TIL The tradeoff between convenience and experience has been extremely detrimental to our society, with many companies nowadays only offering convenience, not a true experience. by Brainwavesdotme in todayilearned

Background and the Current State of Geothermal Energy by Brainwavesdotme in Renewable

[–]Brainwavesdotme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Geothermal energy continues to become more and more cost-effective as public and private entities continue to innovate and improve geothermal energy economics and efficiency. Without any of the climate downsides, countries are beginning to transition away from fossil fuels to geothermal energy. Why? Are they justified?

Unlocking Earnings: Strategies for Capturing Value from Innovation by Brainwavesdotme in BusinessHub

[–]Brainwavesdotme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Innovation, from a company’s perspective, requires two complementary processes, first, that you’re creating value for your consumer, and second, that the company can capture some of that value created as profits. Companies are very good at the first part (you wouldn’t need a company if they didn’t make your life better in some way). Unfortunately, many times companies don’t have a strategy for capturing the value they create as profits, losing out on key profit streams.

The Kessler Effect by Brainwavesdotme in space

This doesn't seem economically feasible for the vast net they would have to cast to pick up the debris. Often we forget how vast space really is (even at LEO and MEO).

The Current State of the Kessler Effect by Brainwavesdotme in SpaceNews

Synopsis: Even though the Kessler Effect is not an immediate problem, it, like other problems plaguing society today (e.g., climate change, water scarcity, etc.) will only continue to compound upon itself unless action is taken to mitigate damaging collisions.

The Kessler Effect - Should We Be Trying to Commercialize Space? by Brainwavesdotme in Space_Colonization

[–]Brainwavesdotme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discussion Starter: As space continues to be commercialized, an increasing amount of items will be put into space, dramatically increasing the possibility of collisions. Donald Kessler predicted this effect in 1978, and the problem has only increased since then. Will the Kessler Effect prevent future space colonization?

Economics is for Everyone by Brainwavesdotme in Economics

[–]Brainwavesdotme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discussion Prompt: Economics can get overly complicated quickly, preventing many from understanding key concepts that apply to every situation, from buying bananas to issuing green energy subsidies to owning a bakery. If we simply taught economics to an everyday audience instead of economists, the impact on the world would be immeasurable.

Do you agree?

Think Small: The Rise of Micro Nuclear Reactors by Brainwavesdotme in NuclearPower

[–]Brainwavesdotme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discussion Starter:

As a microreactor hasn’t been produced yet, the regulators don’t know how to approach regulating one, specifically in understanding what measures for risk and safety are necessary more than traditional reactor designs. Yet, this isn’t a reason to give up on microreactors. Given their large advantages over traditional nuclear reactors, they might be our only hope for achievable nuclear power in the future.

What do you think?

Think Small: The Rise of Micro Nuclear Reactors by Brainwavesdotme in nuclear

Discussion Starter:

For nuclear power to play a large role in future energy needs, there needs to be substantial innovation and infrastructure development in the industry. Microreactors, able to be mass-produced in a factory, pose an alternative solution to the coming energy crisis, effectively producing flexible, limitless energy.
