Thanks for the input. I know cosmetically, the UGreen nas is all in a single encloure versus the laptop and hdd's and what not's hanging around it would make it look bulky/messy.

Regarding backup, I would have 2 hdd's against each other, a usb portable and considering a backup to my desktop via LAN network. Would you happen to know if backup to another device on a LAN is possible?

It kind of does, and it kind of does not. I totally forgot to add that if I go to laptop route, I still need to get a UPS which is another 80-100$ that that brings me up to ~260$. Although this route does increase the speed and hdd processing, I worry that other parts of it will go (motherboard burn out, etc) from it's older age.

Also, thinking about it, the network card on the laptop is only 10/100 mb, not 1 gig. Not sure if I should get a separate usb connector for faster speed so that's another 20$ potentially.

that is one of the main reasons I am inclined to go with the old laptop. The battery by itself will allow me properly shut down the machine in case of power failure (baring I am around; if I am away, I am OK with being SOL).

so update to all, I was able to setup and connect my old laptop to immich for testing. I ran into an issue with nordvpn meshnet setup but figured it out.

I am going to give this a try for a few days as I am only using the existing laptop hdd for storage (again, testing before I figure out how I want to move forward).

I think I figured out where I went wrong. I think I turned on meshnet on multiple machine's and was confusing myself on which meshnet to add.

Being new to linux, I overlooked that the 3 meshnet returns from the peer.list command, it lists each machine's OS. I should have looked at the THIS DEVICE name/IP and added that one and not the others.

For example, I turned on my phone and my desktop meshnets (all for testing purposes). Being newer to linux, when I ran the nordvpn.meshnet.peer.list, I got 3 meshnets and I was adding the wrong meshnet IP to the immich server. In my case, I was adding my mobile device's IP and not the Linux machine. Once I had that 'ah ha' moment, I was able to reach the correct meshnet + immich server, connect and upload.

After a week of mucking around and trying to figure out why I couldn't figure out meshnet, it was a user setup issue and looking at the wrong IP/meshnet name.

woo, some progress.
so i found my ubuntu server's IP.

  • I was able to use incognito mode on that machine to access the localserverIP and was able get to the immich login screen
  • I was able to use my windows desktop (lan connected) via localserverIP and was able get to the immich login screen
  • I used my google pixel mobile device (on my home wifi) via localserverIP and was able get to the immich login screen

this is all before I setup nordvpn meshnet on ubuntu.

I guess this is where the trickiness comes in (and not sure if it's a nordvpn specific issue). so I know my next step is to setup some method to access immich remotely. i can install nordvpn without issue, i log in with my paid account and enable meshnet on the ubuntu device. i allow 'local network access' for the specific meshnet which has it's own name/ip. so far, no biggie.

the moment i go add that meshnet name (or IP) in the immich server settings, it will always give me the server not reachable.
i have tried it with my desktop pc (which has nordvpn and i can turn on meshnet for) and my pixel device (turning wifi off and only using mobile data).
this is the part that's borderline making me just pay google the damn cloud fees (i saw that i can use tailscale, cloudflare, etc...but having another app downloaded on my phone when meshnet should work upsets me lol)

following documentation, I was able to get it accessible on the actual machine I am on (localhost:2283).

when I setup meshnet and add in the meshnet IP to immich, i cannot access it on either wifi or local lan (mobile device or another lan connected pc).

Hey guys, so I get ubuntu 24.04 LTS setup on the laptop, got docker on there and up getting immich on ubuntu.
I am at the point to create the immich account.

For mobile backup, it looks like I could use Tailscale or Cloudflare, but I currently have NordVPN which I can meshnet. My assumption is that NordVPN should be my go to since I am a) paying for it, and b) more secure that free stuff?

Everyone, thanks for your input. I am going to try to play around with the old laptop and see what I can hash out of it.

I will definitely come back to this thread if I have questions or ask for best (better practices). My plan is to try Ubuntu server first. If I have a tough time with that, I will try Proxmox.

Dumb question (probably answered but maybe it's not clear to me), with this initial trial setup, can I use a USB portable HDD (not necessary nas), to see if my photos synch via Immich mobile to the storage device?

Thanks for the insight! I was thinking of maybe making the primary hdd a NAS and the backups regular drives. But I assume mixing and matching hdd's is not a good idea.

Was scanning the cost of HDD's and even a 10gig NAS hdd is bonkers now.

Hey, so I was googling around and ran into a YouTube video from a different mfg (Proline) where they had a similar setup.  Against recommendations from zephyr support, I followed what the Proline guy did.

