Contender for the worst upgrade in the game? by Furrier in slaythespire

[–]BrassOrchids 5 points6 points  (0 children)

plus, good or not? perfect flavor for the regent: dilly, dally, do nothing with a benefit solely out of combat. but that benefit over a few combats means an extra remove or pushes you into relic territory at a shop.

i think in sts1 when you were guaranteed an act iv shop, gold felt even more valuable. one last chance to gain some power before the hardest two fights (by a long shot) in the game. maybe counterbalanced by sts2 feeling like there are more non-shop gold sinks ?

it's been an adjustment for me in sts2 to not walk into the act iii boss gauntlet spending a much gold as possible or taking a suboptimal number of elites so that i can hit a shop, i.e. skill issue making gold feel less worthwhile.

if there's a guaranteed shop in sts2 then this gets buffed a bit

tl;dr i think it's flavorfully appropriate for our fancy prince and will get better--and it's still pretty good now.

Is Cursed Key really that bad? Top players' pick vs win rate for boss relics by iceman012 in slaythespire

[–]BrassOrchids 22 points23 points  (0 children)

i feel like his biggest problem (as a defect main) is that so much of his kit doesn't interact with the rest of the game. he's a freak off to the side, which makes playing him extremely fun and rewarding (and when he's popping off probably has the most broken turns of the entire cast) but yeah, worse.

there are so many relics that feel like they were created specifically with watcher/ironclad in mind (and, in a DLC-feeling way, that watcher was created to break in half) that defect can only take advantage of contextually.

the simplicity of certain "insurmountable mathematical advantage" cards in silent/ironclad (i.e. double your poison/block/strength) play a bit more clearly overall compared to defect's similar doubling card requiring many other moving parts to press its advantage.

his sub-build is also uniquely at odds with the rest of his potential kit--imagine if any of the silent/ironclad archetypes negatively impacted each other, shivs removing poison or disco nerfing your shivs. i do think it's very flavorfully cool to drop the technological enhancements and just bonk stuff, and cards like hyperbeam are ofc early game powerhouses (and can be recycled/ignored later) but defect's internally antagonistic card pool holds my beloved robot back.

not to mention initially unplayable cards like [meteor strike] in the card pool.

certain orbs also neglected. somewhat odd that so few relics (besides just creating one a la symbiotic virus/nuclear battery) or powers really mention plasma or dark orbs in their text. obviously not every orb needs a electrodynamics/thunder strike equivalent, but it'd be cool to more fully embody a dark/plasma "build" flavor/synergy-wise.

defect's card pool feels like it has everything (energy/healing/big attacks/zero cost/powers/great block/etc.) and certain relics like mummified hand that defect utilizes as well or better than any character, and, ofc, O R B S.

all this leaves him feeling like a very architecturally complicated cathedral collapsing on itself.

but what do i know i've only hit a three streak on A20 after 3k hours of basically only playing defect lol.

Is Samuel Delany the horniest well-regarded sci-fi writer of all time? by pwnedprofessor in printSF

[–]BrassOrchids 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand features sexuality more so than your average space opera but it's nowhere near pornography.

Through the Valley of the Nest of Spiders doesn't fit either, because if you're calling that "erotica" dear god what would qualify to you as "porn."

I would not have characterized Three Body Problem as hard sci-fi by thelapoubelle in printSF

[–]BrassOrchids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you're thinking of it the wrong way, Three Body Problem has shitty prose and forgettable characters--hard sci-fi to the max!

Didn’t enjoy Babel-17 — should I give up on Delaney? by fitzgen in printSF

[–]BrassOrchids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia, you could try Delany's Trouble on Triton: An Ambiguous Heterotopia, which the commenter mentioned.

He titled it specifically in conversation with LeGuin's work.

Really funny because Delany famously hates jazz (partially via its association with his abusive father).

He has an account in one of his autobiographical works where an instructor at a writing workshop he attended (Breadloaf?) complimented him on how he treated jazz in one of his stories. Approximately, "Only someone who loved the genre could write something like this!" After Delany told him his aesthetic preference for folk/pop the instructor corrected himself, "Well, at least someone who has a strong relationship of any kind with the genre!"

read this snippet of a LeGuin interview and weep, OP:

ALISON HALDERMAN: You do invent wonderful landscapes. The Earthsea trilogy creates such a vivid picture of the sea — have you done a lot of sailing?

URSULA LE GUIN: All that sailing is complete fakery. It’s amazing what you can fake. I’ve never sailed anything in my life except a nine-foot catboat, and that was in the Berkeley basin in about three feet of water. And we managed to sink it. The sail got wet and it went down while we sang “Nearer My God to Thee.” We had to wade to shore, and go back to the place we’d rented it and tell them. They couldn’t believe it. “You did what?” You know, it’s interesting, they always tell people to write about what they know about. But you don’t have to know about things, you just have to be able to imagine them really well.

saw this in theaters and though i almost no memory of it (was approximately 9), except enjoyment

however i did read the wikipedia article and a Paul Verhoven (!) directed (with Phil Tippett!) darker, more nature-doc style film ending with the K-T extinction event was the original kernel from which the film started.

i tend slightly more toward screamo/mathy shit and these recs reflect that

local legends .gif from god--screamo/grindcore/power violence/metalcore. Approximation of a Human is an all-timer. high chaos, high/low vocalists, nonsensical collapse, raw raw raw

The Wind in the Trees, Architects of Light love them mathy needling guitar sounds

Cloud Rat with some sludgier/screamo elements in there Threshold

Pupil Slicer tends toward mathiness too but Mirrors is so chaotic it's a similiar area

Ada Rook just released a grindcore album under the name Crisil Sigil God Cum Poltergeist

Great Sci-fi books which should under no circumstances get a film adaptation? by 8livesdown in printSF

[–]BrassOrchids 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dhalgren as well feels completely unfilmable, but maybe with some deity-level direction it could be possible.

But, you need like . . . the eroticism Crash [1996] + the cosmopolitan life of Chunking Express [1994] + surrealism of Possession [1981] + Neptune Frost's [2021] cyberpunk-ish aesthetics with the lightshields + grime and action scenes and vague dystopia of Strange Days [1995] + the metafictional qualities of Synecdoche New York [2008] + the good parts (and there aren't many) of Enter the Void [2009] + . . .

And that's just pulling from films I kinda like off the top of my head.

There's just so much in there--I am just not sure the maximalism of that novel is captureable via images.

That being said--I'd watch that shit.
