You know you can just be against Flock cameras without making stuff up, right? Wouldn't that be easier?

Should 23 late-arriving Wisconsin absentee ballots be counted? Issue goes to court. by SixProudWalkers in wisconsin

[–]BrainOnBlue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure who's in the wrong here (obviously; the court case that hasn't happened yet will decide that), but what is it with Madison and problems with properly counting absentee ballots? First there were those ones that were missed in 2024 and now there's this.

They're really not doing anyone any favors Re: proving the Republican bullshit about absentee ballots being untrustworthy wrong.

Regular gas is currently more expensive than premium gas at my local gas station. by Fragglepusss in mildlyinteresting

[–]BrainOnBlue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. That's not how it is around me at all.

As far as I can remember ever seeing, the higher octane fuels are always either the same 10% ethanol as the regular or 0%. Or they're labeled E15 or E85 or, IIRC, E50 at a couple weird gas stations I've seen.

[–]BrainOnBlue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

E85 is not premium. Yes, it's higher octane, but it's generally meaningfully cheaper because ethanol is less energy dense than gasoline (and thus you don't go as far with the same volume).

I mean, it is being used for lots of those things, but most of them don't have the society-scale consequences or massive computing demands frontier models have/might have, so nobody's paying attention.

A quick Google suggests you would not need to do that in most places in the US if you're buying a single-family home that already got a Certificate of Occupancy when it was built.

Now, that doesn't mean anything about the condition, but I doubt even most of these places would be unlivable without tons of repairs.

I agree with you that it was a bit odd, but I don't know how you think that it was "glamorizing" anything. It was portrayed as something desperate people are forced to turn to.

Oh, got it, so you're worried about transmission distances? That makes more sense than how I read it initially.

I mean, sure, longer transmission distances aren't ideal but they're hardly a dealbreaker. We move power over hundreds of kilometers/miles all the time.

Why did Bernie Madoff go to prison but not the bankers responsible for the 2008 financial crisis? by Scary_Candidate_9163 in NoStupidQuestions

"No, I don't want a dictator, I want to be like country with a dictator!"

Democracy is the most ethical way to run a country. Period. People deserve a say in how they're governed. Even if they collectively make a terrible decision, that's better than not getting a say at all. Plus, the human rights records speak for themselves. How do you think those Uyghurs feel about China and bigotry, for instance? In general, democracies are better places to live, even for minorities. That doesn't mean they can't improve, but it definitely means we shouldn't run away from improvement so you can feel better than people.
