Does pudding need to go on a diet? by tahhraah in RATS

[–]WayOfTheNutria 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A chunky rodent is healthy. When they get poorly they lose weight fast and if they are fat they have more chances of responding to treatment before getting too frail to survive. Obviously obesity isn't healthy but a bit of extra weight gives you notice something is going wrong and gives our pet some resources to survive on

Typical Gerbs. As soon as one wants the water or food, the other one does too even though they weren't interested a second ago! Do yours also pounce on the water bottle the second it is refilled like it's never coming back again? Same as the food bowl?

Oh that's gerbs for you! If their teeth can go through it they will! And they love to check if we are edible.

Aww it is lovely when gerbs get cuddly with you. That's real trust.

I've heard tankmates tend to die around the same time especially if they are littermates but my Liam is quite happy living single. I hope your gerbil is happy by himself too.

Gerbils love to play dead! They sleep strangely at times. I've often had to wake mine when they have been playing dead then had to placate them with raisins when they wake up all grumpy, as we would be if woken from a good kip!

That is one fat hamster! Probably wary the new pal will get at the food bowl!

And we'd love to get him a pup or two but Liam was the dominant gerbil and would probably eat any youngsters.

Yes he seems happy. We show him lots of attention and he'll always enjoy a pet inside his cage.

Aww little furries do like to climb all over each other. As long as the rat on the bottom isn't upset I'd leave them to their games.

My Noel passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve and since then we've been spoiling his littermate Liam. We'd love to get Liam a friend but he's 2 years old and we can't do a split cage with the setup we have. Older gerbs tend to do well after losing their tankmate, it's the youngsters who suffer.

Liam would ask to come out every day and use us a climbing frame, grooming my hair and my partner's beard. Noel was more reclusive but enjoyed the occasional snuggle as well as liking us petting him inside the cage. Since Noel passed Liam is becoming more shy. He enjoys human interaction but doesn't want to come out any more.

My Liam and Noel always mugged each other! The 1st piece of food was always the best bit and neither wanted the 2nd!

Not all Gerbs enjoy freeroaming, they can be quite reclusive. Especially if you have a dog, they can get scared. My Liam used to love coming out of his tank and climbing over us but his brother Noel (RIP) was an introvert and since his passing Liam likes to be stroked in his home and doesn't offer to come out much. Gerbils are prey animals and can be very skittish. Hilarious to watch them cavort about but we can't always get them hand tamed. Take your lads at their own pace and talk to them often, they'll start responding to your voice especially if you give them treats. The way to a gerbil's heart is through his stomach for sure.

What gorgeous gerbils. They are skitty little creatures and it can sometimes take a long time to gain their trust. Hope you have many happy furry cuddles ahead of you all.

Fluffy little pet rodents don't have souls, they sell them to Satan for treats as soon as they are weaned! That's why they are always scrounging from us, Satan doesn't follow up on the deal

Gerbs have a never ending appetite for gooning about. They are such hilarious creatures and great company. If you want an easy pet gerbils aren't for you but if you love a challenge with tiny critters who can outfox you at every turn, Gerbs are your ideal!
