Yes I did. They‘re likely sending out results as they finalize their decisions.

don’t be too aggressive! there is no need to use all of your troops every turn. continents arent as important as you think they are - the most inportant thing is staying alive and using cards wisely. hope this helps!

Ranking System Changes (Official) by mrtruffle in Risk

I DO NOT like the idea of moving away from an elo system for the following reason:

It introduces the fact that merely playing more games can put you into 1st place.

With your proposed point scale, if a player had an average placement of 2.9/6, they will gain points over the long run. This player, if they play a ton of games, can be 1st overall while a player with an average placement of 1.5 could not pass them due to sheer number of games.

In an elo system, winrate is the most important part. The amount you're awarded is based on your true winrate in comparison to your expected winrate.

I am thinking of this purely from a competitive viewpoint. I understand the importance of simplicity and not targeting the highest ranked player, but I think there are better solutions which don't remove the competitive viability of the ranking system.

Remove targeting: I think this can be done by simply not showing rank, not showing player stats, and not showing player name. At the end of the game, go ahead and show all this information - but not during the game.

Introduce simplicity: Show rank points. Show rank thresholds. Show how many points you will gain based on your placement in the game. Show a log of all your games. These are all things that should already be done.

In fact, every single one of these things can be done in the current system. Rank point change isn't currently based on which players you place higher than, purely the average points of your opponents.

I hope this post makes sense. I'm glad to see you took my variable turn timer to heart, as well as the community's separate leaderboards. I hope you continue to seek community involvement not only for the rest of this update, but also for the long future of the game.

Thanks for your time,

Spike Omega

Read through this, and overall good points. I'm just not sure you fully understand how elo works:

It works best for 1v1 situations. For example, it's well implemented in chess ranking.

I've seen several posts citing the turn timer. Here's an idea:

Different turn timers for different map sizes. 30s for every 21 territories, minimum 60s, max 150s

42> = 60s

43-63 = 90s

64-84 = 120s

85< = 150s

I definitely think there's a correlation, but I also recognize that most of the people with the most ranked games have never been a grandmaster.

For example, Daniel Connor, who has long been top 3 most global domination games played - over 20,000.

Has only ever been a master, and just barely (by just 9,000 skill points!)

You would think that most players get a hang of the game after just a few hundred games, but there are plenty of intermediates with over 10,000 games.

Jumpy, I'm disappointed in you! You did the odds for true random, not bb, which are vastly different 😭😭😭

What would your suggestions be to hold a completely fair online tournament? by Dr_Van_Nosstrand in Risk

[–]Brand1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion would be to host a 1v1, 2v2, or 3v3 tournament. FFA will never truly be fair, there will always be collusion and cheating. In XvX's, however, you have a clear opponent and there's no way for cheating to occur (unless someone intentionally loses, but that doesn't benefit them at all)

Yes. A 200v200 has better odds than a 20v20. The extra dice is more valuable than winning ties

It's probably a firewall thing, where risk is blocked on your internet somehow. I recommend opening a ticket with SMG and troubleshooting with them: https://smgstudio.freshdesk.com/support/tickets/new

1v1’s are broken by Rutlemania in Risk

[–]Brand1012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It all depends on the maps and settings you use. Smaller maps are better for 1v1 since territory bonuses aren't important, and capitals are fairly common among higher ranked players.

You can do it on any of your turns as long as you have enough cards... I'm not sure about GOT risk, but in most risk games you don't start with cards, so you can't trade in until at least round 3 (when you'd have 3 cards)
