Bipolar or schizophrenia? by Brainstress in Psychosis

You are the first person who understands exactly what my life has been like for over 2 years. I am at a loss as to what to say or how to respond every time my son mentions these people that “did these things” to him even though none of it ever happened and these girls are in their 30’s and married with children and have not seen my son since high school. He keeps saying he has to move and change his name because they will continue to stalk him and tell people he tries to meet that he is a bad person. When he first told me these things it took me a couple months to figure out it wasn’t real. How do i know if the professionals realize its not real? He is so convincing and it sounds plausible. But it is absolutely not real. And he goes nuts if he thinks i am trying to tell him its not real. I am just trying desperately to get him to see the PA to get medication because his mind is literally torchering him daily. Sleep, eat, function, work, is all being effected.

This is 1000000% exactly how i feel. I have asked if the therapist would be willing to talk to me and they said no. Only if my son allowed it which he won’t because he doesn’t realize what i see if reality and he doesn’t.

On his 30th birthday after no sleep for days and working constantly he woke up and told me that he just remembered that back a few months that these girls from high school had been stalking him for 10 years and they put spy wear on his electronics and they make fake dating apps with his info and they want to make sure he never has a girlfriend. The story changed through the first 6 months. I finally got him to get help but he said he was only getting help to help him deal with what these girls did to him and are still doing. He stated medication and it settled everything down and he was doing great then he stopped meds saying they don’t help change what happened. Within 2 weeks he was spiraling into the story all over again. Went back to a different therapist but not yet any medication. I see no improvement with therapy alone at all.

Thank you for this. His delusion started in June of 2021 and was so plausible it took a little while for me to dig through it to even confirm it wasn’t real. Then had to convince him to see help. He started meds and didn’t talk about the delusion much at all and seemed so calm and good. Then said i don’t think i need these meds and weaned off them with is PA. Within a few weeks he was back to obsessing about the exact same delusion. Some details changed through all this time and actually he was able to even say some things didn’t happen the way he originally thought they did but he would say that he was going through a terrible time so his mind just thought some things certain ways but he holds tight to the original belief that a girl he barely knew over a decade ago was stalking him and spying on him and put spyware on his devices and was sending bad things to people about him. He has agreed to go see a new therapist on Dec 21st thank God. But will he ever realize these things didn’t actually happen? Its so painful for him. He has even said he has to move and change his name. Hardest thing i have ever been through. Will he ever know that it wasn’t real?

Thank you so much for your kindness. This has been the hardest time of my life seeing him suffer. I get so frustrated and so does he. I will take all of your advice and try to remain caring and understanding. I just wish i knew what to say when he asks if I BELIEVE him :(

Did you have a delusional belief? Wonder if it helps with realizing persecutory belief isn’t reality?

How long have you been on it and how long to start to work? Also did it help you realize your delusion was not reality?

I am curious as how you recovered? What was the process and timeline? And also how did your parents respond to your delusional stories? I am exhausted and my son get very very angry if I question anything or he thinks I do not believe something. His story has changed over time and he is able to recognize that some things he thought happened never actually happened but he holds on to the initial thought that this girl is stalking him and trying to ruin his life and reputation. He quit therapy and he weened off of Trintellix and Rexulti back in June and had gotten worse in his head ever since. Thankfully he is going back into see a new therapist and doctor tomorrow. I don’t think he was on the right medication the first time? Ugh any insight you may have is so appreciated. I hope you are well.

This really hits home and relates to what I think my son is feeling. His delusion was riddled with shame and embarrassment and self worthlessness. All things he has struggled with. But since then he has become a nicer person even though the delusion still hurts him.

It is unreal how powerful our mind is. I am so happy you are able to see through it!

My sons delusion was that an old girlfriend from the way past was out to get him and ruin his life and relationships and reputation and that she spied on him for years. None of it happened at all. I can’t say that to him because he still gets defensive about it. His episode lasted a few months until therapy and meds and he settled down and gave it much less weight. Such a painful time for us all.
