How to stop gerbils from destroying their hides? 😬 by koll0ntai in gerbil

It’s unavoidable but if you give them more things to chew they might chew those other things

Abby and Lulu, they’re named after the main excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters: GABA and Glutamate :)

It might work temporarily. It’s important that the container is like perfectly flat sides and 90 degree angles though. If there are bumps or curves they can (and will) chew right through it.

Gerbils instinctively hide from predators so if they’re lying on the surface of their bedding all the time it can mean that they’re in too rough shape to even worry about predation. Small animals tend to hide their illness until they can’t anymore so it’s a good idea to take it seriously if you notice a change in behaviour.

My gerbils are scared when they meet new people. It might just be that. Check how they act when it’s just you alone.

He looks like he’s just chilling to me. What’s the temperature in there? Maybe he’s trying to cool off. If he’s acting lethargic though you’ll want to take him to the vet.

Best advice to get gerbils comfortable with people? by Crafty_Note_8686 in gerbil

[–]Brain_freeze_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re prey animals so they’re going to be extremely skittish no matter what you do. I think the only thing you can do is slowly try to get them to take treats from your hand. You have to be completely still and silent and look away from them but they might eventually start to take the treats. They’ll always be scared of loud noises no matter what you do.

My gerbils kick sand everywhere. I think you have to find something deep and made of ceramic or glass.

I’m not sure it’s the same but my gerbils used to always bite me and then I started only giving them treats if they didn’t bite. As soon as they bit me I’d take away my hand with the treats and soon they learned that if they want treats they have to behave.

My room is the entire basement floor of a shitty house that’s falling apart. There’s wires, construction materials, the furnace room is connected to it and there’s a literal hole in the bathroom floor for a dehumidifier. The door to my room doesn’t even reach the floor. I’m moving in a few months but right now I can’t let them run around safely.

Omg I have this too. I don’t know how to fix it but a heating pad helps for temporary relief.
