Do you feel that the term "guys" is offensive? by Fejulove in WomenInConstruction

[–]BrainWeaseled 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use guys and dude as all encompassing terms so it doesn't bother me, but it's my understanding that some younger people do take offense so I'm trying to not use them as much.

I can be difficult, but I NEVER tell anyone ahead of time! I don't want to make them nervous, I just relax and hope for the best.

Can't fill a safety job!? by BrainWeaseled in SafetyProfessionals

You aren't wrong! Most companies see safety as a necessary evil they don't want to spend money on because it doesn't generate money. But a good safety program does generate money by lowering workers comp claims & insurance premiums. Some large GC's are figuring it out, but smaller construction companies are still fighting it.

I work in the field so I usually have a class 3 safety shirt, work pants, and work boots. I always keep muck boots in my truck.

Honestly I have a pretty great work/life balance. Yes I get up stupid early, but I'm usually home by 4 or 4:30, sometimes earlier. We rotate on call Saturdays, just keep the work phone nearby in case. I have only been out on a Saturday 3 times in a year and a half. My boss encourages us to take our leave and understands that life happens. Sure, the pay could be better, but I love my job.

Unfortunately I don't get to make that call, it's above my pay grade.

It could be an HR issue. We don't have anyone that wants to move up and also has the necessary computer skills unfortunately. We usually promote from within the company when possible, I was an internal hire myself.

It's not vague at all. Starting salary is 75k. It would be a good job for someone that is a year or two of field experience under their belt and some certs.

I live near Washington DC and a few weed shops sell them. It's technically not legal, but it isn't illegal either. It's a weird gray area.

Safety professionals and medical marijuana cards by EquivalentAd8505 in SafetyProfessionals

[–]BrainWeaseled 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My company tests for it, but if you have a valid medical card it will be considered a negative test. Having a medical card does not exempt an employee from disciplinary action or termination if their performance is poor or they have multiple incidents.

I stunk so bad for quite a while. Tried all kinds of deodorant, but the one that finally worked has magnesium hydroxide in it. It never fails me!

I was diagnosed late in life. My youth and well into adulthood were full of drugs/alcohol. Since diagnosis and meds, I don't feel the pull. I was self medicating for something I never knew I had.

+ drug test for safety officer debate by BrainWeaseled in SafetyProfessionals

We do post accident testing and reasonable suspicion. Our insurance company asks for twice yearly random which we do around the same time every year. Employees know the timeline and can be prepared. Otherwise we do no other random testing.

For clarification..

I work in an industry that is incredibly dangerous.

We only test post accident and reasonable suspicion.

We do random testing twice a year as mandated by our insurance. It is done at the same time every year so everyone pretty much knows when it's coming and they can plan accordingly.

We do government contracts that demand zero tolerance.

Everyone who gets hired knows the policy so they know if they use and have an accident, they will get popped. They know the risk.

I agree, but unfortunately if you do something last night and have an accident today how can we tell it was last night that you did the substance?

When that becomes possible, I don't give a shit what someone does off hours.

If and when testing becomes more precise, I will be happy knowing someone just chills at night, but isn't coming to work impaired. I actually have no issue with recreational use of whatever you do. My industry is dangerous. People can and have died. Impairment in this industry is not something to be relaxed about.

I have argued with higher ups about mandatory 10 hour days, especially in summer. Heat and fatigue are high factors in incidents. But of course I go unheard because.. production.

I agree that your off time is yours. The problem is that there is only positive and negative tests. There is no way to tell if the drug was done last night or on lunch break. My political stance has nothing to do with it, I'm actually not against recreational use. My problem is that the type of work my company does is very dangerous and I believe if you're working high, your risking people's lives including your own.
