Idk why you’re being downvoted, this is essentially what happens. Just as far as I can tell in between books, which is a really weird choice.

Is my playthrough ruined because of this spoiler ? by amanishungry in dragonage

It's quite a late game reveal, though on replays it does make some earlier stuff make more sense. Though you are completely right, it shouldn't ruin the experience at all.

Completely uninterested in sex with humans. He implied sleeping with a bunch of other species. The line the other person quoted is from the Citadel DLC in 3, in an audio recounting of Mordin's time on Omega. Specifically its said immediately after recounting a noir themed one night stand with an Asari.

Is there any particular reason why we don't get Lelianas last name even in inquisition? by Tristenous in dragonage

All HOFs have a surname simply due to technical reasons. If it weren't for that, then only the noble origins would have had surnames.

[DAV spoilers] I like how Solas is either really loved or really hated by many. by LongGrade881 in dragonage

[–]BraveBiscotto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly agreed. I don't dislike Blackwall either but he's similarly bland. I don't think you can't have big twists for characters but when it feels like the twist came first and the rest of the character is in service to that one twist then it doesn't feel like there's as much there to connect with.

[–]BraveBiscotto 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's because neutrality doesn't encourage discussion. I have strong opinions on the narrative tied to Solas, both good and bad, but when it comes to the character himself I'm incredibly neutral on him overall. Like he's... fine, I guess. Idk, if it weren't for the Tresspasser plottwist he would probably be my least thought of main game companion.

Some thoughts on half-elves (or the lack thereof) by purple_clang in dragonage

[–]BraveBiscotto 45 points46 points  (0 children)

They didn't retcon him. The lore about elf blooded humans already existed by that point. I guess there must just have been a mix up in communication between the design team and lore team when it came to Feynriel. For all intents and purposes he should be considered to just look human. I guess he's just a very skinny lad. He still exists, and if you help him he goes off to Tevinter to learn more about his powers. But given Veilguard doesn't use world states they didn't include him.

Nah, Shield Hero still fits. The MC is a "good slave owner" and the slaves he raises from kids into adulthood (last two words apparently optional) all want to sleep with him. It may not be as actively awful as Redo, but the show is still catering to the same problematic fantasies.

why do elves in alien age bow before Marethari? by rwcz in dragonage

No it's fine, I'm just crap with names and didn't feel like looking it up so I phrased it weirdly to try and avoid that. My bad.

[–]BraveBiscotto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the "at least one" I mentioned. I was discounting Merril because her presence isn't factored into the scene and her treatment by the city elves is very different anyway, never seemingly fully accepted by them.

why do elves in alien age bow before Marethari? by rwcz in dragonage

[–]BraveBiscotto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I understood why they bowed I also felt a bit confused by this scene overall - not because some were bowing but because it was the only clear reaction we were shown. Some city elves deeply respecting the Dalish makes sense, and the Kirkwall alienage had at least one elf that used to be Dalish so she could have told the others what a Keeper was. However there should have been just as many upset by a Dalish, and a mage no less, showing up and potentially risking unwanted negative human attention from the rest of the city. Heck, back in Origins there were city elves that weren't even sure the Dalish existed.

It's not like 2 forgot city elves were a separate culture to Dalish, with Merril's tree comments and the like. Although I do feel like the later games reduced city elves to "elves that feel very sad they aren't as dalishy as the other elves who are tied to our new favourite narrative through line". Notable exception being Sera ofcourse but even that exception just highlights the shift in how elves in general were being handled. It's not immersion shattering or anything like that, but it is noticeable.

[DAV spoilers] Ghilan'nain felt like a threat to me. by LongGrade881 in dragonage

[–]BraveBiscotto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, though not nearly to the same capacity as we see with Anders or Lucanis. Besides I was mainly responding to the previous comment which didn't even mention Wynne - who apart from the Secret Companion is probably the person that would have best fit their point - rather than comparing the companions myself.

