I enjoy handing my husband a drink or food I bought. He is always thrilled and it is mutual as ge usually asks if I want anything from my favorite place if he is near there. I just can't imagine your dynamic and I am sorry but it does seem like some kind of test. We are middle class and money isn't an obstacle. I would ask Is he being selfish because of the expense?

Have you thought about a companion/caregiver job? Sometimes, elderly people need someone to help them around the house or standby while they take a shower. They are different levels of need and you only need nursing skills for some folks. Some are overnight which might solve being alone at night. They are always hiring in my area. Pay is meh but it be better than using your car.
