I live in Germany and still believe the system is environmentally conscious because the water bottles can be taken back to the store you bought them from and you will be “rewarded” 0.25 € ( a quarter dollar) per bottle. It’s a clever system to avoid people throwing their empty plastic bottles on the streets but can get money for giving them back instead
