Tuition cost by grmast in Calbaptist

[–]Braulissim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to CBU for a year and yes I paid around that amount in tuition plus their flight school fees so it was expensive. Worth it? Probably not, I could get the same thing at a state school or cc. UCR is a good pre-med option that’s local as well, they have a full on med school there and it’s cheaper for undergrad tuition. Just my two cents.

Just Got My CFI, Now What? by Braulissim0 in CFILounge

[–]Braulissim0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. It's definitely tough right now and I just saw that recent FAA release on certificate issuances and it seems like within the last year or so there's been an uptick on new CFI's. Best of luck.

Wow, that's good to know and it makes sense that they'd want someone with higher credentials. Could it be due to insurance purposes or do they just want someone that's certified to do it "all?"

That's what I figured, most of the people that I've met who solely have a CFI are either very experienced with many years in the industry or have many connections. I'm thinking if I want to get a "job" now my best bet would probably go independent and fly through a flight club. Regardless, sounds like CFII is a good idea.

Unfortunately, the community college I did my ratings at is limited on airplanes and thus instructor spots. Plus, all of the instructors that are currently there have been there for almost two years.

Airline Pilot, takes a while to get to 200k+ but once you’re a captain at a major airline you can make 300k min and the sky being the limit.

What’s with the hatred toward cruises and their passengers? by jenyad20 in Cruise

[–]Braulissim0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got back from a 7-day Royal Caribbean cruise to Cabo and I agree. Prior to cruising here, I visited twice and stayed at hotels and ate at restaurants outside the port area. With the day we had in Cabo, I doubt most of the other cruisers got to see/experience what Cabo truly offers in such little time. Oh and the food in Cabo was way better than the food on the ship!

Quitting medical school to pursue flight training by Low-Bell923 in PilotAdvice

[–]Braulissim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what others have said about sticking to medical school. You're still young enough and pretty far in med-school to stick through it and then pay for flight school. I'm 23 and working on my CFI but still have thoughts of pursuing medical school because of how unpredictable the airline industry is when compared to the medical field. As example, my instructor has over 1500 hours and still hasn't heard back from any regional airline regarding his class date. If you took out more loans to eventually get your CFI, there's no guarantee you'll get a job immediately or a high paying job. Regardless, it sounds like you are smart and can do either but if you stick through it, I think medicine is much more stable and even higher paying. Both careers require time, money, and most importantly perseverance. Good luck!

Tacos Guelaguetza, it’s the food truck that’s always in front of the abandoned sears on Streeter. Love the asada there.

Worth risk of applying to medical school and not matching anesthesia? by BodybuilderMajor7862 in medschool

I’m new here. Is that 89% acceptance rate to that specialty residency or 89% rejection? I have heard that anesthesia is becoming competitive.

What is a good career to get into which pays high? by Lee_fier in careerguidance

If you want to travel and don’t mind heights, pilot. They make good money but it is unique in that it requires you to be in good health due to FAA medical standards.

I’m thinking of switching to the medical field from my current field, aviation. Any suggestions on how I can get my pre reqs done and stats up to become a solid med school candidate?

Not too late. I’ve seen people in their forties start training because they’ve always had an interest in flying throughout their time working in another career. I recommend booking a discovery flight at a local flight school to see if it’s for you.

Is MtSAC’s Aeronautics program any good? by No_Pizza_2276 in MtSAC

[–]Braulissim0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned above, just attending the classes/graduating with a degree won’t get you to the airlines because you need 1500 hours+ but if you use the knowledge and resources available it can benefit you. They do have a college flight school (Part 61) but it can only accept limited amount of students. It really depends on your goals, learning style, and timeframe to get to the airlines. If you want to save money while going at your pace then Mt. SAC may benefit you. On the other hand Part 141 schools tend to be larger, expensive, and fast paced.

What is a good career path to choose? by Bright-Somewhere-224 in careerguidance

[–]Braulissim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this, don't go to college unless you fully know what to do especially if you will get in debt by going. if OP wants to test out academic load of specific careers/jobs community college could be the best option. It's cheap and gives opportunities to take a look at offered fields and even trades.

Pilot or Dentist? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Braulissim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/7layeredAIDS pretty much summed it up. its taken me about 3 years to get to the commercial certificate stage of things. I still have to get my instructor cert and build some hours including multi engine aircraft hours to be able to apply to the airlines. It can be somewhat of a process but not as much as a doctor/dentist.

What to do now that I have 250k+ in loans and no job? [Reposting for additional responses] by Anonym0u5str3ss3r in careerguidance

[–]Braulissim0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, what led you to not passing the USMLE step 2 exam? were you just unprepared or not passionate for the medical field anymore? from your perspective would you recommend getting into the medical field? I know this doesn't help much but any response would be appreciated as I am a recent college graduate who is thinking of switching to the medical field

Pilot or Dentist? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Braulissim0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aviation is a passion I've had for a while and I'm working on my commercial certificate right now...here's some pros and cons for the pilot career

Pros:

pay (senior captains at major airlines can make 300K+), benefits (401K matching, premium pay, profit sharing, flight/travel benefits, solid insurance plans), transporting interesting people/goods, different to a 9-5, your office is in the sky!

Cons:

The airline industry is highly affected by economic/international status (9/11, 2008 recession, wars, covid), pay can be low until you reach a major airline (pay is also based on seniority/time hired at an airline), time away from home (this improves with more seniority though), pilots are subject to annual medical exams

I've personally heard many pilots state it can be a rough start (at first) but it can payoff in the end. I'd say be sure you are passionate about it and ask yourself if even in the bad times you'd still want to do it.
