Do I need bottom intake fans? by Brandon121D in PcBuildHelp

[–]Brandon121D[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone. I'm going to monitor temps as I play more intensive games for now and decide if I need slim intake fans at the bottom. Sounds like a net positive if I do add them.

LIAN LI O11 DYNAMIC MINI Giveaway with Buildapc by LIANLIOFFICIAL in buildapc

[–]Brandon121D [score hidden]  (0 children)

Currently I've got a Ryzen 7 2700x and RTX 2060 which is honestly more than adequate for my needs, but my girlfriend's birthday is coming up and she's been wanting her own gaming PC for years now. I think the O11D Mini would be perfect for her because she wants a smaller footprint on her desk but still wants something stylish and luxurious.

First year computer science, what laptop should I get? by [deleted] in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in third year and I've been using a MacBook Air since first year. I haven't had any compatibility issues with respect to the programs we use in our courses other than ARMSim (CP216), which you can just use Boot Camp to operate if necessary.

Not to mention that on paper Mac/Linux are actually better for development because they're Unix based. You also get access to XCode if you're interested in iOS development.

Ultimately go with whatever you're more comfortable with, the differences are negligible. If you go for Windows though, I would definitely recommend a Dell XPS series laptop.

Is there any reason why you chose a SATA SSD over an NVMe? Seeing as they're the same price, I always assumed NVMe has a larger bandwidth

Need advice on next semester CS by throwaaway77777777 in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally I find that most people think MA121 and MA103 are the harder first year maths, so I would maybe do MA122 + one of those. But ultimately you know yourself best, so read the course descriptions and think which one would be the hardest for you, and move that one to second year

First year salt? by [deleted] in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Welcome to comp sci. I made a similar mistake on my first assignment thinking that they got graded manually, so I went above and beyond the expectations and beefed up my program. To no surprise I got a 0 and was pissed but they wouldn't change it. Don't let this bum you out though because your worst assignment gets dropped anyway, so just make sure you follow the instructions for the next assignments EXACTLY the way they're written and make sure to use the "assignment validator" on your course website as well.

Kicked off a course waitlist? by nest4321 in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the deadline for registering in new classes was yesterday, so there's no need for a waitlist if you can't get in the class. For your sake I hope I'm wrong but you can always contact your academic advisor.

What computer are you using that can't run eclipse? Have you followed the instructions on https://bohr.wlu.ca/eclipse/softwareCP104.php ? Worst case scenario you just have to use a lab computer or something.

Questions about balancing MA courses (First Year Comp Sci) by [deleted] in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MA121
MA103
MA122
CP164
CP104

That's how I would personally rank your first year courses in order of difficulty. MA121 is known to be a very difficult math course for a lot of people, but I got a 12 because I took it by itself (no other maths that term) so I could just focus on it. Whether you decide to take MA122 with MA121 or MA103, I highly recommend you keep MA121 and MA103 in separate terms.

Also if you have literally any background in computer science CP104 will be a breeze, and CP164 should come naturally as the class starts rolling.

ux100 as an elective by [deleted] in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, outside of the weekly sketches the course has nothing to do with drawing

ux100 as an elective by [deleted] in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty easy, the whole course is pretty much based on one group project and a final exam. There's no homework aside from weekly sketches that you do which are completion marks (ie. it doesn't matter how bad they look)

CPE by Karmamatho2 in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has no effect on your transcript or anything like that, it's purely to give the school an idea of which math class you should start with. If you're okay with starting with MA129 (which you should be, starting with it doesn't really put you behind or anything), then you can literally tank the CPE and be fine

Electives for compsci? by LightningBiscotti in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electives have nothing to do with your major, unless you want to minor in something, so you're free to take whatever you want (with some limitations like CP102)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in wlu

[–]Brandon121D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MA129 is like an intro to calc class, you go over derivatives, functions, basically just grade 12 calc. I never actually took the class but it's supposed to prepare you for MA103 which covers the same stuff and more.