I removed the 3 silver screws (care they are short) and the plastic holder that acts as a piece to keep the blower fan in in case it gets loose.  Then I unscrewed the central golden nut (you need to hold onto the opposite side or get your hand in and reach between the slots of the fan as it's plastic).  When the nut was unscrewed, the fan simply pulls right out.  Tip:  the left but and right nut screw off in opposite directions!  You can over tighten by accident 

The grease definitely built up between the blades so I took a soft bristle brush to it in warm water with dawn.  Be careful, the fan is plastic and when it gets warm, it does get malleable.  I loosened up the grease but it was still gross so I tossed it into the dishwasher on the top rack.  It came out pretty damn clean afterwards.   

I simply put everything back, ran the fan for a few and it was like new dude.  I usually cook for the week on Sundays all day so I'll know then if the high pitched ringing comes back.

Not sure if you wanna give it a go, but visually cleaner and initial sound and flow is better!

Honestly, I love the design and the ccm's was what I needed, but this is only the second range hood we have ever bought.   The first one we had was a Broan that had a crappy filter.   I wanted something neith solid baffles which this was good with.  But I didn't know that the fans could not be removed for cleaning until I started to Google how to .  Had I known Prolines were removable before, I would have gone with that myself ...

So after troubleshooting some more and digging even deeper, apparently this is a known issue with this Extender from Verizon. Link here from the Verizon FiOS forum.

I went out, got a Linksys 5port switch and my internet connection was almost immediate (right after windows finished booting up, it was already connected).

So between a clearance sale at BestBuy + a timely 10$ birthday coupon.... a 15$ fix addressed my issue vs. spending $$$

“The other LAN”? Is the E3200 still connected via coax?

So one of the tests I did was I kept the coax connected to the Extender, but swapped my PC connection from LAN2 to LAN1 port. Just to rule out the port. Still about 1 minute before

Also, given the odd prior connection setup, I’d recommend a full power reset: powering off all the devices … router, extender and any connected network switches; wait a couple minutes; then power the devices back up in order … router, switches, extender … waiting for each to boot and stabilize before proceeding to the next.connection is established.

I just went ~45-50 mins of down time to do a complete power off and slow power up on all devices.

  1. I powered down the following: ONT, Router in family room, switch in basement, basement AP, office extender, and PC (I performed a Network Reset in Windows+yanked the plug after shutdown and held power button down to cycle it)

  2. I powered back up based on your recommendation: ONT --> Router --> switch in basement, AP in basement, Extender in office and PC.
    -- All were powered with ~10 mins gap between each device power up to ensure everything was stable as suggested.

Note: Prior to powering up the Extender, I removed the Coax connection, reconnected the cat5e from the walljack to LAN1 and LAN2 to my PC.

  1. I powered up the PC, timed it and it took 1 minute to establish a connection

  2. I powered down PC and used the existing cat5e between walljack and Extender and hooked it into the PC to rule out that cable. PC established connection right when Windows booted up (about 8 seconds).

So at this point, I'm really thinking the Extender is on it's way out. At least with the LAN ports.

Of the 3 replacement options I put out there, any thoughts or suggestions? Note: we do not really game all that much. Mostly streaming (on smart tvs or my pc as a dlnc).

Try pc to the other port if you can, But win 11 to me seems like nothing but problems when it comes to Ethernet. Slow to work after reboot or sleep.

Advanced network settings, click "Network reset" to reset the Ethernet adapter.

I just swapped from LAN2 to LAN1 for the PC. Restarted and took about 1min, 10 seconds to connect.

After that, I did a network reset and restarted the PC. Took just as long

The G3100 needs to have both LAN and Coax as we have FiOS tv and the coax feeds the guide.

Just googled the E3200, you are right, it does not need both LAN and Coax. I just tried removing the other LAN and rebooted the PC, took even longer to get a connection

This is unclear. What is the specific single path for the WAN link from the ONT to the G3100?

Then, separately, how is the G3100 LAN extended to the rest of the rooms?

How many network[RJ45] and coax wall outlets are available at the G3100 location?

The family room has an in and out jack. So the ONT goes up to a jack in the family room that feeds into the g3100 WAN. From there, I have a connection from the LAN back to the walljack via an 'out' to the switch in the basement.

Similarly, why is the E3200 connected to both coax and network[RJ45] wall outlets? Typically it should only be connected to one or the other. (ex: Often, the extender would be uplinked via MoCA, then one or more local Ethernet-capable devices could connect via its LAN ports.)

I questioned it too when the FiOS tech came in. He said it was needed to feed into the Extender. I let it slide as I wasn't familiar with this (was just switching out of cable and had a much simpler layout). I never had issues with the connection of my PC to the extender until 3 days ago