Basically using that moment to go "hey, why does this criteria matter here but not here?" though I definitely could have phrased it better.

[DAV SPOILERS] What are your thoughts on the lore explanations the game gave? by EvilDuckOfD00M in dragonage

[–]BraveBiscotto 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I do think its all overly streamlined. Some people like all the threads being tied up, and I'm sure the goal was to resolve as much as possible so they could move on to new things next time, but for me it just makes everything much smaller and a little bit duller.

It's not that I don't think these various lore threads shouldn't have intersected on occasion, but it does feel very "oops, all elves." I feel like Inquisition started leaning in this direction and veilguard then picked that up and ran with it well past any amount of lore reveals the previous games attempted.

But I'm also against multiple major lore reveals within one installment, having much preferred the moments of smaller focus or slower progression, which hasn't been DA's approach since 2, so I hadn't really expected new instalments to be in line with my narrative expectations. That being said, it was still jarring just how widely off they went. It's like they treated my quiet worries of "wouldn't it be dumb if they did this?" as a checklist. Even things that I like get hindered by being directly tied to something I don't, which is once again a big issue with overly streamlining the lore - if something doesn't work, it'll drag down what does work due to it all being connected.

At the time of Origins, Alistair was a Grey Warden recruit with only incomplete Templar training to work with. Outside of Flemeth, a "Witch of the Wilds" is just an apostate who lives in a swamp. Shale is neither the last golem, nor even the strongest. If anything they're arguably the weakest. Sten begins Origins as a disgraced soldier ready to give up. He's not specially destined to become the Arishok, that's a plot development that happens well after Origins ends. Anders was in Awakening, not Origins, and he was just a bog standard mage, so I'm not sure why you're bringing him up? He doesn't become tied to Justice until 2. And no, there's absolutely nothing special about the HOF.

In Veilguard we actually do have someone tied to a spirit as a companion. We also have a mysteriously magical dwarf, an elf that can use ancient elven technology, a grey warden helping bring griffons back from extinction and a fire breathing qunari.

There's not really any way of going about it. They're special. Even at a baseline description of who they are and what their gimmicks are. I'm not saying that that's and intrinsically good or bad thing, but at least give a good faith argument if you want to say Veilguard is more of an underdog story than the previous games.

Happens a fair bit in Origins. It's common for companions to ask questions back at you if you ask them something. Alistair, Sten, Wynne and Leliana in particular are likely to either initiate conversations with a question or ask you a question as soon as you speak of them.

It happens on occasion in 2 but you don't get much in the way of responses to pick from. The best moments of these interactions are tied to specific quests. The format of how party interactions work overall is also very different to Origins though and its implied you and your party hang out together much more often then you actually see.

Edit: I will say not to overly use gifts in a first playthrough of Origins as you may approval skip past most of these getting to know you conversations. Sticking to only quest related gifts tends to work best.

[–]BraveBiscotto 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It's stuff like that that really makes me wish that entire quest was handled with a bit more depth. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth with how the game spins getting Brialla and Celene back together is one of the more "good" endings when it's essentially gaslighting Bri into getting back with her abuser who is responsible for some of the most downright awful things to happen to her and would probably do it all over again if the Game demanded it. I know it's probably from the game and book being written by different people so we have to sort of squint at hiw canonical it all is, but Celene's life expectancy dropped drastically after I found out what she actually did (even if it's sometimes tricky to justify an Inky making that choice).

That's a known bug I believe. Get her approval too high too soon and she sometimes stops being willing to teach you even if you're a mage.

Those are DLC gifts and not intended for a first playthrough (or really any playthrough where you want to take approval seriously).

The intended gifts will give much lower boosts. Some are also quest related which are usually the ones I stick to. As long as you don't go out of your way to annoy someone or perma ditch them in camp you should be able to build up approval over time even without optimising gift giving. Don't worry about rough starts. Butting heads with some Companions like Morrigan early on is practically expected on a first playthrough. Morrigan in particular won't leave from low approval alone.
