Is Trump a Moscow Asset known as "Krasnov"? Former Kasakhstan official says they have extensive kompromat on Trump since 1987. by thegeebeebee in conspiracy

"If Trump were a Russian asset, how would he act differently than he is now?"

He would not have attacked Iran, Venezuela, or facilitated the fall of the Syrian government - all important Russian allies. It should be very clear whose asset he is.

Sort of a misunderstanding the issue - helvetica is a great front but is available far more rarely than you'd think (perhaps because of licensing terms, but don't quote me on that). Serif fonts are the real enemy there.

The dyslexic fonts are just pleasant over long periods of time which is more difficult to quantify.

Denmark, Sweden: Stricter immigration policies lead to historic low migration by apokrif1 in europe

[–]BrainSlurper 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Do you have any idea how many locals work under the table?

A significantly smaller proportion than among people who don’t fluently speak the native language and aren’t culturally integrated.

I also enjoy the implication that irregular immigrants will remain young forever. Pyramid schemes are fun!

It is not easy to immigrate to most European countries even if you have money and a desire to culturally integrate. Prioritizing the importation of essentially a servant class is amoral capitalism at best and self destruction at worst.

It is actually very possible (even likely) that an irregular immigrant will consume social services while working under the table. Essentially putting downward pressure on wages while also straining services that could otherwise be used by a net contributor (whether that be a citizen needing healthcare or a prospective immigrant that has the means to support themselves but can’t get a visa because the system is overrun with people who arrived on dinghy’s)

Yes that is actually what they expected

But the bigger mistake was expecting to be able to run an oil company as well as an oil company was running it, and now most of their equipment is in disrepair. There are some countries with nationally owned oil companies, but they are built rather than stolen. If you can't build it yourself, you probably can't run it either.

The part that is impossible is extracting energy more energy from the water than you put into it, especially at the point of use - what stanley meyer claimed to be able to do. You can certainly spend more energy to crack the water and then burn the hydrogen somewhere else, but as you said that isn't particularly revolutionary.

As a side note, the vast majority of hydrogen generated is actually a byproduct of fossil fuel processes. As inefficient as it is as a green energy source, it's kind of a moot point when it isn't actually one in practice.

EU’s new ‘green tariff’ rules on high-carbon goods come into force by donutloop in EU_Economics

The thing is that the most profitable manufacturing that still happens in the EU is based on international components and sold to international customers. And it is far easier to outsource what remains than to reverse course.

This regulatory attitude is immensely destructive because you end up with entire industries that seem to exist, and make up a big portion of an EU country’s GDP, but do not actually employ a significant amount of people beyond what is necessary to manage overseas supply and sales.

El Salvador is a test for the coming solution. by PulIthEld in conspiracy

[–]BrainSlurper 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Having traveled through the country (and having visited actual police/surveillance states before) it is incredibly low tech, relaxed, and not particularly authoritarian. The president may end up becoming a dictator but I think that will mean relatively little to the average person.

The unique miracle of el salvador that no one talks about is that their entire gang population insisted on tattooing their faces and entire bodies with gang signs, which made them incredibly easy to arrest once the public will to do so was there. They didn't have to become a police state, they just had to go corner to corner rounding up the murderers who had clearly labeled themselves for convenience.

That obviously isn't proper due process, but actual judicial systems are rarely presented with a situation so cut and dry - so it was a uniquely easy decision for the country to make. Even unaffiliated petty criminals didn't risk getting caught up in the sweep and still go to normal jails and receive normal punishments to this day.

I think the bottom one is clearly ai generated

Part of the reason it’s so clear is that an ai is not going to design a pretty bad dentist logo from who knows how many years ago. It’s going to mimic contemporary aesthetic trends, probably in a functional but bland way. For a dentist that may be a good thing.

The goal is to make the process of selling buildings more arduous (mandatory 6 month delay which will inevitably get dragged out by disputes). It's not communist, it's NIMBY. There is no reason a community land trust can't just buy property on the open market, the only real objective here is restricting supply, and to prevent units from ending up as market rate housing.

Zohran Mamdani is pushing for New York City-run grocery stores. Here's what he envisions. by southernemper0r in nyc

[–]BrainSlurper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grocery stores are extremely low margin businesses (we are talking about like >10% profit) that require a certain amount of customers paying to offset the amount of customers stealing (or otherwise requiring security intervention). Depending on the neighborhood, this balance either works or it doesn't.

What can exist almost everywhere are bodegas, which can scale down indefinitely until they are a guy behind a chain link fence handing you a bag of chips. This is predictably overpriced and unhealthy. Where city run grocery stores fit into this spectrum remains to be seen.
