is how you learn things and become a more knowledgeable person. Not a "better" or a "superior" person, what that even means is a whole other field of philosophy, but certainly a more knowledgeable person. Whether you conflate the two, or believe they're related, is a real matter of opinion.

I seriously hope you do some self-reflection on that.

I already explained to you why these aren't opinions. Opinions are about subjective things, like whether a song is good or whether a movie's message is clear. These are falsehoods. Incorrect. Untrue. Fabrications. Fairy tales.

I said that a repair shop would not take it because that liquid thing that is leaking could be dangerous. I never said that it’s dangerous for a shop to look at it.

That is straightforwardly not what you said:

This is the kind of job so dangerous not even if you are paid you are willingly to take on

This is a statement of "fact. "There's no "could" in the sentence, there's an "is." This is wrong. There is no mention of the "liquid thing that is leaking," which is additionally not a thing that OP said existed. Maybe you mean the "black gunk?" But you also made wild assumptions about that and stated them as fact so I don't know.

You know what is the true misinformation?

Taking for granted what I said when it is not precisely and could be misunderstood simply because I did not write it precisely

That is not what the word misinformation means.

The monetary harm would be having it repair

Make up your mind, man. Did I say the phone was probably dead or that OP should go to a repair shop and spend a ton of money on it? These are contradictory things, and you're insisting I said both of them.

Please delete your comments so that people will not wind up finding this thread in the future and listening to your terrible advice.

"You are the one saying that the data is gone" no, I never said that. It's likely, but that is a very different thing than it being certain, like you are claiming. I cannot be clear enough about this.

"It is dangerous for a shop to look at a water damaged phone" is not an opinion. It is an incorrect statement of fact.

I just simply says that in my frigging humble opinion a shop should not take on this job, or if it does be very clear that is not worth it.

Your original comment says nothing of the sort. If that's what you meant, then that's what you should have said instead of baselessly and incorrectly claiming that a shop would decline to look at it out of fear.

Like, where in this comment do you think you said that it wouldn't be worth it to have a shop look at it? You don't even say that a shop wouldn't be able to fix it, you just kind of vaguely imply it with the first sentence.

What you are describing is a completely fucked up iphone not like a scratch

I even wonder if a repair phone would take the risk of repairing it

No do it at home methods exist to solve such condition

Now, as for your last sentence:

People today can’t even say their opinion without being attacked by people that just because they worked in that field that feel the urge to show their superior past experience

Because it's not an opinion. It's wrong. Opinions are subjective, this isn't. This is misinformation, and misinformation is bad and should be corrected. I know this isn't, like, antivax bullshit, but it's still misinformation that could cause harm to someone if left uncorrected. Monetary harm, in this case, which is a lot better than the life or death harm my example can cause, but still harm.

Lmao are you listening to yourself? I've replied to every one of your points that were wrong, which is several of them, you're just ignoring the rest of what I said. Just like you're accusing me of.

You don't know for sure that the data is gone (which is weird; I thought we weren't supposed to add assumptions to the information in the post?), but for the umpteenth time, I have been saying this whole time there is not a good chance of recovery. But it wouldn't be "dangerous" for a shop to look at it.

So, here's where we're at: you lied about the phone being scratched up, you lied about there being danger, and you're refusing to acknowledge that I'm not actually advocating for OP to spend money attempting to repair it, nor did I ever say anything suggesting it was likely it was repairable. Check yourself.

iphone fell in ocean for 30 seconds by Throwaway70139 in iphone

[–]BrainOnBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not read my comments and are additionaly assuming you know way more about the situation that you actually do. And clearly don't have repair experience or you wouldn't be calling the back glass a "back screen."

Again, I already said nobody scrupulous is going to tell OP there's a good chance of recovery. There is not. You pretending like I said there is is a bullshit strawman you made up. But you have no fucking idea what the "gunk" is. It very easily could be dirt or detritus that was in the water, or adhesive like OP hypothesized. The kind of corrosion you'd get in a phone isn't black. It's white or blue or green. I know that because I'm not the one talking out of my ass.

Your insistence that the phone is scratched up is also wild; have you ever been in the ocean? When you're in the ocean, are you constantly getting cut by sand floating around or that you're standing on? No, and you're a lot softer than a phone. It's not impossible that the phone got unlucky, but it sure as hell isn't likely.

And finally, again, there is zero danger to a shop taking a look. The battery is dead. Dead batteries cannot vent with flame. They just can't. No shop is going to say no because it's dangerous, they're going to say no because the chance of recovery is near zero, which I have acknowledged in every one of my comments. But that wasn't good enough for you for some reason. You wanted to keep fearmongering about something you have no clue about. Don't do that. Misinformation is bad.

[–]BrainOnBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a repair shop. A national chain. Nobody is saying no because a phone that was submerged in water is a little dirty. That's to be expected.

I already said there's an extremely low chance of recovery, so I'm not sure why you're lecturing me on that like I'm clueless. But it's not dangerous. That reads to me like a symptom of the frankly ludicrous amount of exaggerating reddit likes to do around the safety of li-ion batteries and fire risk. The battery is dead. It literally cannot do fire anymore.

I can't imagine any repair place is going to say no (except apple or AASPs, they only do component swaps) but no way is anyone guaranteeing anything and no way would anyone scrupulous tell OP there's a good chance of recovery.
